Marcella Comes to Bat

Thanks to Marcella we have PE news!!

This was in the comments last night. Many people don't get around to "comments" so I'm reprinting this.

I was just in Joliet a few hours ago. There wasn't much at the Joliet Prison that we could see so we attempted to turn on the road (with all the security). As expected they asked us to turn around. However they allowed 3 or 4 trucks/cars out of the prison first. We followed them and ended up at what I believe was the Statesville prison. We continued acting like we knew where we were doing, and ended up on some set of a gas station. It was a very neat set (and we were definitely not supposed to be there). I attempted to inconspicuously snap some pics, and I will send Rod the best of them later.

After talking to Becky and hearing about the Lockport scene I'm thinking I may drive back there soon. Mapquest is saying it should only be 30 min.

Great photos Marcella - thanks - SOMEBODY cares!!! :-)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of stuff going on here today. Appliance dude is coming to see why our refrig is leaking AGAIN! And got an email from our builder saying he is RIPPING up our driveway and pouring a new one Monday. No cars for a week in the garage.

The top of the cement is chipping and there are cracks so he is taking a mulligan and redoing the driveway. I GUESS it's a good thing.
--------------------------------------
So I was looking up how Egg Harbor got it's name in Door County. I had visions of Spanish egg boats having a war with natives and egg throwing followed my a great egg feast.

But - sadly I found it was slightly different.

Egg Harbor was named by Mr. Increase Claflin. He named it Egg Harbor because in the process of retreiving a horse shoe out of the harbor, he found a nest full of duck's eggs. Once called Hat Island, and also once called Horseshoe Bay.

BLAH!!!!

There is a golf course just south of Egg Harbor called . . . . . . something that I can not remember this early in the morning (Check back). I played a round a few years ago and here is a nice little par three hole.

It's only about 180 yards long and pretty straight. What could be so hard???

Once my knees stopped shaking and I found a ball I could lose I took a mighty swing with a 7 wood and put the ball 4 feet from the green. Feeling pretty cocky I then chipped the ball 4 feet and three putted! DAMN!!!

That's it - busy day today!

  12. I'm about 99% sure I'll be heading down to Chicago again tonight.. proably leave here around 4pm and it will take about 2 2 1/2 hours to get there depending on traffic, Marcella if you go and get there before me please let me know how it is and if it's worth it, I'd hate to pay for parking and fill up with gas AGAIN, not to mention tolls for nothing. If there is something going on, I'm prepared to wait all night, I was yesterday too.

Are you J^P's manager? If so, he promised to give me his wallet and I was wondering if you could get him to autograph some skateboards and send them to me? I have 20 kids and some of my friends have kids.

Thanks in advance for fulfilling this request.

  22. Ummm....could you at least use one of my pirate pics for that fake profile please? And "Oh Mah Gawd!"....I would never wear that much lipstick with that much eyeliner.....that is insulting especially considering my wannabee facial hair in that pic! My mom taught me better than that...or was that daddy that taught me? I forget.....
Email me for the pirate pics ;)

  23. I once had a cracked driveway in TN. Engineer said it means the foundation has shifted and/or cracked. Sure enough, when it was time to sell the house, we noticed upstairs in the master bedroom, some nails had popped. It was less than the whatever #/something of an inch, so we just fixed the floor boards and continued on. House sold just fine.

  29. Great photos Marcella! Brings back some terrific memories of the PE shoot in Oshkosh. I had a blast the entire experience--from the downtown transformation right thru the shooting.

Haven't had time to get on lately. Flood clean up is taking up my life. I'm fortunate compared to many. Does any one have any FEMA experience or know what to expect from them? I've heard differing accounts on how it all works. One person tells me that whatever I may get from FEMA is considered a loan and has to be paid back; others tell me that what you get is considered a grant and does not have to be repaid. Since I have some insurance coverage (thank God for the sewer back up rider), I don't think I'll need all that much assistance from FEMA. Thanks to any one who has some info on the subject.

  30. Maybe you like this better?

  31. Where are all these JP's coming from ? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  32. Awww, that is cute, JP!

Kitty, with the flood in Aug 07 in Columbus, we had water in our basement and lost some stuff, nothing major (no water heater, furnace, or washer or dryer). Our roof leaked from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor and FEMA gave us $300, which wasn't a loan.

We got the money wired to our account in a day after they looked at our home. I thought they were very efficient.

I may not be able to do the Amtrak station on Saturday due, in part, to a baseball tourny in Lake Mills. I will find out more tonight. That may even mean forgoing a Kurth visit.

    Rachel, you're cracking me up!

  39. Hey! Someone stole our sandbags today while we were at work!

    ReplyDelete
  40. hey hey
I'm a manly man! Nothing adorable about me!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jenny, that is horrible that your sandbags were stolen!

So, Kurth's tomorrow night? I heard a rumor that Shakes is going to bring some of the goodies Tessa gave us from Ohio!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for the info Kathy. Nothing too major here as far as damage--at least compared to most folks. I lost the water heater, washer, dryer, extra fridge and a dehumidifier. Thankfully, the furnace survived. The bulk of the cost (at least from what I've been able to gather from others) will be in cleaning service. My understanding is the average is $2500 to $3000, depending of course on what has to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow Kitty, I didn't realize you had that much damage. I really hope our lovely city can come up with a flood/sewer plan that works soon.

In 2001 FEMA just gave me a check...it was to replace all the stuff in my basement...I was told to save all my receipts and about 6 months later FEMA sent me a letter asking for copies of the receipts so they knew what I spent the money on...I guess they were worried I was going to buy more cats or something.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ok Oshie, come clean...you did buy more cats, didn't you.

    ReplyDelete
  45. actually, I have never bought a cat in my life! They all were free!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks Marcella for the pics and update....PE withdrawal blues here.....

Heard on Madison radio today, that FEMA was opening an office in Columbus-not sure where-it was on 1670am-hope you get some relief from the flooding and the insurance companies too....I had to go to Jefferson today for work, man both the bridges there over the river are "toast" and the town was really empty...water everywhere...hope the response for y'all comes soon...best wishes and prayers to everyone

    ReplyDelete
  47. As I understand it the FEMA place in Columbus is at the High School.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks, Osh, for the info. I, too, would be tempted to buy cats. Nothing better than a snugly little pussycat.

Unfortunately, I am cat-less at the moment. My beloved Scooter (the pussy in the photo) passed on four years ago from kidney failure at the age of 17. She became known as the Miracle Cat. She became blind when both retina's became detached due to high blood pressure (something that comes along with kidney failure) and I was told by a specialist at the emergency hospital in Appleton that she would never see again. After about four weeks on some high blood pressure meds, her sight came back! I was also told on more than one occasion that the readings on her blood work were so off the charts that she should be dead. She stayed with me for almost two years after those incidents. And each night I got a good-night kiss from her before she went to sleep. That's what I miss the most.

That's my "My cat is like a member of the family" story. And with that I will leave you fine folks for this evening.

  49. Oh Kitty, I'm sorry about your kitty.

  50. I'm sorry about your kitty too. She sounds like she was a real sweetheart.

  51. Tonight I was thinking "Man, we haven't had any calls on our ground line for a long time..." I go over to the phone and find out there is no dial tone. The wiring must have gotten messed up in the flood or something. We use our cell phones for pretty much everything. So our ground line has been out for almost 2 weeks and we didn't even notice until now. DAR!

  52. I had two very special kitties that lived very long lives, too. They were brothers and when I got them they both fit in one of my hands. Loki lived 16 years and Patches lived 17. They both had such unique personalities. I was very blessed to have them for so long.

  53. Today at work I was reading comments on everybody's blogs, trying to catch up. I can't remember which blog it was, but there was some discussion about Body Worlds. It inspired me to write on my blog about my experience at the exhibit. If you read it you may find it very enlightening.

  55. It was great to hear from Left Hand Louie regarding his family. They hadn't posted in a while; it was a worry.

Beautiful moon photo j^p, mind if I ask where it is? What yonder lights flicker upon the distant shore? (Winnebago, Brothertown?)

Marcella, thanks for your great photos! I love the old gas station a LOT.

  59. j^p's pic reminds me of one of my favoritest views in WI... east shore of Winnebago, Hwy 151 north of Brothertown just as it veers eastward towards Chilton. There's a hill right there. And whether you are headed to Fond du Lac and see the view explode before you, or see it in your rearview mirror as you're gallivanting to Manitowoc... it's one of the most breathtaking sights anywhere.

    Plus, sturgeon.

  61. I've never dealt with FEMA, but I think they give both grants (do not have to pay back) and low interest rate loans. The grants only go up to $20,000+ which wouldn't TOUCH the amount of damage to the houses lost in the Lake Delton area.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Jenny,

your sandbags weren't "stolen" per se. I happened to be hanging in Columbus and E-biz had a stream of about 30 gentleman who reside in a correctional facility "take back" the sandbags from people in your neighborhood. So, I don't think they were stolen, I just think whomever gave them out had the inmates get them back.

    Hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thanks Rachel, we were wondering who took them because I read that we were supposed to put them on the curb and they were going to pick them up today.

    What does E-biz mean?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh Sorry... that is what we call Elizabeth. She lives a few houses down from you :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Mary - I don't see your order ???

Unless you are not name Mary!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I just learned that the sand bags have to be buried? They said that they are contaminated! Wonder where they bury them??
