HAPPY REPEAL DAY

Public Enemies Photo blog

On January 16th 1919, Congress passed the Volstead Act, outlawing alcohol and putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty. However, what actually happened was that Americas thirst fr alcohol actually increased along with organized crime. Respect for the law diminished and drunkenness, crime and resentment towards the federal government ran rampant.

WELL DONE!!!

By the early 1930s the law was getting old and the country was messed up and in 1932 Franklin Delano Roosevelt ran for President on a platform that included the repeal of Prohibition.

On this day Utah, the final state needed for a three quarters majority, ratified the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition and restoring the American right to a celebratory drink.

Wisconsin was the 2nd State in the country to ratify the constitution behind Michigan. Mississippi was the last dry State in America ending prohibition in 1966.

The only breweries that were able to survive prohibition were the mega macro breweries which were able to diversify. This essentially set back the beer industry until the 1970s, when the homebrew and craft beer movements were revived (thank you Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada Breweries - the first micro brews).

Here is a look of Grinders Island secret brewery

=======================

I was flipping around the tube last night and saw a 1930sh set. The movie was "Once Upon A Time In America". It was sort of an odd movie for the 15 minutes I watched it staring Robert De Niro. The show intrigued me so I went to see how link it was as it seemed near the need. HOLY CRIPE - I started at 9:30 (it was 10:00) and lasted until 2:00. The movie was 3 hours and 49 minutes.

The odd thing was that in America we saw a one hour and 30 minute movie. The director Sergio Leone (Spaghetti Western director) was force to shorten the movie AND rearrange it. You see the LONG version was full of flash backs and so forth. So what he did was take ALL the slash backs out and put all the scenes in chronological order.

In Russia the film was cut into two separate movies. One containing the child scenes and one with the adult scenes.

You can tell it's winter when Milo tries to hog all the warm air.

Next Friday is the Field trip to the Water Works. Afterword DJ and I are stopping at the Visitor Center for an art exhibit by Will Gillmore. Here is a very poor photo of a beautiful piece of art by Will. SO - you are all invited to stop by the Visitor Center on Friday 6:00 to 8:00 and hopefully we can make it after touring the Water Works and THEN The Kurth.

  4. I have the dvd for Once Upon a Time in America. Loved that movie. First saw it in 1985. DeNiro and Woods were excellent. You can borrow it if you want. Did you watch it on regular tv or hbo or something? It is long but wondering if it was because of commercials.

    Btw, Balderdash told me the new name for my IPA. I had to laugh.

  10. FYI...

    I'm looking for this attachment for a Kitchenaid stand mixer. It is for a Grain Mill. They are a bit pricey (been watching them on Ebay and Craig's list) If anyone has one they want to sell or sees one for sale somewhere, I am willing to go $40-50.
