Sippin Beer and Eatin Bon Bons (trs=2)

Wow what an exciting day! For a SLUG perhaps. Still what can I say, I'm a simple guy with simple pleasures.

The day started wit ha drive to Oshkosh, about an hour. Got there, picked up Scott the driver of the 1933 Graham (only three in existance in the world).

OH - this is not a full length blog - cut me some slack here SLEEPY

We got to the garage where all the cars are kept and as we're lining up to leave they ask Scott if he can drive this old pickup. He says yes (not knowing how HARD it would be to drive) and I get to drive the Graham into town. SWEET!!!! I love that car.

So I have my moment of fun driving into town. I park and well. That was the last of the excitement for the day! It is now 7:00am.

We stand around and move the car once to another street and are told to basically disappear.

As luck would have it we can disappear into the New Moon cafe. and as luck would have it the new Moon is RIGHT across from the bank being robbed.

So for the next few hours we are allowed to eat and drink on the house.

the real excitement was the weather. 40mph winds kick up hard enough to roll up the cobblestone streets. The awnings are trying to be ripped off. The extras and actors are constantly losing their hats and fly down the street for a block. The doors of the bank are opening on their own so someone has to hold them shut.

Crew are coming in with wind burn and I guarantee there are a lot of people dehydrated tonight (at supper I drank eight glasses of water and am still drinking).

The scene was the bank robbery in South Dakota. Stephan Grahm makes his first appearance and has a cool roll.

He is helping rob a bank and some guy runs around the corner and jumps him. Then he is SUPPOSE to be thrown through the window. DIDN'T HAPPEN the first few times. The guy is a little big and time #1 didn't make it and just fell on the outside. Time #2 he is just placed on the window sill.

But finally they got it down and he is thrown through the window and then machine gunned. AWESOME.

Lots of gun fire today.

Lunch was a 2:30 and I saw Pam and had my photo taken in her underwear shop :-) Swimming suits and other "lady" things.

We got back to set about 3:00 and then waited for 2 1/2 hours for another set up NOT involving us!

So really - that is it.

I'm sure there is much much more but my little brain thingys are sparkling and the thoughts are all jumbled. I'll probebly think of all the exciting things that happened tomorrow.

SO - that's it AT THE MOMENT!
------------------------------------------
Thursday morning addendum

One of the amazing things about this movie is just how much is being shot on location. The problem with location shooting is that they have a problem controlling what the public is actually allowed to know about the film.

Sites like this one and others(??) are always snooping around trying to find information and I have to think that this is a love hate relationship. Many things are OK but sometimes it is a real pain in the butt to keep somethings secret.

I applaud Universial for shooting in this manner.

I am assuming that since this is a screen play it will not follow the book exactly. I feel today is one of those secret days and because of that I'm not even taking my little camera to the set. I respect Universial and understand. Fear not.

I'm anxious to see how hard they come down on OTHERS for trying to snoop around as the "NO CAMERA" thing has been getting stronger and stronger every day.

With that - off I go to be a good little boy.

Side note - this is REALLY going to be one kick ass movie. I'd like to see how much it is REALLY costing. 100 mil - phhhht I think not - by a LOT

Rod

  1. Lots of cool scenes filmed today. More gunfire and getaways. Johnny joked around allot on the set. Seemed like he was in a good mood.

  3. Was there three times, twice with the kids and then once tonight for his meet & greet. got some photos, though nothing really good tonight, and today was VERY hard to get anything from what I saw/heard. Much tighter.

Here is what I Did get tonight-I have two to post of the shots I Got during the day but you can't really make out too much.

  4. Rod,

Thanks for your update. Hope you get some decent sleep tonight.

  5. Rod you are so lucy along with anyone that lives in the city. I really wish I could go there every day after work to see the filming, but it looks like my next chance will be about a week from the last time (on friday). After that I don't know if I will get to see anymore of the filming. I really hope I will get to see some filming on Friday yet. Anyone know when they will be wrapping up on Friday?

  6. Rod-thanks for your update and yes, please catch up on sleep! Thanks for those that posted pics/summaries of the filming today.

  8. We were there for the meet and greet! It was pretty crowded! Johnny came through a line of what seems to be 3000 people and said his hellos! He talked to everyone he could reach. He took time to chat with my 2 year old and kiss her. What a nice guy!

  9. kamie - I can see how you might have been disappointed about the meet and greet shots (and the experience)

for a moment I thought I was the big long haired head in your shots but I didn't recognize anyone else near me so I know it wasn't me.

I felt almost a little heartbroken for JD afterwards, it would kill me to have to go through that all the time. Makes me appredciate his graciousness all the more, wow...

  10. Kamie - I jsut re-read what i wrote and want you to know that I found your meet and greet shots very intriguing. I understand what happened technically but the chaos was depicted in such a palpable way, almost like being there...

  11. shakenbsis, I know what you mean. I feel guilty being there twice now. I doubt I will make the trek again.

  12. Dear Osh!

Don't even think it... Your's and Evan's story is one of the most moving things about the Oshkosh experience for me.

I've got a jumble in my head, guess I'll have to blog it out soon... YOU are a huge blessing = )

  13. If anyone has a photo from the meet and greet tonight with a little girl (2) in red with brown curly hair please email me the photo!! The one we have is not very good. herbiekrueger@earthlink.net

    Thanks Much

    Thanks

  15. Rod, Good chance of rain up here next few days. Bring your gear. Did you see the newsboys out selling 1930s style papers?

  16. anonymous 1:09am - I don't have a pic of your lovely daughter as I didn't have your permission, but I did give her a mention here. http://tinyurl.com/3kbwzc

You guys were so much fun!

  17. So rumblings are that Thursday is it? Can you guys keep us posted if you hear anything for Friday? I'm thinking about heading up there and would hate to miss anything since they might finish up in the afternoon on Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've also heard a few rumblings that they are behind. Like anon@4:52, do you know what's up for Friday, Rod? Besides rain.

I'm glad you're having this experience. How lucky for you! We're all living vicariously through you!

  19. Agreed. Any Friday info would be appreciated :)

Rod, just remember all the little people :)

    It's long, sorry. LOL

Or if you'd just like to snoop my pics from Monday:

(Michelle, thanks for the info on how I can organize them. I did manage to do it, but I like the way the 'photostream' looks and works though, so I'll stick with slightly disorganized pics for now.)

  21. Rod... your photographic memory needs to bring back the days event because you won't have your camera! I totally understand there is a fine line that Universal is drawing with fan photos. I really think that what you are reporting from the shooting events are only adding to the hype of the movie! I bet everyone here will be the first ones in line when Public Enemies is released! Thanks again for your AWESOME reporting!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have a feeling that Wisconsin will have quite a few sold out theatres come July 2009 :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Searching for a slideshow or photobucket or yesterdays meet and greet along with shooting photos!! Anybody??

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks again Rod for keeping us as updated as you can. You addressed something that I knew was inevitable and wondered just when Universal would start banning cameras. There was way too much embargoed material getting out there. I've tried to begin not allowing pics that possibly could be from actual filming. And it's tough to know what's what.

    ReplyDelete
  25. From Rod: There WILL be filming tomorrow, he just doesn’t know how long. Also, today streets are blocked off around them for at least two city blocks, so even if you do come downtown you may not be able to see much of the filming. Security is super tight today and he thinks that they will probably have to spend the day inside away from any action!

    ReplyDelete
  26. There will be a reshoot near Oshkosh today Thurs, This may be known to others, but to keep faith with Depp Throat I'm not revealing where or what.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I sure hope this comes out on Blu Ray right away, we'll need to see every little detail!!!

On a side note, the church in Winchester that Public Enemies used as a home base on Tuesday(Grace Lutheran), just so happens to be the same church I'm shooting a wedding at on Saturday. I hope they left something for me to find!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I liked your addendum Rod - and I have to reiterate just how much I love this place. thanks sooooo much for all you do...

I don't think I caught a glimpse of you yesterday, but I MAY have seen your car = ) even that is doubtful considering how far away we were kept yesterday. If it is even further today and beyond I am so glad I came when i did. As it was you really coudn't see anything.

    with respect,
    Betty

dj - thanks so much for keeping us all updated while Rod is "busy" = ) very much appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, there have to be some surprises, right? It sounds like Oshkosh has been very exciting!! Thanks for all the awesome photos, everyone. I've said it before, but they are such amazing pictures.

The whole experience of a movie of this caliber being made in our backyard is surreal. I feel a little sorry for you Oshkosh folks...it's sooo tiring being so excited and trying to find the perfect spot for the perfect photo op. I remember being a little relieved that I could get back on schedule after they left Columbus.

    :p

  30. Shakenbsis: I have also shared your feelings of feeling bit sorry for Johnny having to endure all the fans and such everyday and how draining it must be for him …BUT also remember that Mr. Depp is being paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to be in this movie for just a few months of work. So on the other hand, I don’t feel TOO sorry….because if someone were paying ME that much money to play dress up and have fun making a movie (and I mean this respectfully), I don’t think I would mind having to greet my “fans” either. I think he GETS that….that’s what makes him such a great person!

  31. all I know is, I'm watching Edward Scissor Hands and Sweeney Todd back to back on my upcoming lazy Sunday.

  32. Kamie, thanks for the pics & don't feel bad. It looks like I was about the same distance from JD as you were & my pics didn't turn out either. My camera either didn't know what to focus on because of all the comotion or I was bumped while takeing the shot? I could have tried more but just wanted to actually look him in the eyes & I'll have that memory. I like your pic w/JD with his hand on someone's shoulder...so sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Shakenbsis, I also felt sorry (& grateful) for Johnny. He certainly does not have to do all the extra things he does (& many celebs don't). I would have been afraid if I were him of such a large crowd. There were so many fans (aroung 6 blocks worth?) & it took him like 1-1/2 because he took his time, looking people in the eye, shaking hands, talking to them. And even still when he was driving away he had his window down & waved to the very last fan (me by the stop sign before he drove away!) I called thanks to him & he waved, nodded his head & quietly replied.

  36. So when they say cracking down on cameras, does that mean us poor fools standing two blocks away trying to get a pic of *anything* worthy?? And then to hold people back even farther.... *phew* I, too, am glad I went when I did!

Someone else kinda mentioned being glad when the production moves on. I feel the same. I haven't been there nearly as much as others but I'm rather looking forward to when they leave the area because I won't have that temptation. LOL (Although, I'm already wondering if I should return to Columbus...doh!)

Someone also mentioned how crazy Wisconsin is for this production. Is anyone finding that outside of this blog group, an amazingly large part of the population in your own area either doesn't know about the movie, or just doesn't care? That's hard for me to comprehend sometimes! Soooo many people around me just don't care/know...and treat me like I'm some freakish obsessive stalker, like it's some obscure little quirky film being made.

    *rolls eyes*

    ReplyDelete
  37. The people I know/work with don't get why I went to Columbus to watch either. They think I'm a little goofy. Now whenever someone here's something they come running to my office. LOL! I would love to have gone to Oshkosh, but I have too much going on at work right now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I've always been goofy...it's all good for me!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Debsmad... You are so right! I am a movie freak and I am SO EXCITED about this film. I loved the Dillinger gang since my first visit to Little Bohemia when I was 8 and loved Johnny Depp since 21 Jump Street. The two coming together is the biggest thrill for me. Then you add that this movie is being made in my backyard.... wow... I am over the moon!!!! I want to soak up every little detail while it is happening and try to remember it to tell my grandkids about it! LOL!

Many at work were excited after the kids and I went to Columbus to see the filming but their excitement has since subsided. My only outlet is this site and Johnny Depp Reads! I cannot to get home after work so I can access these sites [darn school district has blogs blocked, ;o)]

I am wondering if the excitement will build when filming comes to Madison!?!? I know that mine will be!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's pretty funny too, the people at work all know by now that I'm hooked on this, so it makes me chuckle everytime someone tries to impress me with news they've heard. It's always such a 'that's sooo yesterday' type feeling. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi!
How was it decided what each extra would be doing in the movie? Some extras were given a much bigger role than others.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I felt so "in the know" giving Streetwise the heads up about several things I had "heard" before he had...first and foremost the silly Christian Bale rumor...really that was just common sense, and second the scoop on the Lost actress and Dave Wenham.

I have always loved "gangsters"...I played Bonnie & Clyde instead of house and love reading books about outlaws and the bad guys. I can't wait for this movies to come out. I wonder if Wisconsin will have a special premier?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey Osh... Wouldn't that be amazing!!!! We could all meet and share stories.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I should add that Rod had once suggested renting a theater for a special showing. Maybe that is till a possibility!

    ReplyDelete
  45. So does any know if any filming is going to be done on Friday? I have Friday off and don't want the 4 hour drive to be a wasted trip. Thank you so much for any info.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks everyone my hubby makes fun of me for wanting to see Johnny ("going on Deppwatch" his phrase) and seeing them make the movie.

Actually thought the one day and few hours I saw of them filming in Columbus was fabulous! I am a movieholic (even my job involves dvds, music and books!)

Yep most of the people I work around don't understand why I get so excited talking about Public Enemies and Johnny Depp ( and make fun of me doing it) Glad there's some others out there that do get it and thanks for your company, your input and your gracious sharing of all things PE!!!

Yes Johnny is making millions BUT he dosen't HAVE to do those meet & greets.....he is very gracious in doing that...it just amazes me.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I too am getting mocked at work that I am turning into a Johnny Stalker and blogaholic
Unfortunately on the 29th for the return to Columbus I will be in the Dells at the Kalahari with my kids...:(
Too me it is the whole history, filming process, pictures and Johnny stories are what I am hooked on!
keep up the good work all and Thank you !!!

    LOL!

  53. osh, which Christian Bale rumor are you talking about? It's a good thing Streetwise has such in the know people feeding him information, that's all I'll say!

    ReplyDelete
  54. dabsmad, is that picture at http://tinyurl.com/6apk2y from Monday? It looks like the moment when Johnny tipped his hat and smiled to the fans. My camera died at that very moment, so it is great to see this picture!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anon - I'm assuming it's from Monday, but that's not my pic. That must have been earlier in the day because in the time I was there, the only walk back Johnny did was not with Emilie.

I really like that pic though! There is no photo credit...I wonder who's it is? I'd like to see more of his/her pics.

    ReplyDelete
  56. To whoever asked "So does any know if any filming is going to be done on Friday? I have Friday off and don't want the 4 hour drive to be a wasted trip."

--Yes, the plan is to continue shooting on Friday. However, they will be shooting interior scenes of the bank on Main street - the inside looks pretty neat. You won't be able to see anything as a fan on the outside.

    ReplyDelete
  57. JP......Yes I saw Marion Cotillard. I did not recognize her at first (shorter hair, no makeup, etc.) Her voice gave it away though. She is not filming in Oshkosh, word is she is going to met with some of the relatives of the character she is playing. I'm not sure if the relatives live in Oshkosh or somewhere near by. She was on set though.

People are still thinking Bale is going to show up for the robbery scenes...though from reading an article on the EAA website it did give the impression he WAS in town for that Friday night airport shoot. From what I understand nothing has been confirmed.

  60. Some guys have all the luck! Rod, your experience sounds incredible, if not really long. But then again, us common slugs are putting in long hours too -- so at least you get to see something cool while you're out there! I take it the Kurth is out for tonight?

I'm putting a call out for pictures/video if anyone got it of a cute little Chinese girl meeting Johnny last night. I was prepped and ready to capture the moment, but people kept pushing so I didn't get a great shot. Having said that, Johnny was amazing and sweet with my girl. I'm a happy mama despite the rudeness of other people. Julia wants to go meet "Johnny Bopp" again today. Hee. I've created a fangirl.

  62. I think that just getting to see any part is a special thing for those of us in town. I have not seen the stars and won't get a chance too, but my nephew got to shake his hand.
You are a very lucky person, and I am enjoying reading along with the process.
I loved seeing the cars, and may have even saw you the other day, if you were driving or a passenger when they blocked Main St even further down, past King Clift Auto.
