Oshkosh - On Your Mark!

I have a small off topic editorial comment at the end today.
--------------------------------
I can just feel the excitement in the air. I know how it was days before the events in Columbus and even though I am in a different location . . . I can feel it.

Today is getaway day in Aurora and tomorrow the white trucks will be on I-94 and then US 41 heading north. Has anybody found where Base Camp will be yet that is the place to be Thursday.

I remember standing with excitement as the convoy started arriving in Columbus. I've always been like a kid when I can watch an infrastructure being built. It was like being a child again when the carnival would roll into Fort Atkinson (where I grew up). Of course this time I did not win a free duck that pooped all over our yard and chased the neighbors and then oddly disappeared (he must have run away).

So if you guys are feeling silly about being excited, you are not the only ones.

Kitty B'gosh reporting from Oshkosh. - a day late - sorry(rod)

The Main Street location was flurry of activity today as the crews are nearing completion of the Public Enemies set. Many of the store windows are dressed with the appropriate items. Lots of new signs erected today. The Exclusive Company (NOT GONNA DO IT!) is still undergoing its transformation to Walgreen's, but it looks like many of the other stores have or will receive their final touches by tomorrow. I came upon a make-shift welding booth in the alleyway behind the bank. Lot of hand lettering being done, also.

Bo-Neeta, one of my co-workers at my day job threw me a tasty little tid-bit today. Her daughter works with a guy who got a call to come in for a wardrobe fitting on the 7th. His first shoot day is supposed to be Friday, April 11 with one or two days next week. He was also told that he may be moving on when they go to the next location site (Little Bohemia?).

YEA - I revealed dates tee hee

I was told that a truck hauling a street car came past the house this morning. And, I know a guy that was called Monday night to report for a fitting next Monday (14th). He was told he will be on set Wed, Thurs and Fri of next week.

Kitty B'gosh has left the blog

Thanks KBg.

I have some cool postcards of Oshkosh.

This one was postmarked 1908

The Union National Bank from 1886

And if you guys did not like your sun dial - what do you think about THIS!

The Victory Arch 1919

Erected by the City of Oshkosh and dedicated to soldiers and sailors of the Great World War.

News from Aurora

I received an email from Tiffany and I don't think she would mind if I posted it.

We heard that there was going to be a meet and greet, so we stayed behind the Paramount. The crowd was growing larger, and a security guard said there was no way they would do the meet and greet on the street, and that we should stay there. After waiting forever, they said the meet and greet would in fact be in the front of the Paramount. We were not happy, as we were right in front. We went to the street in front and were able to eventually get to the front of the
barricade.

Johnny came out at midnight, and it just started to rain. I was towards the end of the line, and it
seemed to take forever. He finally came over and shook my hand. I thanked him for everything he does for the Make-A-Wish, and he said "Thank you. That's a great organization." I smiled and nodded and released his hand. He has very soft hand. He was very gracious and looks everyone in the eye. I even heard that he spoke to someones daughter on the phone. She said her daughter was a drama major and he asked where she was. She said he was on the phone, so he took the phone and said "Hi drama major."

Speaking of photos. If you send me any this weekend try not to send more then 8 meg at once LOL. In fact many of you have your cameras set to the extreme as far as quality. I suggest you bump it down a little.

Madison - dates are getting a little firmer and I have heard that Universal is pleading with the Capital law makers to allow smoking in the building.

Columbus - I will be attending a meeting with the Auditorium people tonight and then the City Counsel has an open meeting to discuss what to do with ten brief cases of $10s and $20s that Universal left behind ($250,000). I, of course, being a SIM CITY kind of guy, have ideas!

Did you know that Minneapolis used SIM CITY as part of their planning process? Who sai games were for children.

The Book - I have been working on it lately and have mixed feelings. The first problem is that I have too many wonderful photographs. I have enough to fill up sixteen pages with ease, the book has a great look and feel and I am very happy with progress.

The problem is keeping down costs. When you see a photo book normally it is a big thick book with a price of $60 marked down to $20. So far THIS book is 16 glossy pages and will cost $20 and I hope to get $25. $5 will go towards the Auditorium fund. Will people want a 16 page book for $25? It should have 50 or 60 total photos! hmmmmmm.

The thickness us underwhelming - the content is great!
----------------------------------
Editorial vent. I have thought about deleting this but if I do my head might explode so I'll keep it up until I feel better.

I don't know how many of you have been watching the news lately but something occurred over the weekend that took way way too long to happen.

Because of the bravery/desperation of a 16 year old girl, police finally moved on the Yearn for Zion Ranch in Eldorado Texas and rescued 416 children.

I'm sure many of you have seen the news but might not understand just how bad this was.

Adult males would take babies and spank them to make them cry, then hold their faces under the faucet and then more spanking. This would go on for over an hour until the baby was too weak to cry anymore. This was called breaking the child.

And so his or her new life would begin. A life of servitude and punishment. Any mother that did not do exactly what her husband wanted would watch their children was punished for THEIR wrong doing.

The 16 year old that called police was literally risking her own life. From accounts from people that did escape she was desperate enough knowing that if caught, she would "disappear".

Have I shocked you? Good.

Why the hell did it take so long for police to do anything. It's not like this was a surprise. Fly overs of the 1700 acre compound showed there was not one swing set, not one play ground on the grounds. Police knew something was not right yet did nothing. Their is another one of this "camps" in Utah. I watched as 60 Minutes tried to tour the place and the crooked police in the town made them leave.

Police said "well, we really had no proof and nobody ever complained" YEA! I wonder how many phone calls we got from Hitlers Concentration camps!

I'm sorry you guys but this just pisses me off how we can turn our backs on known atrocities under the blanket of "following the law". There comes a time when SOMEONE has to say STOP!

They are trying to arrest ONE male. I say everyone in that places knows what was happening and they should all be locked up for a long long time.

OK - I'll not step off my soap box and slink into the crowd. Sorry for being a downer - doesn't happen often.

A happy side point.

Seems the blog is growing in numbers. I was expecting to see a slow fade of unique readers but looking at same day numbers it's actually growing. Yesterday we had 1,215 unique readers, up from 1,187 last Tuesday. This follows the trend from Monday 1,109 to 1,199.

I say "we" because this is all of our blog - you people all help and make it fun - I just take credit!

Thanks!

Rod

  1. Rod, you may want to read Wed. Northwestern about Carl Laemmle, Universal Pictures. The arch you see across Main St. is made of paper mache'. My guess is J.D. would probably stay in Appleton at the Paper Valley on College Ave. The only upscale hotel in the Fox Valley.

    ReplyDelete
  2. paper mache? First rain and it melts!!

  3. Congrats on bringing up that horrible story of child abuse; so many times people stand by and do nothing. When the PE circus moves on in a couple of months, it would be good to keep reading stories of your town and country. Just got my library copy of PE, I'll buy the updated version with the movie pics in it. looks like I'll pull an allnighter, I've been reading crime fiction for the past year non stop. Karpis looks just like a Ribisi character in those photos! In a couple of days I'll list the actors to look out for in Oshkosh.

  4. Rod,

Well remember after WW2 the world united and swore they would never let the something like the holocaust happen again.

    Cambodia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Darfur....

Unless something can be gained economically countries won't step in to stop these things.

Now if that camp down in Texas had a ton of oil sitting under it...well the Feds would of swooped in a LONG time ago to stop it. Hence this is why our joke of a Prez went in Iraq. It's sociology 101. :)

  5. So, where are they filming on Friday?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Now Capt - don't get me started!!

    Rachel - rumor is . . Oshkosh! :-)

  7. What? Wait a minute…that arch is made of paper mache? I’m confused…was the original arch taken down? So this is a replica?? Or was the original arch paper mache? Whatever its cool looking! LOL

The link above is from msnbc.com (I did the tiny url thing so it wouldn't get cut off). It's big Johnny Depp news - according to msnbc, he's getting married in June. So congrats to Johnny!

  10. Viola,

One of the things that has suffered in my life due to the PE stuff is all the other things in my life. I am very involved in political stuff here and up until all this happened lived and breathed politics. (Michelle was laughing I have a fave political pundit) Anyway, I do listen to talk radio during the day but my level of involvment has gone way down. So, if you ever want to discuss stateside politics... shoot me an email : raetherese@gmail.com

  11. My mom's birthday is Earth day April 22 and I was thinking of getting here a DVD with Johnny Depp.

I think I'll skip Sweeny Todd but was thinking of Chocolat.

Opinions? I loved that movie and she can not think of a JD movie that she has seen!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Chocolat is an excellent choice, while Finding Neverland is also a delightful movie to introduce her to JD.

So, do you have any "where's" for Oshkosh? (I think being specific in my question might help get a better response ... lol)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Rod, Finding Neverland is a must for Mom. Can I squeeze in a bit of politics among the papier mache. Our new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was in your country last week to tell Bush personally he is withdrawing our troops from Iraq. A few days later at the UN, he gave a cheeky howdy salute to Bush across the room. (We call it 'taking the micky')All the idiots in the media at home, oooh, he shouldn't do that, it looks as if he's the deputy sheriff of America. (the media hypocritically supported the previous govt. sending troops to America and Howard's cosy relationship with Bush.)Yesterday he was in Beijing and spoke in fluent Cantonese to an assembly of Chinese uni students criticising China's human rights violation with Tibet. Our media went ooh, we can't upset the Chinese.
We have a reformist govt at last and the media is trying to stifle his every move. Makes me livid. All power to blogs!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Chocolat and Finding Neverland are awesome, but Edward Scissorhands is my favorite Johnny Depp movie, makes me cry every time! Another "mob"/"gangster" type one is Donnie Brasco, he was great in that too.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I vote for Chocolat! That is a great movie, one of my favorites! Hmm, I might have to watch it tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Those movies all sound good, but what about Don Juan DeMarco! I loved that movie too! :-)

Why are you questioning if they are cancelling the Milwaukee filming? Did you hear something!?

  19. Hopefully this blog isns't going to get too political.....we already have way too many sources for that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It hasn't so far, so I wouldn't worry.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think you should by her a whole basket full of JD movies.....Chocolat, Don Jaun Demarco, Finding Netherland, Edward Scissorshands, What's eating Gilbert Grape, oh and what about Benni & Joon? The one i am watching always seems to be my favorite!!

  25. took a trip to oshkosh today. IF they film at Pioneer airport its gonna be hard to see. Seemed to be activity near one hanger in particular. Its gonnabe hard to find outside cause so many modern buildings and the highway. Never know tho. Downtown was busy. All the posters were up on the wall. Still alot of work to do. They were putting the large warlgeen sign up and were working on a alley. Also I still think base camp will be behind main street where they will have been keeping lifts and things. It is between the masonic temple and downtown. And there are signs saying it closes april 9th...even tho I parked there:) Pictures to follow soon.

  27. One thing I want to stay away from is politics. Even if we were all on the same page (and I know were not)it is not something I want to think about AT THE MOMENT.

When DJ and I went to St.John USVI I was amazed at how the rest of the world . . .disappeared.

So when reading/thinking/breathing Public Enemies I would like to same thing.

That is one reason I was hesitant to blog about the "compound". it brings real world problems into our little fantasy land.

I'm not going to be anal about it but just realize that there are people on both sides (or all three sides?) and I wish not to alienate anyone.

I respect others opinions, I don't agree a lot of the time but I respect them.

MILWAUKEE - I just have not heard ANYTHING about Milwaukee.

Base Camp - Find Base Camp and you will find the action. It will be close to filming and probably close to a source for water and electricity.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Perhaps the glitz and glamour of Osh-Vegas have made Milwaukee loose its luster? I haven't seen or heard anything about it either.

Are they filming on Saturday too? I feel like the gal with all kinds of questions today. But when you are driving a couple hours, you want to make sure you are prepared.

Thanks for the Base Camp tip Rod. I won't be able to say "I'm Rachel from the blog, can I use your bathroom?" that much in Oshkosh :) Thanks again, Jenny :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Rod, I wasn't referring to your statements about the compound. I really feel you are right on the money with what you said. So often we turn our heads & don't want to get involved. That whole situation is outrageous and others like it are beyond belief. I certainly hope they bring those responsible to justice. i haven't "blogged" much so this whole experience is new to me. I love your site with all of it's info....please keep up the great job...we appreciate it! Thanks!
Any new info on Little Bohemia??

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm sorry if I offended you anonymous. I did tell Viola to email me if she ever wanted to talk stateside politics :)

Believe me, I am digging the break from all of it too. Like Rod said, this our safe break from reality. I agree, let's keep it that way :)

BTW - I believe there are three males here.

Me, Ty and earth quack dude and maybe Clark Kent at times.

  33. Hi,

latest rumor on beginning of Oshkosh shooting is a Thursday night - Friday wee-hours night shoot (ending around 3:00 a.m.)

My step-daughter is in the know of where base camp will be (will have to squeeze exact street location out of her yet).

Rod - fantastic blog, have been with ya since filming in Columbus day 1.

    Cheers,

  35. The way to get to the Pioneer Airport, the back way. Is to go to the Sacred Heart Cemetery and go all the way to the back, and you could be within walking distance of either seeing, it or getting closer. The airplane of interest would be the one that looks like the Spirit Of St. Louis. (Tri/Motor Ford)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I scouted out the pioneer airport..went to the cemetery...all that good stuff. it all depends on how shut down they have it...i imagine they will have security all around watching for people....cars late at night on those roads will be suspicious. Key would be knowing someone whos house backs up to the pioneer airport!

    ReplyDelete
  37. About those Johnny wedding rumors... this same rumor with almost the same wording has been around for about a year, but the date keeps changing. Depp is an extremely private person, he wouldn't be dealing with people who would leak the info if he were getting married. It originated in a UK "tabloid" type of publication. IF Depp were to marry? You'd hear about it after the fact.

  39. Thanks for the Thursday night scoop. Anyone going to be around that evening ?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know about base camp but they have been leaving all of the extra machines (the Z lookin ones) in the parking lot behind the first national building and behind all of the shops on main. Signs up a few days ago said parking lot closed april 9th (today). That may be a possibility since it is right behind all of the action. Have photos of almost every day so far - does anyone know what the best website (free!) to post them so i can share them is?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ty and I both have the same thought, that base camp will be the parking lots behind bank. That whole backside of the block, and across the side street seem a totally logical choice. Washington Street is closed, so they come out of their trailors walk around the corner and they are on the set. Hubby and I parked back there the day we went scouting and that was my *very* first thought... "I bet THIS will be base camp!"

I'll hopefully go up Friday after work, cruise by Pioneer to see if anything is happening/can be seen, then head over to the film site.

Anyone know if there is filming happening Saturday (in Oshkosh)?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I might be around thursday evening. I have classes until 5pm and then classes Friday morning starting at 8am, so i don't know how long i'll stay, but i'll probably check it out :)

  45. Chocolat is a fabulous choice! My mom loves it! Also, wishing I did not leave so early from Aurora. I had heard about the meet and greet however was unable to stay the rest of the time (previous commitments). Anyone know if there will be a meet and greet in Oshkosh?

    ReplyDelete
  46. How come my comment got removed from last night? Anyway I know where he is staying and would like to comment again on how much this site rocks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Rod, you have made me feel better about this obsession I have with everything, "Public Enemies". I do feel alittle silly about it, but it is so cool to have a huge movie production in your backyard.

I heard from a source in Oshkosh that the studio rented some very big houses on the Lake for the stars of the movie. She knows the landlord. She said that JD requested a six bedroom on the lake. Maybe they are staying right in Oshkosh?
Thanks Rod for the Great info. I can't miss a day!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nice tidbit from Aurora. I liked the part about "Hi, drama major!" on the phone with JD. Awww, he's so nice, isn't he?

Great postcards! That victory arch is cool looking! I was wondering why it wasn't there anymore. (Don't flame me, but I also liked the sun dial).

That whole scenario in Texas - wtf? I don't know what else to say, but that is some crazy s$^@#((). Sorry, please don't delete me!

Thanks again for the great update, Rod, Viola, Cpt. Morgan, everyone. It's no wonder your numbers are GROWING!

  51. Rachel:

I will be around Thursday night. My friend and I had planned on doing some recon work, but if we know there will be filming, we'll do that instead. Shoot me an email.

    Rudy:

Big houses on the lake? I'm trying to think where that could be. Neenah has HUGE houses on the lake. Then again, I don't hang out on the lake around here, so there could be newer ones that went up that I don't know about. I know there's big houses somewhat close to the lake. Hmmmm....

  52. I was told that because of the Union, they don't shoot on weekends? Does anyone know if that is true? I imagen the crowds on the weekends would be very BIG.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was called to be an extra last Saturday and went in on Monday to be fitted and cut. It appears I will be in two scenes. I was told that I would be needed on Friday to film a scene at the coffee house. I will be one of the people in the restaurant. I was also told that I might be needed at a shoot up in appleton on Monday. They didn't tell me anything else. Anyone else here anything about this? Not sure what they would use up there.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree wholeheartedly about your
    comments on the encampment, Rod.
This country needs to wake up to these problems! Love all of the photos and info coming out of Oshkosh. Hope to get up there Saturday even if they won't be filming!

  56. Well everyone coming up this weekend should stop at the gas station off 9th ave (9th ave is exit 117 i believe). Its an open pantry/mobil and i work there so everyone should come in and say hi! hehe. I'll be working late friday night, and midday saturday and sunday, and when i'm not working i'll probably be somewhere near the downtown area. I agree that we should meet up somewhere sometime though, it would be fun :)

thanks for the updates!!! May not be able to make it to Oshkosh so looking forward to getting updates/pics here (thanks Ty for yours)

Hope Madison filming is more than in the Capitol building...can't imagine the crowds if dates get confirmed for Madison....all those UW students and downtownies YIKES

Just got to the "Lady in Orange" chapter of PE book....yep hard to believe all this stuff really happened it does read like a movie script.....

I too am letting things slide to live in "PE world" for a while....once filming is done here it will be hard to go back to "normal"

    thanks all for the info

  64. lynn-thanks for the link to the great set pics---such a step back in time--love it.

Good luck to all venturing to OshKosh!

Rod-I think we all get sick when we hear some of the atrocities happening in our country that go unchecked--glad that compound finally was busted!

JD movies--don't know how old your mom is, but mine is in her 80s and her first intro to JD was in the Pirates films which she enjoyed. However, since she saw FNeverland, she's become a full fledged fan! So that's my vote if she hasn't seen any of his films and Chocolat is right up there, too. Then, if she likes those, introduce B&Joon, and others that have some more eccentric characters. It really is hard to choose just one!

  65. Emahlee - no call backs yet from what I have heard.

They are still working on the set there.

  68. Referring to the Texas story, it's scary to think in this day and age something like that could happen. I've seen a few clips here and there while I watch the news before I go to school and it's just really sad.

This is going to sound really dumb but I'm going to ask it anyways..I saw an article in Star Magazine (my aunt got a subscription and sent a free subscription to my family..I'm not going to deny looking at it but I really look at it as an example of how NOT to be a journalist as I am currently going to school to be one)..
Anywho, there was an article about Johnny and how he was really nice to the people in Columbus and even invited 400+ locals to eat with the cast and crew on March 18. I highly doubt it's true (and my mom asked me about it) and I figured what better place to ask than here! I tried to find the link for the article on their site and couldn't find it because I was curious if they used any of the blog readers pictures (there are no photo credits on the pictures in the magazine)...

I'm sad to say that I'll be glad when April 22 gets here and is gone!! I'm sad because it's my dad's 78th birthday and I don't like wishing his birthday away!!

Any how, on a happier note...so I see you're traveling. have blog, will travel ~ very cool:)

  70. Captain Morgan--
I haven't seen 21 Jump Street yet so I can't comment on it. I considered not watching it because I heard he didn't like working on the show at the end, but when I was in Crown Point for the filming someone said to watch it because it's cheezy and whatnot. But I'm planning on checking it out in the summer because a library or two in the local library exchange have the first two seasons.

    Rod--
As for a recommended Depp movie for your mom, what about the "Pirates" movies? But I'd have to agree, "Benny and Joon," "Edward Scissorhands," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" or "Finding Neverland" would all be solid choices (though I have to admit, I shut "Neverland" off the first time I saw it). Some movies to stray away from (unless your mom likes scary movies) might be "From Hell" or "Secret Window" (both good movies in their own right, not sure about birthday gift for mom material).

    -Kristen

    ReplyDelete
  71. Kristen-I saw that story as well and I think you pegged it right--it was in STAR magazine, so consider the source-lol Johnny does spends time with the crew on the set and often buys them all gifts when filming wraps, but this seems something that's exaggerated. It probably was just everyone eating lunch together since it was a break and they were all eating at the same time---now if it was true, well, wouldn't surprise me either.

ty-I felt there were only a few episodes of 21 Jump Street that really showed Johnny's acting talent, but, I did plow through the episodes on DVD through Netflix!

Osh-Vegas group(love that word--I think someone here used that on JDR)---keeping my fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate for everyone--keep warm!

  72. I thought Neverland was a real good movie but it seems people love it or . . . not so much.

Pirates? Well . . . a little aggressive for my mom maybe. Not into action adventures (I don't think).

No word book - photo book of the Columbus shoot - I might have an interesting blog later today.

Probably make some enemies in Columbus! LOL My thoughts on the Common Counsel meeting.

  73. Captain Morgan - I *loved* 21 Jump Street back in the day! I was checking Amazon the other day to see if the DVDs are available, and I'll probably get them, but I fear I'll sit there cringing and laughing as I watch them after all this time. LOL

Weather for today (Thursday) sounds pretty crappy...windy, rainy, cold. Good luck to those who venture up here for the early bird fun. :)

  74. I LOVED 21 Jump Street. I was the big geek that was at Best Buy the first day each season was released! I even have the soundtrack to the show.

My uncle has always called Oshkosh Osh-Vegas so it is hard for me to remember Oshkosh sometimes :)

Looks like the next few days are going to be kind of blustery but I think after the winter we have had here, 35 and cold is nothing :) Lots of rain for sure. I am glad it isn't snow.

Well everyone have a fabulous day!

  75. Don't worry Captain Morgan, you are not alone. I loved 21 Jumpstreet too!

  76. I was right there with you Rachel buying the 21 Jump Street DVD's the first day they came out. My daughter, then 9, was a bit grossed out that I had the hots for the same guy on HER show! LOL As I re-watch them now, if you look carefully, you see little bits and pieces of other characters Johnny has yet to play at the time he did the show. It's true he didn't want to stay on the show and you can tell (to me anyway) in the later seasons that he doesn't like it. The McQuaid brothers STILL crack me up!!
On the DVD for Mom....Chocolate is good but Johnny's not in it as much as others. So, maybe 2 movies...Chocolate and Don Juan DeMarco :)

  77. as a photographer in oshkosh..i love all the people walking around with their cameras....yesterday was a blast.....helping people with their camera settings trying to take pics of the window displays without getting flash bounce, etc. It's nice to see all the people downtown....
I don't think i've ever seen so many photographers...can't wait until the finishing touches are put on...but man is it dark downtown at night without the street lights!!!!!

  78. Well I'm glad others enjoy watching old shows and remembering the past. I was a kid when that show was on and it brings back fond memories when I see clips on the internet. So what if you think it was cheesy. I'd rather watch that then some of the crappy reality shows that dominate TV today :)
