And Then They Rested

Seems the crew has a little down time for a week and luckily for them they are still up north in Summer Winterland. I bet those guys are just loving Wisconsin weather right now.

They are holed up in Minocqua which is about the size of Columbus. Minocqua means ""fair maiden". In Native American.

Minocqua is also said to be derived from the Ojibwe word Ninocqua, meaning noon day rest.

In 1891 the town consisted of 29 saloons, two hotels, two general stores, a small market and about 15 homes.
(15 homes and 29 saloons - awesome home to saloon ratio). In 1912, a fire destroyed most of the buildings along Front Street. The fire started across from where the post office sits today. Locals tried to stop the fire with dynamite.

BRUNO BRUNO!! (ok - that does not fit . . . read on)

The town might also be named after a tribal chief named Noc Wib or Minocquip.

Another explanation for the name may refer to the fact that the town is an island surrounded by several lakes (aqua).

So - back on topic - I wonder what they are doing. Surfing the Internet? If so perhaps they have run across this blog. Hi guys. I am completely in awe of your skills at putting this all in motion.

I can see it now, they have a week off but Michael Mann still wants them to wake up at 5:00 and eat breakfast outside. (it's like 29 outside now)

Bob Wagner is probably spending his time playing six tables of online poker at once and calling for Bruno to take care of something.

Howard spends the day in the middle of an intersection in Minocqua looking very thoughtful and making sure everybody is parking their cars in the right place in town.

The perpetual motion girls who walk around with clip boards are spending all day on tread mills while pointing at random objects and making sure everything is placed exactly right.

Vinnie has dirtied half the parking lot with his dust and water and was last seen on the second floor covering up some squibs that Bruno installed for practice.

Keven the Picture Car dude . . . . . well . . . . he has now discovered every bar in Minocqua and has not slept for three days and his back is killing him. Someone asked him where he was and he replied "I don't know and I can't tell you, it's a secret".

I have a request for anyone up there with any influence. I was on the set in Oshkosh and circled the set in Columbus. I have the #1 Public Enemies site/community with 1700 readers a day and all I want to do is be allowed on the set with a real camera so I can take photos of the crew.

I don't care about the actors. The crew are the real stars (besides the cars). No one ever takes their photos and gives them any recognition. I want to take shots of the people that are making this spring something to talk about for a long time.

For instance - the sound guy with the straw hat. Awesome photos in my minds eye. The perpetual motion girls that just tire me out watching them. The other sound guy with the glasses. So many wonderful shots of the behind the scenes players. So many stories.

On another side note - If you have not had a chance to see Carrier on PBS - it's a 12 hour documentary on the behind the scenes people on the USS Nimitz. GREAT show. They call it a floating high school as most of the sailors are 18-20. And they are the tip of the spear?
------------------------
So - as you have surmised SOMEBODY is sick with the flu or something. I read one rumor abut seeing Johnny Depp in a Walgreens buying cold medication. Yea - I can see THAT happening.
-------------------------
One of the things Public Enemies is doing that newspapers are not talking about is how the movie is bringing people together and making friends.

For instance - shakenbsis has become a good friend and we're trying to talk her into opening the James Street Granola Bar. She makes the best granola.

I'm going to write an article for the Isthmus about how Universal has changed a lot of little unsung things in our lives. If any of you have any stories on something that has changed for the better (or worse) let me know.

I feel the Columbus Auditorium has been helped . Without the movie it would still be in first gear (I think) and moving forward but perhaps not with a full tank of gas. The movie has brought people together from all over the Nation to help her out.

Today I'm sending a check to the CAC for $258.22 from sixteen donations I received. Thanks everyone, it is really appreciated and more is always needed.

If you will notice I have a new link to a new photo page of the Auditorium on the upper left side. There will be an official site coming up soon(ish).

The audi thanks you and keep the donations coming. It really is showing support. Michael Mann would be proud of you for helping keep history repaired. Places like her and the other buildings in Columbus are why Universal came to Wisconsin.

I'm surprised at how many people in Columbus have told me "I didn't even know we had an Auditorium".

Here is another photo from the JP collection. Gotta love fish eye lenses.

They cost so FREAKISHLY much for Nikon's.

------------------------------
On a personal note. We went to my moms house for her 80th birthday and on the way we had to make a detour because of a road closed in Waterloo.

On the way back there was another detour and we thought it would be 18 miles out of our way. So we felt we had a better way.

Half an hour later and completely lost we were rethinking our strategy and knowing that perhaps Amazing Race was not our best choice for reality shows.

But - there are always things to take pictures of.

Zoomed around a corner and saw this for a few seconds. Stopped, backed up and got out of the car for this.

That's it for today.

  1. Hope you get pics of the crew Rod. Just rescheduled my "Columbus vacation" ;)

Keep the info, pics and goodies coming THANKS

  2. *wondering if the cast and crew have discovered The Baker's House in Minocqua*

if so, that's the real reason they aren't willing to leave the area.

  3. Rachel - AHHH yes - I remember now. Yea - the self publishing book format and the word are a tough thing to put together. Plus at that time (and now) no real access.

The how it works angle has always been a fascination since I was a kid. I remember taking photos of a crew laying train track when I was 12.

Each person has his job and I loved watching.

  4. Well, Rod, I was just thinking about that the other day, wondering if the actual PE people know how many friends we've all made thanks to the film. I don't post much, but I've been here since day1. I think I've told you before where I'm from (that's Macedonia) and since filming started I've gotten to know you (Rod), Michelle, Osh, Wlkingbluepirate, all your other readers, I've chatted to Bryan Burrough (sort of, on the JDZ book club), apparently spoken to some people in the film on imdb, learned about Nancy Osterhouse, the Posers, Julie, CP, and about half the population of Columbus, the New Moon cafe in Oshkosh, the jail in Crown Point and the architecture of Aurora. Plus, I've learned as much about American geography and as much about the process of filming as I've ever known. There. If I ever do come to the midwest, I'll know as much as the locals.

  5. love your road trip pic!! what an amazing photo!!

I know I don't need to tell you this, but it is so great that you give us (the ones outside of WI) an idea of where the places are in WI and a history lesson. I love the map and the little red dot to show us where Little Bo is.

Glad to hear the audi is making $. I believe what you've rec'd so far is only the beginning of what is to come!! When the dream comes true (and it will)and the audi is restored that will be a great accomplishment for you and your town!!

As for JD being sick, well, I can't imagine him walking into Walgreens and buying cold med, I would think someone else would do that for him if he were sick ~ that's just my opinion.

Hope you had a nice time with your mom yesterday.

  6. rumors fly for sure! Here in waupaca there were rumors he came to eat at the wheelhouse in waupaca while in appleton. Not true but someone believed it!

  7. yes- it is a great idea. A little hard to actually do it though unless I had full access and no real job! LOL

    On another note.

Nancy O has a new Columbus blog - trying to steal my thunder Nancy??

  8. I don't think it is that hard to believe that he would go to Walgrens and buy cold medicine. He is VERY down to earth and likes to do things for himself. I am also sure he likes to get out and do a few non-work related things every now and again. Although it may be hard to believe, famous people cook, clean, mow the lawn, and shop for cold medicine. They don't have to do it but they do. I however am not doing ANY of those things ever again if I ever become famous. Wish me luck world.

    ReplyDelete
  9. OH - I'm not saying he would not do it. I'm saying would he be allowed to do it.

Plus - the town he was suppose to do it has no Walgreens.

  10. I read your blog everyday. Thanks for all the info.
I was so ready to call in to work for the next few days but downtown just didn't look ready for "action" this week.

Love all your pictures. Keep up the good work. Maybe I will see you roaming the streets when filming starts again. I would love to meet you!

  11. Rod, I smile every day when I read your blog. And I am smiling at your picture when you got lost. NO WAY, right?

  12. I'm still a little confused about this next round of filming being a "summer scene." (To quote from the Mayor's blog.) The trees next week will look much as they are now, with leetle eety beety buds, thus identifying the season in this dramatically temperate growing zone as "early May." June made more sense, if they wanted to differentiate scenes from what they've filmed in March. I mean, at least the grass is now green... er, well, not at this exact moment...

Not even the Redbuds will be aflower! Or will they?

Anyway. I have no clue, just idly wondering.

  13. Awwww.. You guys are so sweet! Yes, that has been the best part of all this for me, meeting great new friends and LAUGHTER! = )

I like how you mention all the behind the scenes folks Rod. Be careful though, some of them (us) are allergic to having their photo's taken. I remember our biggest fear in my behind the scenes production days was being "seen"! LOL

    you guys are the best...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Rod,
Like the new look. After working on the set for 6 days I do not know how they do it. It took me three days to recover the first time, and I am just getting back to normal after a week from the last 5 days. To work 14 hours a day and then look for supper then to bed (not yours) and back up at 5:00 am. I think something is pushing Mann to get the filming done but the crew must be burnt out by now. Every good coach knows when to call time-out.

  15. As for the crew don't forget Trevor the Production Assistant in charge of extras, Barry from wardrobe, Eric Lasko the Asst Director, Harry Lou the weapons expert and the hundreds of others that make things go so smoothly!

  17. PE Movie impact... A bigger awareness of our community and what historical treasures exist. (communities if you include the other filming locations).

In my opinion, the Blog impact is HUGE!!! Without your blog as a gathering point, I doubt I would have met shankenbsis, you, Diane, Michelle, known that the Kurth was such a friendly place.

The ideas, donations, letters and support for the Auditorium have also come at a critical time for the Auditorium Corporation. They're working with the City for the roof repair work. Seeing the support for the Auditorium (far and near) helps. It also re-energizes that group of people putting in countless hours in meetings and planning the restoration.

  19. According to someone on IMDB, they are filming in Manitowish Waters until Tuesday. The author has a picture of JD from yesterday, she said Jerry claims they are shooting until Sunday, and she has a friend who is involved in the movie who also claims they are filming until Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yep, I saw something on IMBD board too (maybe a crew member?) Maybe they haven't gotten all the scenes they need @ Little Bo? maybe repairs from the fire too? Much speculation about a possible actors strike that would make taking advantage of all time possible for filming a priority??
    just guessing

I never undertood "before PE" and this blog how people spend so much time on line, chatting, etc........

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't understand : is the shooting stopped for the week ?

    ReplyDelete
  22. The filming schedule is VERY confusing. Some people are saying the filming is being postponed for a number of days, while there are other reports that today is a laundry day and things will start up again on tomorrow (Tuesday). Also, some people say the filming at Little Bohemia is over, but other people are saying they could be filming there again on Tuesday. How do you know who to believe?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I meant to say it has been claimed they are shooting until Tuesday, not Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Two reports: one good and one bad (potentially very bad) for Public Enemies.

First the good news. Here is a neat news article with pictures (from Johnny Depp Reads) about Marion Cotillard visiting a Wisconsin reservation (Billie Frechette was a mixed French-Indian, but was born and spent much of her life on Menominee reservations.

    http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080427/GPG0101/804270707/1978/GPGlife

And now for the bad news. Here is a report from Hollywood (found by a blogger at IMDb) concerning the actors/film industry negotiations. An actors strike could happen on July 1. (Note the coincident date with the opening of Public Enemies in 2009.) Apparently the situation doesn’t look good, which could be very bad for the filming of Public Enemies:(

    http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/exclusive-news-about-sag-amptp-talks/

    ReplyDelete
  25. garyandyvonne - I have bee watching the strike thing and I just figure it is going to happen.

However - filming for the movie should be done before July 1 and I have to think that is why this process is being rushed along.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Summer Scenes? I believe somebody else also has asked this, but how can they do summer scenes in Wisconsin during the beginning of May. I am sure Wisconsin is great place to be in early May, but it certain can't pass for summer. Or can it?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Who cares about the actors strike? I'm more worried about the bloggers strike!

I'm sure it must be frustrating for people who want to plan for watching some of the filming. Hope they figure it out and let us know so people don't miss out. It was a really fun experience when they filmed in Oshkosh. I would hate for someone who really wanted to watch...or perhaps even meet Johnny Depp...to miss out on this.

  32. Rod, it has been snowing here off and on all morning. We drive my son to school about 15 miles out in the country...lots of snow! I was reminded of my wedding day, May 6, 2005...woke up to rain, hail the size of golf balls trying to get to the church, tornado sirens going off during our vows and then a finale of scattered snow flurries...all within 2 hours time. Only in Wisconsin!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Three inches of snow when I went to work this morning at 5am, I had to slow down twice to figure out if I was still on the road, all part of spring in Wisconsin.

  36. Yesterday I saw that filming had been postponned on one of the news websites. I immediately came to the blog to see if you had confirmed it and what was being said. An impact of P.E.... seeing what a blog and other posts say before you confirm or deny a news report :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Today you said "I have the #1 Public Enemies site/community with 1700 readers a day and all I want to do is be allowed on the set with a real camera so I can take photos of the crew."

I don't mean any offense, I know the past couple of months your blog has been about PE, but there are some long time Depp communities that are all focused on PE right now too. Their numbers are 5 and 10 times what yours are so I don't know how yours is #1 when places like Oh Johnny, Johnny Depp Zone, Johnny Depp Reads and Depp Impact have been around a long time, have more readers and get more hits. They aren't asking for special favors. So, with all due respect, shouldn't they be "allowed on the set with real cameras" before you? Why is your community #1?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why is your community #1? you ask.

Because it is about Public Enemies and not Johnny Depp.

Would the Johnny Depp sites (which I respect completely and have a good relationship with . . . up to now) be talking about Public Enemies if Johnny was not in the movie?

    Let me ask you this.

If someone from a Depp Site which you KNOW are there to talk about and discuss Johnny Depp asked Universal if they could go on set with a camera. Do you think you could trust them to NOT take photos of Johnny Depp if he was 5 feet away?

What I said was (and I believe it is true at the moment) is that this site is the number 1 site for Public Enemies, NOT the largest site on the net talking about Public Enemies.

geez - people are touchy today.

    is it me?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ya know Rod, I have noticed people are very touchy the last several days. If people are having a problem with what is being said without taking it in stride, then why continue to come to the site.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well said! Anonymous 5:36--with all due respect I don't think he said that nobody else should be allowed to take pictures...so I'm confused by your post???? Rod's blog is about the MOVIE not Johnny Depp.

Its a free country-if the Johnny Depp people "want to be allowed on the set with real cameras" also then..why...don't they just ask?? LOL Nobody is preventing them doing anything!!

Anyway! Love the blog Rod its #1 in my book--keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ya know rod, yeah it is you.

Your ego has gotten too big and you need to be brought down a notch.

Take a step back and look at how you and your attitude has changed.

I used to like coming to your blog. Not so much anymore.

You are NOT the #1 PE site.

You do not deserve to be on set to take pictures.

    You are owed NOTHING.

    ReplyDelete
  42. OK - I'll bite - what IS the #1 PE site.

And then I'll delete this thread - once I find out.

it's not IMdb as they are a total movie site talks about ALL movies, not focused on one single movie and it is full of people that sound like you.

This is an adult site where adults talk to other adults.

it's all good - my feelings are not hurt and I continue to smile and I don't have gas.

  45. It's pretty interesting from a sociological standpoint to watch how the online process/comment boards following various threads of this movie have evolved. When filming is somewhere that many people have access and there are lots of similar reports seemingly verifying things, everywhere is a happy place. Now, that filming has moved to a closed set with a (relatively) distant location and small crowds, people are so eager to listen to any tidbit of fact, rumor or otherwise and sources become scarce, everything (here, imdb, elsewhere) gets kind of ugly. Hopefully prospects will turn up when the crew returns back to a more well-attended locale...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Boy, people are very testy lately. Why can't people be more civil to each other? Over at IMDb there has been a large number of nasty exchanges and even some very cruel things said about some of the cast of the film. Why is being mean-spirited now seen to be cool? I just don't get it.

Just look at the covers of those magazines and you see grainy photos of restricted places taken from 100s of yards away with giant lenses. Little Bohemia and its limited access coverage is our state's version the National Enquirer.

Then, look at newsier magazines -- They have nice clear photos of verifiable events. That is our Oshkosh, Columbus and hopefully Beaver Dam and Milwaukee.

I have a pretty decent relationship with many Depp websites and forums, and I think if any of us owners had the chance to be on set and were asked not to take pics, I'd like to think that we'd respect the wishes/rules of the people in charge.

  64. Rod--I am in full agreement with the majority of cool people on this site: YOU ROCK!!!

Thanks to everyone who sent me pictures of the police car in Columbus. I even have one that shows my hubby in the back seat!

Speaking of conflicts. . .I've been thinking about when I have exams in school (yes I am a student again) and when they might be filming again. I wouldn't mind if they delayed for a few weeks--I'll be on summer break then!!! I have actually thought about skipping classes--what is wrong with me? :-) It has become an obsession for many of us. Hee Hee! I would love for my 6 year old to meet "the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Guy" AKA Johnny Deb (can't get her to say Depp). She has now watched Finding Neverland at least 5 times in the last few weeks. She is only 6, but she has a great British accent from watching these movies.

Let's just blow-off and ignore the negative people. Turn the other cheek?! They aren't worth our time.

Thanks again Rod for the AWESOME, FABULOUS, INCREDIBLE, EXCITING, FANTASTIC, TERRIFIC, etc., etc. site!

I have so much fun reading the blog.

  65. well wth????? must be monday....?
this is a site that started out for those curious about the filming of Public Enemies in the small town of Columbus, Wisconsin.
Rod was kind enough to let us in on all the fun and events involving the filming.People all over Wisconsin (and the world;] )have come to contribute their memories and pictures of their experience with this wonderful opportunity that has come to our beautiful state.
For those of who check in everyday it is to us the #1 Public Enemies site.. this is not a Johnny Depp site it is a Public Enemies movie making website and shame on you for "dissing" Rod and all his hard work....
Rod thank you for giving us all the
info and hard work you have put into this site-- this is one person who truly appreciates it!!!!! :)

  66. deppfanatics11 - It is an orange cat that is in Rod's last pic.

I also find it interesting that all the people talking smack on here hide behind an anonymous alias.
No one is making you come to this blog. If you don't like it, then don't read it. It's easy as that! :)

  67. To Karen at Johnny Depp Reads

Perhaps I should clarify. I was not saying that YOU could not control yourself - I was looking at it from their eyes only.

    Man - I can't wait until tomorrow!

I will post this tomorrow but I feel I MUST say something tonight about the Auditorium.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is a HUGE day for the Audi - she NEEDS your support.

There is going to be a vote - bottom line - we need bodies at th City Council meeting tomorrow.

the letters (6) helped but exit polls are telling us they need more convincing.

I will be there handing out cigarettes and chocolate . . JUST KIDDING!!

the meeting is at 6:30 tomorrow - more . . .tomorrow

The outside of the auditorium is City Hall. It encompasses the 2nd and 3rd floors and has been sitting unused for over 70 years!!!!!!!

  80. Been un-emailable for a few days, and am still out of state. I so wish I could come to the meeting tomorrow, it's SO important for us to unite and show our support. I would be there if I could, and am praying the photos I took will stand as witness to my dedication to this space. PLEASE go if you can, my heart will be there with all of you and I will be glued to the computer tomorrow night for any news.

  81. Lynn- It isn't my pic. I just googled and found it.

  82. Love the grassy pic!

This blog is my first and only. It has changed my life forever because if I hadn't found it and read it every day I don't think I would have made the trek to Oshkosh. And if I had not gone to Oshkosh I would not have met JD and I would not have seen PE being filmed or known what a wonderful place WI is and how spendid it's people are.(the ones I met)
SO...I hope the blog never ends. It will be my eyes and ears to Rod's world-Public Enemies and who knows what else! db

  83. Why do we sign in anonymous? Because we don't want Rod's minions coming after us because we aren't hanging on Rod's every word and in complete agreement with everything.

You guys need to remember, this is a small town guy writing a blog. He is also trying to get his town's auditorium fixed up, which is commendable. BUT, he is not your leader. The ideas and stories... a lot of them come from people that have posted on here or talked to him without recognition. It is a supposed group effort. So, he isn't all powerful and all knowing people. He is just a guy who started a blog and now thinks that the PE world owes him because he writes about it. Not so.

While you have done a lot of good, recently the tone of your writing has changed. It is more ego driven than anything. And that's sad. I think that is what is bringing out the agressiveness and hostility in people.

So, don't bother telling me to leave if I don't like it or all the other things you throw at people that dare to question things on here... I am leaving. Thank you all for what started out as an enjoyable experience with great conversation and ended almost like every other board out there.... making me question people.

Maybe it's NOT everyone else on all of these boards; maybe it's YOU?!!
Rod, your blog may not please everyone every day, but it pleases enough people who come to it day after day after day that I am sure it is one of the best if not THE best one on THE MOVIE!! There may be others that are bigger, but that doesn't necessarily make them better.
I sent an email about the auditorium; hope it helps a little bit!!! I'll be praying that those in power will see the value of preserving this gem!!

  85. I like your grassy picture. It reminds me of the program the Teletubies my kids used to watch. I enjoy reading your blog. Thanks!

  86. I think its so interesting that people have to create "drama" just because they are no longer going to read a BLOG. And WHO is talking about egos?? please. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  87. There is enough bitterness in the world...can we just get back to enjoying the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Forget about the drama Rod, please tell about the picture. I was thinking it was a joke.
