Rumors and Half Truths!

Words can not explain what is happening here.

No really - I have nothing. hmmmmmmm hmmmmmmm

Well - nothing earth shattering - I'll have to let the coffee kick in . .. or this cookie which seems to be 95% sugar. mmmmmmm Breakfast cookies!

Some non related bits and pieces of information.

I was in town taking some more photos when Diane points and said - "HEY there is Nancy". Of course the first thing that pops into my brain is Nancy Reagan (as I'm sure happens to everybody) but she is actually pointing at a woman with a smile from ear to ear who also happens to be the Mayor of Columbus, Nancy Osterhaus (I'm relieved it was not Nancy Reagan as I have nothing I want to say to her).

I walk up and introduced myself (having only talked to her through emails) and we chit chat for a little while. I would have loved to talk to her more deeply but someone else already had her ear so I figured I would be cool and not interrupt . . . . TOO much.

She did tell me that everything I had printed so far was truthful and I was doing a fine job. I also found out that Columbus is now officially in the movie industry radar. I WISH I would have taken a photo of her - her grin like that is adorable!
---------------------------
I spent a major portion of 10 minutes writing an article for a Madison Newspaper/online web thingy about the upcoming events and the article stole a lot of blog material so you guys got screwed.

HOWEVER - they did cut out a sentence that I can now repeat - it will be out of context but here it is.

"I'll try not to trip over your body. Did you put that as a special talent on your application?"

HA - too funny, I make myself laugh. Too bad they cut that out.

So if you are interested it the REST of the story check out The Isthmus Daily Page tonight!
------------------------
Since I saw this SECRET posted on a newspapers site I guess I can mention it here (so much for keeping secrets). They will be filming Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday AND perhaps into Thursday. Seems they keep finding great locations. I can't say where . . . as I do not know.

The Wednesday part has me a little mystified because according to secret sources filming will be in Darlington on Wednesday also. On that subject, extras are given three pages of rules to follow, no asking for autographs, no photos and so forth and no fawning.
--------------
For any of you thinking about making the trek to Columbus Monday! I would seriously think twice about it. Sure, you can see a movie being made but what will you actually see. There is one rumor floating around that we could expect 10,000 people on Monday. I'm not sure that number is valid but I would not be surprised at 3-4000 which is the size of the entire town.

Remember - in reality the filming will be amazingly boring with hours of nothing to do between takes. Do you want to stand for two hours in 36 degrees and spitting rain in row twelve in a crowd which is two blocks from the action anyway?  (Ha - people stood for 16 hours in spitting rain).

Just think about it before you come. Personally I think of you want to get a feel, come on down Sunday. It's suppose to be a nice day and the "set" will be pretty near complete.
--------
I received an email from Marcia Sparks about the Columbus print. She will have prints "without" the banner, I guess she replaced it with he word SAMPLE! Now we must talk her into MORE scenes of the downtown area.

In other news - they are putting down a faux cobblestone street last night. Not sure how much of the four streets will have it but it's a pretty big undertaking.

If you would like the true experience of driving on cobblestone streets drive West James Street, although I have heard it's a little rougher then cobblestone.

The crowds have gotten larger every day this week and security is now on the scene.

OH - before I forget - Squash this rumor - NO MEET AND GREET AT THE HIGH SCHOOL!

Also - the Kurth Brewery (I have a Kurth sweatshirt) is open Wednesdays and Fridays and Diane and I WILL be seen there at some point WITH CAMERA! It's a pretty cool looking square building - I'll need to get a photo.
-------
I am actually thinking of a project for perhaps a book of photos of Columbus brick buildings. Need to find some history of the buildings!

I have heard the rumor from a number of places now that when Universal leaves it will not be forever and should be back once the weather gets more humane. Awnings should be kept in place.

There is nothing more I can say at the moment - I'm waiting for the newspapers to spill all the secrets so I can. They always get the jump on secret spilling.

Talk at ya tomorrow

Cub reporter Rod Melotte disguised as Jimmy Olsen (also Giant Turtle Boy at times).

Final thought - another record yesterday in hits.

went over 10,000 hits this morning!

For all of you Christian Bale fans

  1. I figured the meet and greet rumor was false. It may be boring but how often does a town like this get a chance to see this type of thing? If you are in the area, it's worth checking out... boring or not.

With the weather on Monday though, perhaps Tues., Weds. and Thurs. would be better days to go.

  2. That asian website has a pretty cool video from the History channel about Dillinger.

  5. I appreciate all of your work on this blog. And yes, Michael Mann can't hide from you LOL

BTW I have a request, I'd be glad if you hear me. Some of Michael Mann fans are arguing on what kind of camera does he use in Public Enemies. Some say film and others say digital(Viper Filmstream). So I'd be happy if you can take a photo on shooting device. Movie geeks may confirm if it's film or digital.

BTW please don't mind my bad English, for I live in... South Korea! Yes, even South Korean Michael Mann fanboy visits this blog. I just wanted you to know that.

  6. team56th - There are MANY times you English would be considered far superior then mine.

I'll see what I can do!

  7. Thanks for the update yet again.

Even though I realize the day might be cruddy and there will be a lot of people, I think that it will just be fun to feel the energy. Plus, it is events like this where you get a chance to meet and chat with other interesting people. I'm kind of a geek like that :)

Shout out to South Korea!! That is so awesome.

I'm going to do some wandering around on Sunday. Any suggestions on where to grab a bite? I want to support the local businesses in this venture so any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

    TGIF everyone!

    Rachel :)

  8. Whew! Now I won't have to worry about the suspicious disappearance of Grinder allegedly arranged by Bale fans... LOL!

My breakfast cookie is oatmeal cranberry walnut. Lots of healthy stuff in with the sugar and butter. Yum! Goes great with coffee.

Thanks for the Bale pics. I am very curious to see what kind of make up jobs the actors will undergo to transform themselves into the gangsters of the 30s.

Looking forward to reading your latest on the Isthmus page!

  9. I have to put in my two cents on where to get a bite to eat. I live in Columbus, and I love to eat, so I feel like an expert on this topic:

Julie's Java has awesome coffee, latte, sandwiches, scones, cookies, EVERYTHING! She's not open late, that I'm aware of, anyway. So, for evening dining I love the James Street Dining Company, 1/2 block away from the downtown intersection where much of the action will take place. A little outside of town, is a place called the West Side Inn. From the outside it does not look like anything you would want to eat at. NOT AT ALL FANCY, but on the inside it is clean, spacious, and the food is wonderful! Of course, if you love a great hamburger, Hard Head's (another place 1 block away from the four corners) has great stuff, including my fave, free popcorn. There are several pizza joints, and even Chinese, as well. Enjoy our little town - I wasn't born here, but found this place by accident and moved here 11 years ago. I adore this place!

Oh yeah - how do I change my user identity to protect myself? I don't want to be responsible for any more late blogs, and it doesn't help that you RATTED ON ME Rod!!~

  10. Oh wait Grinder, did you take those Bale photographs by yourself, and is that what he's gonna look in PE?

  11. The Apple Tree is a nice place also on S Luddington leading into town (Business 151).

Most fats food places (McDonalds, Burger King, Culvers) are nest to the highway - can't miss.

We ate at the TINY Chinese place last night - I swear they are all the same with the same exact food and menu's - good stuff though.

Hard Heads has great burgers?? I'll have to check it out.

  12. Thank you so much Kathy!! I really appreciate the great reviews. I will check them out. I should be able to get at least two meals in while visiting Columbus. Growing up in a small town, I know that the local, non-chain restaurants are treasures.

I especially appreciate the coffee tip as I LOVE and LIVE for coffee.

  13. The James Street Dining Company is closed darn it!! The movie folks turned it into....a restaurant! LOL Its a great place to eat but as of yesterday its not open. Another good place is Day One Pizza. Another vote for Julie's Java!!

  14. No bathrooms!? No problem! Grinder didnt you say you were going to let us all into your home to use the potty, warm up & eat!??
    You really do rock!!

  15. Help - since people here might know... What happened to the Italian Connection on James St.? I picked up food there on Feb. 14 and everything seemed normal. Called them to order again two weeks later and no answer... went by the next day and all signage was gone. Are they coming back?
Sorry if this is answered somewhere on the blog. I just tuned in today.

  16. Probably just shut down for the duration of the filming.

  17. The article is up - check out the link in the blog or go here.

Link is to long for a comment.

  18. Cool article in the Isthmus Rod. Liking the "picture frame with his fingers thing" reference!

  19. The Italian Connection is now a faux bakery for the shoot. I'm not sure if they're coming back or not. Hopefully they will though because I have a $50 gift certificate for them and I wouldn't want it to be wasted.

Where is the West Side Inn? I've never heard of it.

  20. BTW - feel free to click on the recommend button. Every time you do a cookie falls in my lap and I get happy!

  21. Great article in the paper Grinder.

    What "recommend" button? LOL

  22. West Side Inn is the Old Club 60 out on Hwy 60 (of course). It's about 8-10 miles from Columbus.

  23. Thanks so much for your blog! Very very much appreciated! I am a college student at UW-Oshkosh (yaay we're apart of this amazing project too!) so I can't come to the Mon, Tues, Wed, or Thurs shoots in Columbus, but I will be there this Saturday (3/15) after noon sometime, just to check out the city with a friend. So if anyone sees a male and female around the college age just walking around (most likely looking lost) with a camera, it could quite possibly be me :)
Thanks Kathy for posting some dining options!

  24. "our man in columbus" -- :)

It's amazing where blogging can take you these days, innit? Great piece, hope you are well compensated for your words & wit. :)

Funny, just about everyone talking about this refers to the 'trek' to Columbus. It's really not that far off the beaten path, and is a hub of Amtrak activities. I wonder if Mister Mann learned about Columbus (the city) in his days as a UW student? :)

    Onward!

  25. Just came across the blog, great photos! I live a couple blocks from downtown and took a bunch yesterday, I set up a shutterfly album here. http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AcOWrFo0Ys2LD8g&emid=sharshar&linkid=link4

  26. Rob, great article! Keep up the great work. It is nice to hear the perspective of someone that is living in all the hussle and bussle.

Michelle - thanks for sharing the photos. I'm heading over Sunday so I will definately share with all of you when I get back.

    Have a great weekend all!

  27. Hey Grinder are you going to provide a pitstop at the weather station for all the hungry masses next week? At least you Columbusians will be able to earn some extra dough providing food and shelter. Why do I get the impression you are like Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window peering over main street with a pair of binoculars, or up in the crows nest at the weather station with a telescope?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've just found out that the James Steet Dining Company has closed...for good! That is bad news.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That sucks, I heard they were really good, although a little expensive, I didn't even get to try it :P

    ReplyDelete
  30. We were the after remodeling and talked to the owners and they were happy.

Then they were featured in Madison Magazine and a few days later POOF!

  31. Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window

LOL - You made me laugh!!

  32. Yes, JSDC closed a few weeks ago. I had informally helped with marketing details for a while, and the owners are lovely people. I really wish things would have worked out, it was a great place.

Thanks Rachel. I decided to create a set on Flickr for the shots I'm taking because it updates automatically, whereas the shutterfly doesn't. That link is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pbhgirl/sets/72157604120985085/

  33. Thanks again Michelle. I will make sure to provide a link if I am able to get any shots. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but not holding my breath.

I look at this way.... it is at least a day off work if nothing else and a nice day trip before gas hits 4 bucks a gallon. :)
