From Up Here

Good morning from Fish Creek.

Hope all is well down south. We woke up this morning to thunder and Blake can not understand how a human can build a house with no bath tub. Where is a poor dog to go and hide.

The weather has been pretty good for the most part. Mosquitoes are every where. I'm not sure I have ever been in Door when there have been those little varmints, I guess we are normally up here in the fall.

Our bike ride was a success. A short 25K but with both of us having colds for a month and bad weather we only trained for . . . .1 block. Last night a couple saw us and ask if we were on the ride. "How far did you go" they asked. Only 25K, " we went the 100K, testing my new knee that was replaced a month ago" the guy said. "Then afterward we took some kayaks out to test them" WELL LA DEE DAA!

We did have one little altercation on the ride :-)

DJ and I are riding side by side on an empty road. I'm pretty experienced with biking havign gone on five 500 mile week long ride in my life, so we were not a problem.

Then we hear. ON YOUR LEFT, meaning faster bikers are approaching on our left.

ZOOOM a recumbent build for two flashes past us. The guy the says "Taking up the whole God Damn Road". We are both surprised and mutter sorry, then I realize we were NOT taking up the whole God Damn road. I yell ASS HOLE!!

Not sure I have ever yelled ass hole to another biker (a few cars but no bikers).

I took pictures but this laptop has no photoshop and I don't want to upload 6 meg photos.

Lots of Lithuanians up here manning tables in restaurants. I'll have a photo of Donatas at some point - a pretty cool guy from Lithuania. They hire people from that area of the world every year. Seems to be a thing to do. It's something I have noticed is a lot of Gelato stands and I have heard many Italians. This is something new that has started in the last few years.

Right now they are explaining about toast to some waitress from Slovakia.

My parents purchased property in Baileys Harbor 40 years ago but sold it so I have been coming up here almost all my life. I have seen many changes but it's still the same old Door, a little busier an more trinket shops. Also I have seen prices rise in restaurants.

SO - today - some hiking in the woods perhaps.

That's it. Restaurant is filling up - better pack it up.

Cheers

Check out Jenny's blog - she is taking photos of every meal LOL.

  1. Glad you're enjoying your trip, and I hope it remains dry....water levels are rising here in Madison even though it's sunny today...
Lithuanians - when you bump into the next one, say, "labas" (hello). Did you know that Madison has been sister cities with Vilnius, the capitol of LT since 1989?- the website: www.madisonvilnius.org

...and watch out for those ruthless incumbents!

  3. Sounds like your having a GREAT time!!! Have some fun up there! Darn those bikers!!

I am going to re post something I wrote early this morning. Just in case Marcella didn't see it:

"MARCELLA- Are you here hun? I have a question for you....were you the person tht posted pics of the biograph theatre, and JD from Beaver Dam in the brown suit?

If not, does anyone know who did. I want to use them for something, not selling it, just for my blog."

Happy Father's Day everyone!! Off to the store for BBQ supplies!!

  6. No, not me. I have to work. The only night I can go down is Tuesday, and if they are still filming on Wednesday then I can be there for that during the day.

Does anyone know what days this week it is going on?

  8. Of course I'm here (I'm never THAT far...). I had the pictures from the biograph but not Beaver Dam. Your welcome to use them. If you want I can email them to you too. I have tons more of the building and such, there wasn't much else to see for a while.

    Happy fathers day everyone!

Rod sounds like you are having a great time (give or take a few bikers :) )

Becky- I'm hoping to make it down to Joliet tomarrow as well. It's not set in stone yet tho... I really don't know the specifics. I'm assuming it's at the old jail? And most likely a night scene (not that it matters I can't get down there until later anyways). Any ideas where basecamp might be? Ok I'm jumping ahead of myself here... Hope to see some of you guys down there!

  14. Omg -.- I'm so pissed. My friend is trying to tell me that Johnny Depp is just putting on an act for the cameras and that he's not really that great of a guy.....I keep telling him he just doesn't understand unless he's been there. Argh. So frustrating.

  15. Good evening, everbody!
Just here for a moment to say hi! I was away from my computer all weekend. I didn't want anyone to think I fell off the face of the earth. Hee Hee. I also updated my blog with some Lake Delton pics. Have a great week.

  18. Happy Father's Day to all dads!

Rod, my husband received a really nifty Oregon Scientific rain gauge (self-emptying, wireless remote)... humorously, we had chosen it as a gift weeks ago...

Hope the last part of your weekend was as lovely as the first. I haven't been to Door County in absolutely years; like many, its legend looms large in my childhood and youthful memories. I'd love to stay in one of those musty but charming cabins there used to be so many of... uncork a cherry wine, slather some smoked fish on a cracker... crank up the sea shanties... GOOD times!

  19. I've never had a bad meal up in Door County. I actually had the best Mexican food I've ever eaten up there too.

We go up each September for our anniversary. We were married outside Bailey's Harbor at Boynton Chapel.

  22. Osh,

Thanks for that article. JD is a genuine person. Most actors are unless you are the paparazzi with your flash bulb going off in their face.

  23. I heard M-W too... I can go every day... but not 'til I get off work which is about 2pm or 3pm.. it's about a 2 hour drive for me.... I am for SURE going tonight.. we'll see about the other nights, if I just get my pic with him and/or autograph I might be done... but I said that about Wed... "If I could just meet and hug him" he he... I guess I'm truly addicted now.. as long as they are here... I'm probably going to go. =) Only a few days of shooting left. If they are in Chicago this weekend.. I'm totally down to go!

  24. I went to the Dells on Fri. and came back late Sat. I really wanted to help with the cleanup but my boyfriend woudn't let me. I really know how all these people and businesses feel.

In 2000 they took out a dam that's by me and we lost all of our water and now it's just a little stream/creek. Our neighbors property touched the mill pond (ours didn't) and it was a really sad time here. And I could smell that every spring for years. Now when we went there it was a little different smell, but there was 1 spot that had the same smell.

Going from the Dells to Baraboo, taking pictures there and back to the Dells it took us something like 3 hours. I overheard a guy saying that it normally takes him 30 mintues to get home, but the other day it took him 3 hours. This past weekend they had a Harley ralley in the Dells which didn't help much either, bikers coouldn't drive anywhere because everything was closed. Even Wiscoinsin Dells Pkwy was backed up. At 1 point it looked like it started in Lake Delton and went all the way past Mt. Olympus Waterpark.

A couple of years before they took the dam out they closed all of the gates and water was coming up everwhere. When it was at the end of the side road we were getting really scared, a house that was 2 houses from us had water almost up to the house or it was to the house (I can't remember). Everyone was really scared. All TV stations were here and the person who lives on 1 end of the road had to help sandbag the house on the end (it was his daughters house), it was a mess all over.

Now they drew down the WI River here because I think they have to fix something on the dam and it's going to be closed all summer long. So we have no water on the WI River. I just thought that I would let everyone know that.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone with this post. If I get time I will send Rod some pics that I took in the Dells and Baraboo.
