Flippity floppity - It's Starting to Grow Thin

So you have probably put two and two together and figured out that Universal will NOT be here this week and WILL be here NEXT week . . . . maybe.

I found this out yesterday while talking to Adam Boor the location dude who had just had obscenities yelled at him from a passing motorist. I was shocked at first but as the day wore on I was feeling some interesting vibes around town.

Don't get me wrong, Columbus was and still is excited to have a movie being made in their front yard, but I can see some cracks in the pavement as schedules are constantly being changed. Monday? now it's Wednesday? Thursday? NEXT WEEK Monday?

People are rolling their eyes and the words "I can't wait until we get back to normal" style talk were heard.

It's not like they are mad or anything. It's the constant unknown, the road is open, the road is closed, people looking around the corners for Johnny asking where is he where is he. The visitor center talking to people that have flown in from Maine and other States thinking THIS is the day and then having to explain it was changed yet again, NOW it will be NEXT week.

No one is faulting Universal, they are here to make a movie and everybody understands that and is bending backward to help. They also understand that the making of a movie is always subject to change so no one is outwardly complaining.

And while there will be excitement when they DO come back to town for shooting. I think many people are getting a tiny bit stressed out and are looking forward to "normal" again.

Madison - a lot of people around the world have never seen the Capital of Wisconsin. It looks like the Capital of the US but a few inches shorter.

This is a photo from Meagan of the Wisconsin Capital.

Another from Meagan is of the square with the Glass Bank in the background. Probably won't be in the movie LOL

Also some people were wondering what the Poser house looked like in Columbus.

OK - gotta run - busy busy grrrrrrr!

  3. Rod,
You missed a great day (but no machine guns), drove the Graham all morning. Lots of blog people stopped to say "hi" if you stopped down for the filming or want to share car pictures I would love to see them. (I am not supposed to take picture in the car)graham_paige@hotmail.com

    Thanks

  4. Awww hell. I'd better get in the basement.

(that actually does look like RD's greenhouse tipped over)

  6. wow...crazy picture! :)

is your car in any of my pictures?

  7. Rod, You tricked me! Hook line and sinker! Good one! LOL...thanks for the morning laugh.

    Have a nice day!

there isnt much, when i was there watching, they were just doing background shots. there were some cool cars though!

  10. Thanks for sharing.
Ahhhh...makes me miss my college days in Madison. That one shot of the extras walking by the old cars...with that huge ultra modern all glass building in the background......good stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hope Meagan gives me the OK to post them.

You would not believe how MadCity has changed in the last 5 years.

Lots of construction = you should see State Street - wait - you did! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  12. not a problem about posting the pics!

i kinda took that picture on purpose...the old cars, the extras, glass building..kinda funny!

    ReplyDelete
  13. oh yeah, and state street, what a flipping mess! yuck!
im glad i had my sister in law with me, she is a student at the uw, and she knew her way around all that crap.

  14. maegen, those are two BEAUTIFUL pictures! Thank you for sharing.

it was such a beautiful day yesterday, today as well.

  16. I've always really wanted to take a vacay to watch a space shuttle launch (well, unless I can get there yet in '08, not gonna happen, another dream pulverized.) And I always figured, no matter how carefully I arranged it, I'd still have a less than 30% chance of actually seeing the shuttle launch. But had I been able to arrange it, I still would have taken that chance...and made plenty of plans to be happy otherwise when the inevitable funky fuel cell acted up at T minus 3 hours.

I'm sorry about the people who traveled here from great distances. I hope they get something out of their hejira anyway. But I hope they understand the second law of thermodynamics as it applies to parades, for example...things fall apart, no matter how much
the origins went off like clockwork. It is what it is. Not even the military can pull the big ones off according to perfect plan-- hence their invention of the wonderful term SNAFU.

And I hope that whoever berated Mr. Boor in such (sorryIcan'tstopmyself!) boorish fashion was just a yayhoo of the type that curses something (old ladies in the crosswalk, the long line at Pick'N'Save) every ten minutes anyway, perhaps even someone who didn't know who he was. I hope.

I was behind a semi headed south through the main intersection yesterday afternoon. It turned right, but that barricade was just a bit too close. Wham, down on its side, sandbags slapping. I don't know why that made me laugh so hard.

  18. Just an update - they are filming Reds the burial today in a place no one knows (Well - almost LOL) or has even mentioned in the last few months!

Comes from two sources so THAT little bit on a problem is being taken care of.

    Mann is very sneaky!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sounded like that was the plan today from some people last night. glad noone knows where it is..almost:)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ok trivia! Anyone know who this is. I was guessing the women playing anna sage ...MM was spending alot of time looking at patches of hair she had dyed different colors on the back of her head..and comparing them to her face.
    http://tinyurl.com/5of2r7

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rod, Wouldn't you agree that the less we know about the burial of Red now, the bigger the surprise and enjoyment in July 2009?

    ReplyDelete
  22. bale.
    http://tinyurl.com/5pm6pt
album that these are on in photobucket I will add to over time..so check back:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ty, thanks for the "Anna Sage" pic. The actress Mann has chosen for Sage is the 38 year old Yugoslav born Branka Katic who has a small dedicated following. This film has a number of smaller roles where some up and coming actor (or actress) can make a name for themselves. Katic is one of these people. Her fans says she is both beautiful and a fantastic actress. She will be in one of the potentially standout secondary roles.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rod, thanks for the Poser house picture. It's really impressive (house and pic). Do you know whether the house looks the same as it did in 1933? Also, was there earlier filming already at the Poser house? If so, what scenes were filmed earlier?

    ReplyDelete
  25. garyandyvonne I would agree 100%

    ReplyDelete
  26. garyandyvonne second question - I know but I would have to shoot myself first.

From someone that was involved it is an interesting story (which I do not know).

    ReplyDelete
  27. To Anonymous who is posting the shooting location, don't make me turn off Anonymous style posts.

    I value their secrecy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is the first film I have ever followed in detail and I spend more time than I should here and on IMDb and Johnny Depp Reads. (Rod, I do enjoy your blog.)

Most people are great (IMDb does have a few pills), but there does seem a few malicious souls that deliberately want to cause trouble or ruin the enjoyment of others by giving out "secret info" that SHOULD be kept secret. We have to be on our guard not to let the spoilers spoil the film for the rest of us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. did i miss something? was there a post that you removed rod?
yeah, dont want people ruining the film!

    ReplyDelete
  30. There are a number of cool pics (here and there) of Christian Bale and Billy Crudup from yesterday's action in Madison. Pretty impressive. One thing that stands out is the 1930s fashion. Mann picked an Oscar winning fashion designer to do the costuming. What a job she is doing! I have heard from some extras that she is almost as much a stickler as MM. AND you've got to love the hats. Why did hats ever go out of fashion? The fedoras in PE are knocking my socks off. In fact, I will probably buy one to wear when I go see PE in July 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I disagree with Anonymous 2:56 totally.

If someone wants to come to Columbus they are welcome and you will probably see a lot.

Just beware that schedules change and as one crew member mentioned to me.

Mann is driven and the peddle is to the meddle. 6 days a week balls to the wall from here on out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'll tell ya why Fedoras went out of style.

    WIND!

I love mine but man - it's like wearing an umbrella on your head on a windy day LOL

They are not suppose to fit like a baseball cap. Loose and comfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Columbus folk - beware of the normalcy you wish for. Waiting for MM is like a kid waiting for Santa (though not as predictable). But before you know it, MM will have delivered his "present" and he and his army will be gone. I don't know the details, but I recently came across a commentary in an Oshkosh paper about the city not taking the full advantage of the filming experience. Enjoy the anticipation of MM "coming", because there will probably be a let down after his army permanently withdraws for other locations.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So are there plans to keep the downtown store front in Columbus in movie style at all for tourist purposes or does everything come down at the end? I wasn't sure if there was an option to keep any of the nostalgic look or not.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rod - Wasn't Reds burial supposed to be a night shot?

Also, Does anyone else think that Christian Bale has lost a lot of weight for this film since he was in 3:10 to Yuma? He looked "Thicker" in that movie. The pictures I've seen from yesterday, he looks like a skinny mini. But maybe it is because his hair is slicked back and it was long in 3:10. I dunno

    ReplyDelete
  36. The businesses WANTED to keep the awnings but Universal decided to take back their offer I guess and gave them to Oshkosh ?????

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think we have to keep the Cafe' sign up just to keep fooling shakenbis

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for the info. I think it would have been a great idea to keep the stuff up, at least until the movie came out. Because I'm sure people will still pop in and out of Columbus between now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I live over a 10 hour drive from Columbus. But my wife and I have already talked about a possible future vacation in Wisconsin that might include a PE pilgrimage to filming locations where there is something worthwhile to see. I hope Columbus is one of those locations.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have so many pics from yesterday. Not sure what all to put up. I will respect the wishes of some things the crew said and not post anything of actual filming on the net. they asked that and I will respect it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ty, thanks for your pictures - they are great and gets me even more excited about the film.

I have one question you might know the answer. Is the filming in Madison completely done? I thought there was another date (maybe Thursday), but maybe it was just an alternative for possible bad weather on Tuesday.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It sounded like its always up in the air now till they wrap that night. I can see them coming back cause the second half of the day seemed to be dragging. dunno if they got all the stuff they needed. Maybe they did maybe not..i dunno. So i guess the best answer I have is..I DUNNO!:)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just heard on the radio that Joel & Ethan Coen (who did No Country For Old Men) are scouting locations in Wisconsin to do their next film. It said they are are also scoping out Minnesota, but the new incentives are better in Wisconsin.

No clue who would be in it, or what it's about. I just had to laugh because of the chaotic fun we're all having on this current Hollywood ride. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ty & Meagan - Thanks, great pics! = )

Mary - Remind me when next we meet to tell you a story about my Shuttle launch experience! (too long to tell here but it involved a near arrest in the great state of Mississippi!)

Thanks Rod - I'll probably fall for it again, always looking for a coffee shop!

    I missed all y'all today...

    ReplyDelete
  44. mary - were you in a tornado??

  45. That was very nice of you to welcome people from out of state, Grinder. The small towns do get crowded but there's room for all. It's nice to gather together over this special event and meet fellow fans.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The Coen bros are from MN. Would be cool if they decide to do it. ( were looking down by milwaukee I believe. But who knows...lets try not to piss off this film crew first!:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. debsmad - are the Coens the brothers who did Johnny's Ripper movie, 'From Hell'?

    ReplyDelete
  48. ty, great pictures and thanks for letting us look! Forgot to tell you weeks ago how much I enjoyed your info and pics on Little Bohemia. Pretty cool!

An FYI to anyone up north, I read the Lakeland Times newspapaer and Little Bo is having a Mother's Day buffet. Might be something to check out.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No problem I love photography...even tho i have no clue what I am doing:)
The Cohen Bros. did Big Lebowski, Fargo, Lady Killers, O Brother where Art Thou..etc etc.

From Hell was done by the Huges Brothers.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Shakenbsis - No, looks like that was the Hughes brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks Ty, debsmad!

I didn't realize they did 'O Brother...' I loved that!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love love Fargo...

I don't know what Oshkosh did with the awnings, our downtown is back to looking like crap again. I hope Columbus has better luck.

    The Poser house is beautiful!

I know it is only Tuesday, but is there a Kurth gathering on Friday?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I met Channing Tatum (Pretty Boy Floyd) when he flew in to Madison late Monday night. He was scheduled to fly out Tuesday night. They must be filming somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey Rod - must not have scrolled all the way down before. Love the Poser House shot. I drove by there on Fri nite, but all lights were out and couldn't see a thing.

    THANKS!

    ReplyDelete
  55. It would be nice if you could keep it the way the movie had it but thats not the movie companies job. So can not be to mad!:)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Lotus! love the new g-baby pic!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not mad, disappointed because they said they would donate all the stuff.

A lot of it people did not want - it was cheap and would deteriorate within a month so it's not a big deal really.

Columbus is trying to make the NO BACKLIGHT sign zone farther out.

On a side note - anyone with Bale or other photos that they think would be nice to post - send them on in.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great pics today! The poser house is beautiful! I've been reading these posts everyday, and would so like to meet you all. You guys are so much fun, and I don't even know you. It's great the PE can bring so many people together! I have been to Columbus 3 times in the past couple of weeks, and have missed fimling every single time, but that's ok. I love the old buildings, and the people of Columbus. I am going to try to come up next week if they film. Have a great day all!

  59. hey Vicky,

    ReplyDelete
  63. shakenbsis, thanks! I like to switch the pictures around. Mainly because G-ma is stuck on her!

So are the red flowers out? Yes/No? I think we should print out our own picture of Rod's bobble head doll, cut it out, and then pin it to our shirts! That would get their IMDb goats! :0 Cbus vs. IMDb, Rumble in Columbus! We could do a musical version; singing & dancing fight scenes! :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. the Jets and the Sharks...lordy.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey Lotus, sorry I probably shouldn't be stirring the pot, but I couldn't resist. (Yeah, I'm still gonna look for a red flower!)

but... a cut out of Rod's bobblehead on a stick is very funny, we could wave them around!

    Sorry Rod, LOL

Osh! it will be great to FINALLY meet you = )

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yes, osh, I couldn't remember the names! (snap,snap,snap,sanp...) shakenbsis, Bobble Head Rod on a stick. Great idea! He is our LEADER, is he not?

    ReplyDelete

Can't wait to meet y'all finally on Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I too love the picture of the Poser house. I wasn't able to get a good picture when I was there to watch the filming due to all the equipment around the house. I wish I had thought to bring my camera down with me when I was visiting my mom at the Columbus hospital a couple of weeks ago.

Her doctor is Sam Poser and Rolf treated her at the hospital BTW. : )

  73. hey does anyone know what is going on with Milwaukee? have they filmed here already or is it postponed?

  74. A question.

Has Johnny D ever been in a pure comedy? I know many of his movies have had comediac(sp) overtones but any real laughers?

He really should try one if he has not. I think he has evolved enough.

I consider comedies MUCH harder then dramas!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't know of JD ever being in a comedy where it's actually labeled as such, but he had me rolling with laughter in Fear and Loathing!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. TMZ - is doing news on JD and PE filming...I only saw that end of it!! ugh!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I forgot about that one Christine!

Benny and Joon also has some great comedic stuff of a completely different nature but can't be considered a comedy either.

    ReplyDelete
  78. RE Coens: I was going to chime in and say that they've already filmed in Wisconsin-- Blood Simple-- but then I doublechecked and realized I was thinking of Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan. I was making a Simple mistake.

S'bsis: Rod's initial post of the day had a cool but moltophotoshopped pic of lightning and a pink tornado bearing down upon what looked like the RKO Studios logo. His caption said this was taken at Lost Lake, just north of Columbus, where yours truly posts from. All is well! Were it a true tornado warning, I wouldn't go to the basement; I'm the kind of dillweed that would run outside with a camera.

Driving through the country today, I must say I was looking down every farm road I passed for white trucks. Nope, none up here.

  87. Tornado - I was not sure of Lost lake had any oil rigs in it either.

I'm with "m" - tornado warning means press face against window.

Well - unless I deem it necessary to go into basement and cower.

Our dog hides in the bathtub. I'm sure he will spend the night there tonight at some point hyperventilating.

  89. What about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? I thought Johnny was pretty funny as Willy Wonka (in a quirky sort of way), even though that isn't necessarily a comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  90. debsmad-

We know Rory is out there :) He is just flying low under the radar :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Thanks for the Poser house pic, it puts the filming in perspective.

I would like to see some of the Madison pics too if someone has links to post. The JD Zone in all about Johnny and I'm invested in this film, not just his role in it.

The Little Bo pics were very very interesting. It's amazing how much of the film is getting out into the world. Since it will be an entire year between wrap and release, I guess MM and Co figure people will forget what they saw or won't be able to connect the dots.

FYI. Add Ed Wood and Don Juan De Marco to the comedy column for Johnny. I LOVE Ed Wood. You must watch it as a double feature with Plan 9 from Outer Space... you won't be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think Ed Wood would be the closest to a pure comedy.
