Portellos and Cohan and Falcon sex caps

Well - I watched a good portion of the Cohen thing. You know, that interview where the GOP decided that since that cannot defend Trump they would get all huffy about Cohen and that he lies.

They never asked him any real questions but brought up his conviction for lying and why he is goign to a nice prison but they ALWAYS left out the sentences where that very same court said Trump was ALSO guilty along with Cohen.  They are fine with the President lying but NOT his fixer.

Again - showing their true colors. The only real person who had any balls to asked real questions and get real answer was Ocasio-Cortez. Cortez was the only person to actually ask questions that lead to answers, and listened to make new questions.  Everyone else was bloated with speeches explaining why they are asking a question in the first place.  Pretty much filling up their time with nonsense.

This was the opening round and I believe the whole Russia thing is going to be a side light to the REAL show.  This is all about money laundering, racketeering and tax fraud like a common la cosa nostra family and I firmly believe Trump and SOME of his family will be in prison when this is all finished and it won't be because of the Mueller investigation.

The Russian thing won't even be talked about that much.

One thing Cohan mentioned was he did not believe that IF, Trump loses the election there will NOT be a peaceful transfer of power.

But it seems all of Trumps groupies will blindly stand with him because they want someone that represents their values. A lying, egomaniac, wife cheater . . just like they are? (at least that is why they say voted for him).   Those are their values?

And don't get me started with the fake North Korea photo shoot with zero substance.  SURPRISE - nothing happened.

MEANWHILE -  Back in Columbus the deck augmentation is moving along - I'm thinking maybe done this weekend?   Cedar siding will go on the house on the inside of the enclosed deck.

We WANTED to put white trim around all the back windows. When talking about this on one of the many meetings they said - "how old is the siding" and we said 12 years. They said we COULD do it but the siding could be getting brittle and we MIGHT have to replace ALL the siding if they are too brittle. . . . . . well . . .we actually thought long and hard about this . . .  replace all the siding?  Different color? . but no.  Let's not get TOO outside our comfort zone.

I tell ya - one thing I learned on City Council was about contracts and change orders.

We have signed so many change orders (2 more yesterday) it's crazy. These guys want to get everything correct. NOT complaining.  We really appreciating the thoroughness.   I have been disappointed in all building processes from building the house to finishing the basement.  Work that is 95% good but always lacking in places you don't really notice until everyone is gone.  Micheal Simon builders are really impressing us.

*****************

Yesterday DJ and I went to Wisconsin Lighting for a ceiling fan for the enclosed part of the deck and on the way home stopped at Portello.

WELL - the place is MUCH MUCH larger then it looks.

We were not in a hot dog mood so DJ got the char grilled chicken sandwich and I got an Italian Beef with extra gravy.  Dry = is no gravy, Extra Gravy = a splash gravy on the sandwich and Dipped = they dip the entire sandwich in gravy.  The gravy is like poutine gravy, a light gravy.  EXCELLENT FOOD

Both were WONDERFUL and very filling - big food but not stupid big.  The burgers are 1/3 pound to give an example.  All their sandwiches are that "like" size.

French fries are nothing to get excited about but the onion rings looked pretty good.

It's a loud place and I counted 30+ people behind the glass making the food. Yea - it was busy but a normal Culvers style wait.  Not fast food but not a sit down dinner.

You walk in and go all the way to the far side, place an order in one of 4 lines and then like an Octopus car wash walk down and get your food on the other side of the building.

Going to try the burgers Sunday with Elweed.  He won't like the place, too loud but so far bang for buck a good deal on filling your tummy.

NO - NOT ANOTHER POLAR VORTEX? AAAAAGH

Friday DJ and I took a Coffee Brewing 101 class at JBC Roasters in Madison. Seriously fascinating, understanding exactly what coffee is doing when you add water.

When hot water  (195-205) hits the coffee grounds the outside walls give you that sour taste (acid) and as the water permeates the cells different GOOD flavors start to emerge until it hits for core where the darker chocolate and earthy flavors are. Spend too long and the tobacco dirt flavors are coming up.

This is why the size of your grind is so important.  If you have large rocks (like Folgers) your extraction of the GOOD coffee flavors will not have a chance.  Some people in the past would put egg shells in their coffee grounds.  The egg shells are alkaline and remove a lot of the acids for a smoother Folgers.

A better idea would be to grind finer.  But Folgers is ground for percolators which pretty much burn the coffee which make a nasty cup not AS nasty.

If you do grind your own coffee one way to get a perfect cup is called the Pareto Principle.

When you get a new bag of coffee brew it up and follow flow chart.  The trick is to keep extracting more and more until you go too far and back off just a tad.

Extract More = Grind finer AND/OR brew for a longer time AND/OR use more water.
Extract Less = Grind coarser AND/OR brew for a shorter time AND/OR use less water.

If you have a normal grinder 15 seconds is the normal grind time.  We have a Encore Barista with 40 settings and I'm normally on an 18 which is medium fine (table saltish).   French Drips I'll grind finer.

I'll have more tidbits in the future. So much to cover on other topics before I bore myself.

The Oscars - best one we have seen in a long time.  Either all the movies were good OR, the lack of a host was a brilliant idea.

There have been some years when all the moves sucked.  Remember when American Beauty won an Oscar?  That was a SUCK year.

This year DJ and I were rooting for Bohemian Rhapsody and The Green Book.  DJ loved Roma (I did not see it) and I was not a fan of Black Panther.  A good many movies we WANT to see but are waiting for the DVDs.

Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper were amazing in their duet and stunned the world.

https://youtu.be/G0CI8pF2ZGw

The Queen performance with Adam Lambert was . . blah blah . . .you really can't compete with Freddie.  I like Adam but he is no Freddie Mercury

What many people did NOT see was what happened AFTER Rami Malik TRIED to leave the stage.  He fell and paramedics were called in but all seemed to go OK.  I am SO glad he won best Actor.  An amazing performance in BR.

 *****************

As some of you might know I've been in the middle of a baseball draft and as I was geeking out over getting Mike Trout I read an article about how him and his wife were storm chasing in Arizona.  WHAT? Storm chasing?

YEA - it seems Trout is a weather fanatic with his own personal weather station and plans on a weather career after his is done playing baseball in 15 years.

My 2nd round pick up was Mike Leake who is is an average pitcher that just goes out every 5th day and puts in 6 or 7 innings year in year out.  A freaking work horse.  I am assuming I will have the best offense and best defense in the league. I'm hoping to get by with an average pitching staff.

And this morning I made my last real Free Agent pick up with Adrian Beltre.  This was a brilliant move.  The guy is 40 years old and fills my need for 3B for 1 year.  The trick is when you sign an over priced Free Agent you MUST sign him for 2 years. WAY WAY too expensive for 2 years - EXCEPT he retired.  THUS - I can drop him after 1 year and not pay him that last year.  Perfect.

Now I'll just pass for 3 or 4 rounds until prices come down and I have enough salary cap left for 1 more cheap Free Agent if there is anything worth it.

In this league we have a $350 salary cap.  Trout was $42.  in the rookie draft the first round players are $10 and go down $1 each round.  I spent 42 on Trout, $43 on Leake and $34 on Beltre. I get Yelice $30 for 3 more years but lose Freddie Freeman $30 and d'Arnuad (bust)$32 to free up money for next year.

Then next weekend the rookie draft starts which will last a few weeks.  One round a day and I need 20 players mostly pitchers now and a full time catcher.

I have ZERO catchers on my team (d'Arnuad sigh).  Both of my catchers were injured for the year IN THE FIRST WEEK LAST YEAR.  One was an over priced Free Agent and because he got 15 at bats I still have to pay him. The other was in his last year of his contract and I dumped him to be a free Agent.

******************

I went to the Columbus Area Historical Society soup/chili function and it was pretty crowded.  Great event - wish I could have stayed longer.

**************

Winter has been going on since the first week of November and I am tired of it.  BUT - here comes another so called polar vortex.

Expect snow showers all week starting tomorrow 2-6 inches between Tuesday and Friday and then don't expect temps to get to 15 for a week with double digit below and wind chills in the -20 range for lows and below zero wind chills for highs.

*****************

MEANWHILE they continue to build our deck..  They poured footings this morning and it seems our old deck was not up to code footing (we have found a few things not up to code in the last year).

I tell ya - We have signed more change orders in the last 2 weeks then the entire basement finishing project (zero).   Michael Simon are REALLY professionals and no wonder they have not had a law suit against them in over 120 years or some big number (not DON Simon this is Micheal Simon - completely different).

The basement was a 95% success.  Some things were missed and some things we WISH they would have done differently. Simon?  WOW . . talk about a company that does everything right.  Weekly updates, time estimates, MANY change orders.

They are fitting this project in between a few big ones.   Drexil lumber and I asked the truck driver about working for Drexil.  He LOVES them.   Good year round pay and and a company that cares about their workers. What a great company that came to Columbus.

Nuff said for now - I need a hair cut.

IDs for a lighter? Brewers and Rain chains

The final piece of the pre season baseball puzzle arrived yesterday in the form of the 2019 Baseball Prospectus.  It's especially nice since a coworker and former baseball combatant writes for the book.  This and the 2019 Bill James Handbook are invaluable.

BUT THIS YEAR  . . . .

Typically I read the Brewer write up which has nothing really to do with the Brewers but a commentary on baseball or small market teams in general and so forth.  All of a sudden there is something to write about in Milwaukee.

How can a team that plays for the #1 smallest market in baseball, with one of the smallest payrolls in MLB be so good with such a band of cast offs.  How did they get this group of players that other teams did not want NOT because they are bad . . . but because they were just "extra".    AND, they keep doing it.

Aguilar hit 30 HRs in the minors for Cleveland but had nowhere to play.  BAM - Brewers picked him up cheap.  Shaw - had a very good year for Boston but they had someone BETTER - BAM - Brewers picked him up.

Cain and Yelich were an amazing pickup NOT just because they were good but because the Brewers have TWO center fielders they could keep Santana, a corner guy, instead of Broxton (CF) who would have been needed if the Crew only had one CF.

Like most sports, it's not the starters that win games, it's who replaces the starter when he gets injured.

And the pitching where the Brewers found gold by finding pitchers using the wrong pitches to try to get opponents out.

For the last 10 years fast ball use has been declining as more and more batters are "sitting" on a fast ball.   Why not find pitchers that use the fastball too much but have a great 2nd pitch. Then make them throw that 2nd pitch MORE.     Chacin doubled how many times he throws his amazing slider (one of the best in MLB)   Miley last year threw his cutter more then half the time with GREAT results.

The Brewers are finding important trends and under appreciated players and exploiting them.  As the author said - If MoneyBall had never been written decades ago and someone wrote it now - Replace Oakland with Milwaukee and there ya go.

On a side note - The write up about Mike Trout.  geez.   What BP does is take ALL the stats from ALL baseball players of all time and compares every player by age and his stat lines to see what player is comparable at his age.

Trout's most comparable players are,  Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle and Frank Thomas (4th is Willie Mays and 5th is Mel Ott).  If baseball cards were still a thing I would collect every one of his cards.

And Trout is younger then 15 rookies that had over 100 ABs last year.  At age 26 he already has 240 career home runs and a career BA of .307, a career OB of .416 and a career SLG of .573.

Being in the AL on the west coast we don't hear a lot about Trout.  But really should.

BEEF of the Day -

SO - it all started with the Chiropractor.  I've had a back issue which I was taking care of a little with ice and so forth.  But when a intestinal issue started up I knew from experience this was being caused because of my back pain issue (injury 2 years ago on March 17th.  YUP - everything is connected and when my 4th vertebra is inflamed - I have . . . issues.

So I go there and have to get all my cards out including my new Medicare card (Medicare is so awesome).  I get all my cards and stuff them back into the wallet willy nilly (not "billfold" as anybody under 40 has never heard of that word it seems).  Not a big deal right?

So I stop at PicNSave on the way home and all is going well.   I get in line with like 5 things and a woman is writing a check and taking FOREVER as the cashier  is searching 50 coupons for a certain one and the woman is filing out all the things in the registry with perfect handwriting.  Not a big deal but it's taking a ling time.

Then the elderly woman ahead of me, perhaps 85ish? is getting checked and all of a sudden  HOLD UP.  We need to see an ID for the wine.  OK OK.  it's stupid checking an 85 year old but I know it's a thing.

I wait patiently as the elderly woman is searching through her very large purse for an ID and finally she finds it and with a shaking hand hands it over.  It's been about 10 minutes now  . . or feels like it.

MY TURN - I have 5 things and we needed some lighters for candles and I get a little pack and toss them in.

HOLD ON - "We need to have an ID for you to buy BIC lighters" . . . . . . . .

I stumble out of my daydreams and multi tasking and say . . ."what"?

"We need to have an ID for you to buy BIC lighters"

" Why do you need an ID for BIC Lighters?"

"Because a child could buy one and light a house on fire".

"So you need MY ID to by a lighter?"

"Yes we do"

I feel my entire body starting to convulse and as my brain is telling me to be calm be calm now is not the time I grit my teeth and being politically correct I reach for by wallet and my ID which is NOT in it's normal place.  At this point I'm not even sure what I'm looking for as I'm a little dizzy, am I tipping someone?  Would $5 do it?  no no wait what am I doing?

I think all the blood has now rushed from my head because I am holding my tongue from saying ANYTHING. Yet - I'm pretty sure my body language is SCREAMING. The guy behind me is backing up a little and chuckles moving to a different line.

WHAT THE F*CK!  my brain is screaming at me. A FREAKING LIGHTER?  TRUMP IS RIGHT?

I need a picture ID to do grocery shopping?  Is there a freaking list of things I need an ID for?  Can I buy gas for my car now without an ID?  GAS BURNS THINGS YOU KNOW!

I've been at other PnS and I don't need an ID.  I can buy booze without an ID.  Is this is corporate bull shit covering their ass for insurance companies?  What is the age I can buy a lighter without an ID?  Maybe I'm too OLD to buy a lighter?  Is that it?

sigh!

**********************

The deconstruction of the deck has started.  Sort of sad. When we were building the house DJ the builder and I were standing on top of a rise on the golf course discussing the house and we decided we wanted another 10x10 deck built on the back of the house.

Now it's coming off (not the knee cap) for a newer grander half screened in deck with sides and ceder roof and a roof line that will match the houses roof line.

The original plans had two downspouts going into the yard which would have looked like crap so DJ and I decided to spend some bucks for rain chains instead of down spouts.

Something like this

https://youtu.be/-wEnTY5VeNg

We're on a hill so the water will flow away from the house naturally but we will have a pretty cool basin on the ground meant for butterfly and birds.

So much better then 2 white pipes.

They dug the holes for 2 new footings Tuesday.  Should take about a month they figured

The decade the music died

I believe last year I posted some numbers in baseball where you could leave the game because of the scores and be 95% sure of the outcome.  I WISH I could find those numbers.  Anyone  anyone?

1 hour later - FOUND I

****************

MAN last night was loud.  I don't know WHAT it was but the so called frost quakes were rockin the house BAD last night!  I got up once to look out the windows and walked around the house and DJ got up once also.

We cleared all the snow and ice off the deck as construction starts today. Maybe that was it?  All I know is I was JOLTED awake 5 times with HUGE BANGs.  Yet  Gus?   zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

*****************

Correction.  If you read yesterdays blog before noonish you will notice I made a comment about a Queen song and called it "Lady Gaga".  I BRAIN said Radio GaGa but my fingers typed "Lady GaGa" and that song is LOCKED IN MY BRAIN!!!

++++

The Live Aid concert was pretty much a bust actually.  Frank Zappa was correct when he turned down the invitation to play stating the money would never get to the people and in fact most of the money raised was used to buy weapons from Russia.

Most of the bands that played said it was one of the worst experiences ever.  Led Zepplin banned their performance from ever being published on a DVD.

In Philadelphia where 100,000 people attended their concert the live transmission to the UK was FUBR as the audio was sent vie the transatlantic cable while the video was sent via satellite so the two never ever synchronized.  Back then very very very few people had a TV that was stereo.

So I have been thinking alot about Queen and music in general and where the heck was I when Queen was big.  I mean it's MUSIC!  I grew up on music, I have been surrounded with music all my life.  I have friends in very very high places in music.

One friends (Michael Marquart) wife sat next to Yoko Ono in the front row at the Grammy's'.  He was the drummer in our rock band Wonderhorse.   Another friend is a conductor in Green Bay (I think) and I just found out last night that a friend that was in our high school orchestra with me just composed the score for Martin Scorsese’s latest film, “Silence.”

Kim Kluge!!    WHO KNEW!!!!

I grew up in a band . . .well . . an accordion band LOL

SO - where was I in the 80s?

I was broke living in peoples basements and sort of a vagabond with no real home and thus . . no permanent stereo to listen to music in the 80s.  I have always felt the 80s were a dead spot in music for me.

My van in high school had a kick ass sound system but when that died I went to a Dodge Dart and did not put a sound system in the car.  THUS - no music. ALTHOUGH - I did have a CB radio LOL  I handle was Supertramp.

Just thinking out loud.  Poor people (or more politically correct - people with restricted incomes)  do not have access to good music.  hmmmmm  never thought of that.

Anyway - that was what has been on my mind.  I seemed to have missed most big hair bands as I really did not appreciate that genre'.  I was going to school and working full time in the 80s and living on student loans and had no real life.    ahhhh the good ol' days

*********

So while I have been trying  to type this I've had to deal with Gus barking at the construction workers, talking to LG about a refrigerator issue (no ice in the top ice maker which makes us have to LEAN OVER to get an ice cube (a first world problem)) and making more coffee (Ethiopian whic his REALLY fruity).

My brain is in 4 different areas doing all with less then 100% vigor.

Payless shoes is closing 2,100 stores - THANKS A LOT Colin Keapernick, where am I suppose to buy my Nikes so I can burn them NOW!   I guess that little trick did not work!

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is being cut by 50%.  Thanks a lot GOP. Just when all of the latent cancers are showing up they decided NOW lets cut the funds . . since america is doing so GREAT?  The economy is fantastic?  Let's cut funds that help September 11th Victim's?

Anybody ever notice that the GOP is not working for Americans but for corporations?   Remember Amazon?  The pay 0% income taxes are are getting a 100 million refund from the government because of the tax break for the rich and large corporations.

OK OK - too many things happening - I gotta run!

We watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night.

We watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night.

I've never been one to BUY a DVD.  I'm not a book collector. I read a book and give it away, it's not like I'm ever going to read a book TWICE (unless it's a manual).  I don't think I have ever done that.  Same with movies . . .  normally.

HOWEVER, now with Ultra HDR/Dolby Atmos capability I have found myself actually BUYING certain movies (and will probability sell most on ebay later).

iTonya still has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, songs AND quality and  I purchased Bohemian Rhapsody last week.  The great thing about DVDs is you get all the extras that tell you how a movie was made.  THAT is teh bonus of DVDs.

WELL - We watched Bohemian Rhapsody and I was never a BIG fan of Queen to be truthful.  Just not my thing back in the day. I was a harder rocker and disliked most big hair bands but I did have a Queen 8-Track in my hippie van (shag carpeting, Keystone wheels, great stereo,  I could rent it out on weekends, it seemed to be a notell motel on wheels in high school and we had it parked front and center at the 3rd Mifflin Street Block Party, it was a thing, the van had it's own following LOL!).  But I digress (don't get me started on the Truck-In in Indianapolis . . . .because I literally do not remember anything from those 4 days).

ANYWHO!

What a fantastic movie!  a MUST MUST see.

What you do not see in the theaters was the entire Live Aid MOVIE concert performance which was recreated EXACTLY.  The same exact stage was used with the same lighting and a exact replica back stage.

For anybody that took part in Public Enemies you know who exact/anal movie companies are. Remember in Columbus entire blocks were transformed that would never be used.   "Restaurants" a block away NOT in the film had real orders hanging from the wires over the grills.  So when the actors were commenting about how amazing the set was . . . I believe them.  But here was the weird kicker

They filmed the concert as the VERY FIRST thing they filmed and it was "one take".  If  something happened at the 18 minute mark.  Stop!  and start completely over.

I've now watched 2 specials on Queen and as has been mentioned numerous times.  Their Live Aid concert is ranked as the #1 greatest rock performance of all time. One interviewer said that when their 2nd song started, Radio GaGa (the song) EVERYBODY said "they just stole the show" and most of the other bands were a little pissed.  One BILLION people around the world sang a song at the very same time.  THAT is something very spacial.

it was Freddie's last live performance.

 https://youtu.be/mP0VHJYFOAU

***************************

Meanwhile - Snow - Columbus did not get as much as you think.   About 4.6 inches.  Seems like more because of drifting.

More on the way - 1-3 inches for sure Wednesday and the weekend is looking hideous.  Rain freezing rain turning to snow on Sunday.   The war between winter and summer has started.  It's actually a GOOD thing.  You do NOT want to see stagnation in anyway at this time of year.

Lot's of sun when it's not raining OR snowing.

**************************

I got a new tooth Friday morning.  On they way home I stopped at Woodmans to pick up some Gin (is this the winter of gin?) and the guy said "have a nice day" and I said  how can I NOT have a nice day  "I got a new tooth and plenty of booze".

The guy said it sounds like a title for a Country song.

*****************************

Friday DJ and I have a Brewing 101 (Coffee) roasting class at JBC Brewing.  I'm just their to drink coffee and see what it takes to roast real coffee.  I don't WANT to "roast". The last thing I need is another hobby that costs money.

Plus my Free Agent draft starts Friday but since I have the #1 pick (Trout) "Day one" is already done for me!

I'm HOPING I can pick up Molina as my 2nd round pick and probably last free agent pick up for the year. If I can - holy crap will I have an amazing defense. Basically ALMOST Gold Gloves at

Catcher - Yadiar Molina?
First Base - Freddie Freeman
Second Base - Ian Kinsler
Short Stop - Freddie Galvis
Center Field - Mike Trout
Left Field - Christian Yelich

I have NOBODY at 3B and a REAL average pitching staff - HOWEVER - the reason I REALLY want Molina is he will keep guys on first base and by doing that I will have MANY more double plays. I need the other team to STOP at 1st base.  So while my pitchers might be pretty average my defense is AMAZING which will really help them.

This is my 3rd year with the team.  I took them over after their manager quit with a 69 win season.  My first year I won 96 games and lost in the playoffs.  Last year I was a surprised and won 95 games and did not even make the playoffs WHICH, being the best team to NOT make the play offs I get the #1 Free agent pick.

This being the leagues 8th year and you can only keep one player a MAX of 7 years.  taa daa!

OK - Amazon made 11 BILLION last year and do not have to pay ANY Fed Taxes??  Seriously?  in fact the Feds are refunding then over $100 million?

Medicare and snow and so forth!

I would like to thank Clark for making me feel old with his you tube link!  Before it loads it asks  WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL  click on the appropriate answer.

F U  it did not go down that far. LOL  I guess if you are now on Medicare** don't know how to use you tube.

But yea - I saw that one but it was not from the Grammy's.  Good song though anyway from Austin City Limits

So I'm drinking the last of my Mad Dog Vagabond coffee and gotta share.  I ordered a Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer as my last 1/3 of cup was always getting a little cool and I would gulp it down frantically.

Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer for Office/Home Use, MWBLKPDQ-RB

It was $10.99 and DJ as not impressed . . . . until she tried it (I purchased 2).  It's GREAT.   Who knew this would be such an awesome thing.  6000+ reviews with over 70% 4+ stars.

Bang for buck totally worth it.  Hot coffee is so much better then tepid coffee.  Long 6 foot cord.

In other news - NOT bragging (as I typically do) but I donated a couple images for The Club House auction/function for after school  . .stuff  or something.  BAM - $600.  Makes me happy.

SNOW - about 8.5 inches in Columbus, a little more then "I" expected.  Think how much snow we would have on the ground if we didn't have the big melt.

HOWEVER - I believe we are now up to average on the amount of snow.  About 50 inches? now?  Remember back in 2007/8 we had over 100 inches.

That storm that was suppose to hit us Thursday and Friday will organize AFTER get scoots past Wisconsin.  Maybe some drops of rain on Thursday.

Next snow could be Sunday with 1-3 inches and then next Friday with 1-3 but in between sun and colder temps.

Anybody getting personal ad's on Facebook for books?  I got one and actually got the book and finished last night.  It's part of a 9 book saga. #1 was called Defragmenting Daniel :The Organ Scrubber.

YIKES.  It's exactly what it sounds like. Poor people  (Gutters) in an alternate reality are used pretty much as cows for rich people (Bubblers) for organs, rawhide and all sorts of entertainment like gore bars called Amputating Amy.  Which again - is exactly what it sounds like.

But it's not a "gore" book at all.  Daniel is looking for 7 parts of his body that were taken (replaced with mechanical parts) and is killing Bubblers and taking his parts back with the help of a psycho robot and being chased by the Bubbler PD.

The three stars, the Bubbler detective (an awesome woman turned male)  the psycho robot Margaret and Daniel the killer organ stealer are all really fun.

In book one he got his cornea and a knee back.  Now I have to decide if I want to read the rest.  Not sure.

In golf Jack Nickelson  NO  Phil Mickelson won the Pro/Am much to my sadness as his little outfit is SO boring.

When Elweed made the comment about if I ever changed my "outfit" in TGCTours I said no - never thought of it.  WELL - last week I dressed like Rickie Fowler.   and now he calls asking if I dressed my little dolly.

This week it is Phil.  BORING

But LOOK at the size of my hands!!!  YEA BABY!!

My NBA total system is hitting a tiny bit over 58% with 160 picks but I have questions.

Why is it books have a nickel lines for the NBA but dime lines for all other sports.

For instance - NORMALLY when you place a $10 bet and you win you will win $9.09 (plus your 10 back).  But in the NBA if you place a $10 bet you win $9.52 and FOR ME winning $9.70 with a -103 line is not uncommon.

Does this mean they want more people to bet the NBA?  It's harder so they make winning easier?  Or do they have so many gamblers they don't need a dime line?    hmmmmmmm

Pitchers and Catchers report tomorrow for the Brewers and all other players report Tuesday - SPRING IS NEAR!!

In a study - 95% of problem gamblers play the state lotteries.  Not all people that PLAY the lotteries are problem gamblers but 95% OF the problem gamblers play them.  I don't unless it's over 500 million . . .I mean  anything less then that is just wasting money right?  ya gotta draw the line somewhere.

Shorewood, Wisconsin trustees are considering lowering the fine for marijuana possession to $1.

The current fine is $250   I think it's $100 in Columbus isn't it?

** Medicare - I had to use my Medicare card for the first time yesterday.  SWEET.  I love socialism - it's not a bad word at all.

Instead of paying $20 for my Lovastatin - IT'S FREE now.   WHOO HOO!

Grammy Magic and STORM

We watched the Grammy's last night which is always a crap shoot.  What will it be THIS time.  All rap?  100% Country?  where is Five Finger Death Punch?

Most of the time I'm disappointed because I really do not listen to this genre' of music. Rock and or classical music for me.  But it's always nice to see the other side of the coin and there were three performances that BLEW ME AWAY!

Of course trying to FIND the videos is not going well.

First (in no order) were Chloe x Halle (not a clue who they are).  blah blah blah not really listening
and then they pulled me in with their SPOT ON PERFECT unison rendition of a song I'm not really in love with but "Where Is the Love" which for a death metal kind of guy is not really on my radar.

BUT

OMG can those to sing. I do not believe I have ever hear two people sing in unison so perfectly.  Amazing.

But the first performance this "Grammy's for Woman",  Brandi Carlile.  WOW!   She just smacked me across my face and I stopped EVERYTHING I was working on and she had my whole attention.

I'm not a Country Music fan but HOLY CRAP she was amazing!  Whenever I can find the videos from the Grammy's (owned by CBS) I'll post them as I thought that was the #1 BEST performance of the night.  What a set of lungs!

And of course near the end of the night was St. Vincent and Dua Lipa with the steamiest performance of the night.  They had a double appeal with an awesome song and ROCKIN guitar and . . . . . .

As for male singers . . . . were their any?   I don't recall.

I WISH I could find audio of TV performances. For instance on Austin City Limits Nine Inch Nails performed and it was fantastic - I WANT that performance . . . . yet . . there is nowhere to purchase it.

STORM STORM STORM #1 is coming.  Looking at 6-11 inches of snow Tuesday - My gut feeling is near 7 inches but it will be hard to measure with blowing snow and drifting.  I doubt there will be school tomorrow AGAIN.

The good news is Thursday and Friday is only looking at 2-6 inches now but let's get past this one first.  It calms down after Friday and we have a sunny but cold week NEXT week.

There was a poll or 110 Mayors from large cities,

85% said throwing money at business to get them to come to their city was a good thing.
44% said it was unpopular with the residents BUT good for the city
40% said it was popular with the residents and good for the city
14% said unpopular AND bad for the city
2% said popular and bad.

HOWEVER - MOST agreed with his statement

"other cities tend to offer too many tax breaks and other incentives to companies in pursuit of economic development."

I think it is stupid to offer $$ in tax breaks (ShopKo?  FoxxCon?) to risk bringing a company into a town.  Who is to say if they will stay and flourish with a vague promise of jobs?  PAYGO TIFS are OK as long as there is no risk to the city.

There are better ways.  If you have residents that are happy the business will come organically (with some nudging).

In St Mary Newfoundland, Canada, a tiny town of 400.  A fish sauce plant open in 1990 and then closed 17 years ago leaving 150 vats of rotting fish sauce.  SEVENTEEN YEARS.

The stink is so bad even rodents will not go near it as they know what TOXIC means.  It will cost $700,000 to get rid of it.

Right now Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar could be the #1 candidate to win the Democratic nomination.  You heard it here almost first.

As for Liz Warren and her Indian thing.  TOTALLY understandable. I thought I was an American Indian for 63 years of my life until I got my DNA checked.  sigh   Just a mutt like everybody else. My dad was adopted as an infant by a 100% Indian family.

According to ELO (Nate Silvers prognostication thing) there are 2 teams with a +37% chance of making into the finals in the NBA to lose to Golden State.  The Milwaukee Bucks and The Toronto Raptors.

A guy on Bovada won over $1000 on a $2 bet in the Super Bowl.   he bet there were be no touchdowns in the first half AND Tom Brady would throw an interception on his first pass.  But before you say how lucky he was remember that I bet in his life he has had more then 500 other stupid bets that he lost.

Even a blind monkey can make stupid bets and win sometimes.

GREAT Bucks trade - WE'RE #! SOM Opening day

Thousands of baseball fans are making the annual pilgrimage from across the country to Glen Head NY for OPENING DAY.  The day Strat-o-Matic begins sales of this years baseball cards.

Lines start early in the morning with television crews broadcasting and live streams.

One kid had a dream to invent a table top baseball game that INCLUDED a pitcher. All games at the time only used batters stats, never pitcher stats.  The young kid invented a game using dice and for years tried to market it.

His dad wanted him to be an insurance salesman but the kid took out a $500 loan from his dad and on his very very last attempt before he gave up the dream he put a 1 inch ad in The Sporting News saying he would send free cards to anyone that purchased the trial version.

Fifty seven years later the game is in the Hall of Fame and most say it was the very first fantasy sports game and the very first attempt at analytics in baseball.

Iv'e never made the trip to Glen Head but have stayed home from school AND work waiting for the mail to arrive (next Tuesday).  When I was an alderman the cards always came on a meeting day.

It's a big deal!  I played my first SOM game in 1967.  I will guarantee that anybody that plays SOM knows more about individual players then the average fan.  Things that are missed in a normal stat line.  Many sportscasters have played the game and most MLB managers will admit they are better managing because of SOM.

SOM really did have a major influence on my life.  I used a slide ruler for batting averages (still have my bamboo slip stick) until my dad spent $75 on a calculator that had all four functions.  Since I was dyslectic with words but not numbers I was deep into numbers and this was my way of satisfying my craving for all things numeric.

But I digress.

So Gus and I are playing with a ball. I throw it down the stairs and he chases it.  GREAT FUN and I can just sit on my butt.

He gets a squeaky rubber chicken and is playing with it. I grab and and toss it down the stairs.

" BUT!  Why, why did you do that daddy. Have I done something wrong? "

I think he is going to cry LOL

I go fetch it but am a buzz kill I guess. Play time is over.

SNOW - watch out next week.  Combined we're looking at somewhere between 5 and 11 inches of snow early next week.  Normal February temps. Snow Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday!

YIPPEE!

Hope everyone enjoyed the #frostquakes last night. Gus was barking randomly all night and a few shook the house.  One this morning was especially loud.

Water seeps into the ground and with the quick freeze it expands and creates a mini earthquake.

The Milwaukee Bucks made a big trade that many experts now believe they are the #1 team in the East.

Bucks acquire Nikola Mirotic from Pelicans as part of 3-team trade

another sharp shooting 3-pointer big man.  Only one team in the NBA shoots more 3-pointers then the Bucks,  Houston.   They took lots of spare parts and 4 second round picks and got the perfect player to compliment the team.

Of course Golden State has already won the Championship in a a couple months but at least we can dream.

SO - there was a study about mixing alcohol (I was not involved) and if you got a bigger hangover when you mixed different booze.  Beer and then wine and so forth, you get the idea.  The answer?  NO - it's a myth.  Its the amount of booze you put in your system. Not the KIND of booze.

There are twice the number of gun stores compared to McDonalds AND Starbucks combined. There is ZERO minimum security needed to operate a gun store. There are only four states that require ANY kind of security and in the last 4 years 32,000 guns have been stolen from gun stores.

Thank you NRA for making sure America is NOT safe.

Former Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) (Ronald Reagans speech writer) tweeted - A HEMP-BASED CONCRETE BORDER WALL a win for USA security & taxpayers, farmers, veterans; environmentalists. Bold thinking! It’s affordable & will work.

ummmmmm OK.  I can see that happening LOL

The Colorado House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill adding autism spectrum disorders as medical cannabis qualifying conditions.

The Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill to increase the amount of marijuana possession that constitutes a misdemeanor from one ounce to two ounces.

JIMMY THE STICK Year 24 is MIA

My note to NOAA - "How do you measure this 7 layer cake of falling crap out of the sky. Snow pellets, graupel, snow, rain, freezing rain, rain, sleet and anything else that falls from the sky"!

I reported 0.04 inches of precip last night.

Weather - GO HOME if you are not there already. It's not going to get better, it will get MUCH worse. Expect 1/4 inch of ice UNDER 2 inches of snow!   SWEET JESUS! HIDE YOUR CHILDREN

Meanwhile - on The Orville, Fox's lookalike Star Trk-sh series  It's turned into a porno series LOL

First Dr. Claire Finn has sex with a green alien blob that is like silly putty thanks to Rob Lowe and his out of control alien sexual pheromones.

Then Bortus is addicted to live action porno in the "Simulator" (also called the STIMULATOR) where you can simulate or HAVE real sex (something I thought about with the HaloDeck in Star Trek: Next Generation).

And the last episode, AGAIN, Dr. Finn  falls in love AND has sex with Isaac the Robot . .thing. Machine sex!

I have to admit it was one of the funniest episodes and highest rated on IMDB!

The thing about The Orville is that it takes a pretty common plot-line and you think you know where it is headed . . . . and then it goes off track in a totally different direction and has a message, not unlike the original Star Trek.

Great fun show.

DJ and I were talking about retirement, weekends and holidays last night.  First of all when you retire holidays become more of a nuisance and you forget when they are.  Weekends?

Lets see.  Let's run through the days.

Monday is the day we celebrate we made it through the weekend but let's have a beer as it's a long week ahead.

Tuesday is pay the piper day as we are INTO the week now and we better get things done.

Wednesday is hump day and we made it through the rough week and it's almost Thursday so maybe a LITTLE partying

Thursday - UW Madison starts the weekends with Thursday so it's time to start the weekend.

Friday - IT'S HERE THE WEEKEND.  Party on.

Saturday  it's party day. Nobody remembers what happens on Saturdays.

Sunday - hair of the dog day. Bloody Mary's and detoxing in the morning.

and that is how retirement is in winter.

In New Mexico the governor has called back the National Guard from the border saying President Trumps immigration warnings are FAKE! and "a charade".

Weird how all the mayors on the border towns are calling this immigrant crisis a totally fabricated "emergency".  Once again the GOP rules by fear and if there is nothing to fear that just make up shit.

Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA) claimed legalization is "about getting stoned—nothing else, nothing more."

WELL - I gotta agree.  I am pro decriminalization of all things cannabis but legalization?  hmmmmm - not sold yet.  Not AGAINST it but not really FOR it either.  On the fence.  Medical cannabis FOR SURE. Only a complete fool would be against that.

BUT, then again - every time a state comes on line with anything cannabis I make money (Canopy Growth) so . . . .

Manor Township, Pennsylvania supervisors discussed a proposed ordinance to let police officers charge low-level marijuana possession as summary offenses instead of misdemeanors.

Columbus should do this.

Talking sports heads on the Rich Eisen show were asked who the BEST team in the NBA East was, the Boston Celtics?  Philadelphia  76ers?  or Toronto.  WAIT - the team with the best record in the entire NBA was not mentioned?

BTW - The Bucks hit 19 out of 30 three pointers last night.  63.3%.

OH - JIMMY THE STICK  - There is an APB on Jimmy The Stick. Twenty Four years ago my buddy Steve McDowell and I were talking about groundhog day and how we felt that PROPERLY the groundhog did not have a clue about the sun. Why not save money and have an inanimate object observe the sun instead.

So I went outside, found a stick and created Jimmy the Stick.

Since that day he has been ALMOST held by two fighter jet jockies, went on a trip to Las Vegas (and forgot in the trunk) kidnapped for ransom, was lost in the Ground Hog Day Blizzard and many more adventures.

HOWEVER - this year he is missing.  He was turning brittle as a 24 year old stick would get and when we finished the basement I put him . . . somewhere safe.   I'm thinking in the garage but he is still missing.  yet another adventure

TV lag in GAME MODE!

Don't skim past this - its actually interesting

I was playing TGC Golf  in league a couple days ago and the conditions were rain at dusk and this is what I was faced with.   You can kind of see my club on my approach shot.

So I got on the forum and of  course complained about this and a number of guys said my settings were wrong and was I in GAME MODE on the TV.  WHAT?  I never considered that and REALLY did not know what Game Mode actually did on a TV.

SO - I was looking into this and learned GAME MODE dummy's up the TV to reduce lag. I won't try to explain it in detail but if you want to learn more go here!

What is 'Game mode'?

So now I knew what game mode was.  But my TV, a LG OLED55C7P,  has mammoth processing power so when I switched to Game Mode I did not see any real difference in lag.   BUT - I found this list of how much lag TVs have

ODDLY - I have been so infatuated with the sound system that my TV was still in factory settings for the video  SERIOUSLY?  Yea - DAAAAA!  I feel so stupid on this rookie mistake.

As luck would have it there were a few people that have my TV and sent their settings for Game Mode.  I will be 21.3 milliseconds better now.  If only my brain would be 21.3 milliseconds better.

This all happened AFTER we purchased ANOTHER TV.  A tiny 28 inch LG.  TVs are so freakish;y inexpensive it's silly and when Elweed was here we were wishing we could play virtual golf AND keep track on the PGA at the same time.   THUS - why not buy a tiny TV and put it next the the big one . . . just to keep track. What could go wrong.

It SEEMS they have not yet figured out how to make picture in picture work. COME ON!!  Weren't that bragging about that ability 20 years ago?

So!  DJ and I got a 28 inch LG and an antenna that gets 30 channels (it really does) and hooked it up and flipped it on.

As soon as I clicked ON on the remote for the tiny LG the BIG LG turned off.   hmm  Yea - that is a problem and looking at the internet IT IS A PROBLEM and for MOST TVs.

It seems remotes cannot pick and choose WHAT TV to turn on or off.  To fix it you need to NOT have two of the same MAKE TVs in the same room.     sigh!

+++++

OH - side note - My character in TGC19 now dresses like the last weeks winner of the PGA - this is my Rickie Fowler outfit.  Who will win NEXT week so I can put on new clothes  LOL

I can't not wear the knickers - it shows I purchased the game on Day one.  Only Day One players can wear knickers!

OOPS - I need white shoes!

OK OK - Trumps campaign speech last night.

As Nate Silver said - Everyone else on FiveThirtyEight is afraid to say this publicly, but this was just  bad writing ( the speech) . Like a high school sophomore in an English composition class.

It was a standard campaign speech - Immigrants are coming to kill us, the economy is great, don’t investigate me, our allies are treating us badly.  Nothing new at all.   The ONLY thing he really wants to do in the next 2 years, his BIG agenda are three things

1. Get re-elected
2. End the investigation
3. appoint more conservative judges (which is is really good at)

The rest?  It's a lot of work and he has so much TV to watch.

I really liked the part where he said immigrants are stealing all of our jobs and then a minute later says everyone has a job and our economy is strong!

Nobody will be talking about this speech by the weekend.  A non-event.  Rick Perry was the Designated Survivor.

Did anybody notice that every time the old white Republicans stood up to applaud their knees sounded like popcorn popping?  Talk about a STARK difference.

Republicans, old white males with zero clue on modern things and out of touch with society and the younger multi layered Democrats with woman and all the different flavors of our Nation.  The GOP is literally a dying breed of dinosaurs.

OH - here is a myth.  Light roasted coffee has more caffeine then dark coffee!

If you measure your coffee by scoops, light roasted coffee will have more caffeine. Since the beans are denser than a darker roast. However if you weigh out your scoops, darker roasts will have more caffeine, because there is less mass. What should also be noted is that Arabica beans vary in levels of caffeine depending on the plant species.
And, as we know from our caffeine basics the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee is so minimal, we might not even notice the difference.

Weather - watch out tonight and tomorrow.  Going to get messy but the big news is watch for next Tuesday   5-8 inches

Way too much coffee this morning

Watching the Super Bowl last night was like watching a Packer game in November when it's 70 degrees and sunny but you HAVE to watch the game . . . and the Packers lose.

The only good thing about the game was I won $10 by betting the Pats even up.  Seems like a no brainer/easy money.  Since Tom Brady has been QB the Pats have covered the spread 59.8% of the time in over 300 games.

The Rams offense SUCKED.  Only the 2nd time in SB history that a team has not scores a TD.   In fact if you are looking at analytics, the two biggest plays in the first half, as measured by "win probability",  the two biggest plays that helped your team win  . . . were both punts.

THAT, my friend is excitement.

What the NFL has to do is get more offense into the games by not allowing the wide receivers to be covered and disallow the QB from being rushed OR tackled.

SO! the NFL has two of the greatest Playoff games ever in which nobody talked about the games and only about The Play.  THEN they have the worst Superbowl and nobody wants to talk about that! LOL

Watching the game last night was my one chance to see DJ in the last 4 days.  She had baby sit all day and all night Saturday into Sunday afternoon and is now baby sitting AGAIN today.  It's like work!  She is totally missing ALL the fine weather we had this weekend.

MEANWHILE - we have been making decisions about our new deck.  The plan 3 weeks ago was for them to start the construction last week.  WELL, it SEEMS they did not want to work outside at -20  and in 2 feet of snow.  Michael F. Simon BuildersWIMPS -  So the project was put on hold for a tad.

BUT WAIT - all that snow is gone now and the weather is going back to regular winter.  Maybe we can get that deck built before spring after all.

In Politics - Of course we all have seen that Trump has spent 60% of his working hours watching TV in the White House according to official documents.  But the people who voted for him believe this is OK, it's what they do also so . . . . .  They wanted a President that talks like them and is a businessman . . .  JUST like them.

You know - when I vote for a President I want somebody MUCH MUCH smarter them I.  I don't WANT somebody like ME!  That would be a disaster.

I see Trumps Scotland golf courses (built  with Russian borrowed money) is having their financial documents subpoenaed as he is making a profit which is illegal while he is President.

********

Movies took a hit this weekend with the worst box office in 19 years FOLLOWED by the worst Super Bowl . . . .in 19 years?

Seems if you eat breakfast you eat on average 260 more calories in a day then people that do not eat breakfast . . . Well  I could have told you that!!    If you take 13 different controlled trials, eating a breakfast does nothing to you health except adding more calories.  Seems it does not matter WHEN you eat.  Even the "never eat before bedtime" is false.  Of course a triple scoop of ice cream before bed is probably not the BEST thing but fruits and nuts an berries right before bed is actually a GOOD thing.

Got blood?  Want to sell it? (not to me)  1.9% of all exports that the US has is blood. Most developed countries in the world do not allow you to sell your blood.  THUS, they buy it from Americans.  It is how we are secretly invading other countries.

My blood as too much coffee in it.

Looks like Columbus lost it's Water and Light Czar to another company.  To bad.  A real loss I feel.

Of course who would want to have that job when all you get are stupid complaints.  There was a woman saying she moved away from Columbus because water was too expensive?   Really? That was the reason?

She said with her, her husband and child they were being charged $95 a month for water.  REALLY?  If you take away the fixed charges DJ and I have $15 a month in water bill with two people.  She was $75 with one extra child?

I looked at our bill  A pretty steady $39 a month in water bills WITH the fixed charges.  But she says she pays $23 month in Beaver Dam including fixed charges.  Thus she moved away.

 I think not!

NOW it seems all the "science" behind Gatorade is a bunch bunk and GREAT marketing. There has never been any actual tests on whether the so called "electrolytes" actually WORK as advertised.

The one study had people fasting overnight and half the people were giving water and the other half Gatorade.  The  Gatorade group did much better.  WELL YEA - put sugar into an empty stomach and of course you will have more energy.

In fact they are finding people are drinking too MUCH water which is lowing the sodium in their blood to dangerous level.

NOW - it is found that - wait for it . . . .you should drink when you are thirsty.  Don't drink a ton of water thinking you need MORE then normal. You don't.  Sports drinks are 100% marketing with no real science behind their claims.  An illusion of causality.  Drink when thirsty.

Gatorade added sodium, phosphorus and potassium and called it electrolytes which only means molecules that produce ions when dissolved in water.  Not a big deal. But a GREAT selling point.

Cannabis - my Canopy Growth stock has been zooming lately . . . along with all the stock market.  Obviously everybody is rolling in the money as it's been a year?? since the huge tax break.

I read an article with a headline "Will investing in Canopy Growth Make you a Millionaire".  The answer is . . .maybe if you invest $200,000 right now.

DAMN IT!

I got in at $24 and it's $49 at the moment.

I gotta stop typing.
