Breaking a 133 Year Old Record

.
1876 was the last time we came near fifty four degrees and today we should break the record by three.

You remember 1876 don't you? In spring of 1876 vast numbers of American Indians started moving North to an encampment run by Chief Sitting Bull which created the last huge gathering of Native Americans on the Great Plains. They camped by the Little Bighorn River.

That same year Alexandr Bell invented the telephone so he could talk to his mom. But some dude named Watson answered the phone. After talking for 3 hours he yells "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you."

Wyatt Earp started work in Dodge City.

Of course on June 25th 300 men of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer are wiped out by 5,000 Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. 300 to 5000 - BRILLIANT! The battle is called The Battle of Greasy Grass Creek by us Indians.

Of course to make up for their bone head blunder in the winter of 1876 the U.S. Army, under General Ranald S. Mackenzie sneak up on peaceful Chief Dull Knife's sleeping Cheyenne village at the headwaters of the Powder River. Slash all 500 of the ponies necks, and then destroy 153 lodges and all of the villagers' winter food and clothing.

I'm an 1/4 blood Menominee Indian, my grandfather was an honorary chief. I'm not fond of the old west when if comes to that era.

Dull Knife was also known as Morning Star. "A Cheyenne warrior in every sense of the word, Morning Star was described by many writers of the century as "an admirable outlaw" compared to others like Rob Roy."

The photo on the right is from "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", an amazing book about the displacement and slaughter of the American Indian.

On a lighter note.

The movie Public Enemies will be coming to the USA Network.

It seems USA Network has acquired the exclusive network television premiere rights to all of the 2009 Universal Pictures' films. "Duplicity" "Fast & Furious" "State of Play" "Land of the Lost" "Public Enemies" "Funny People" "Couples Retreat" "The Wolfman" "Green Zone" "Atonement" "Away We Go" "The Boat That Rocked" "Cirque du Freak" "Drag Me to Hell," "Flash of Genius" "Frost/Nixon" "The Limits of Control" "Milk" "A Serious Man," "Taking Woodstock" "Traveling" "9"

Does the USA Net have commercials? I can no longer watch a movie with commercials.

I see Vinnie had a comment yesterday

It's good that LHL filled you in on the big "free building" project of a previous administration. In their great wisdom they could not turn down a "free" building that someone else was planning to tear down and haul away. Funny when the king pin of that previous administration places his rants in the letters column of the local newspaper he never mentions that big "public improvement" project of his. So now we have $100K+ in that POS and he complains about his taxes. I think it should be gold plated as a memorial to that group and their great infinite wisdom. Some pink flamingos and the classic bent over lawn lady with her underwear showing might really dress that place up. Does anyone have an old car they would be willing to donate to put up on blocks in the front? A beware of dog sign for the front window would be nice too.

SOMEONE has issues! LOL - I'm just the messenger of free speech.

When I was at the Mayoral Debate I saw a lot of smiling from the four candidates. I never smile if I can help it. Showing one's teeth is a submission signal in primates. When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life*.

I'll have to take some photos of the bonehead blunders from the past. People should know what buildings were where and how they got their and why they sit empty after costing hundreds of thousands of tax payers dollars to move.

I see people complaining that the city government does not make decisions fast enough. Geez - where was our present government then. Columbus could have used some inaction THEN. Pretty quick to pull the trigger I'd say.

Have you guys seen this map? It's from a Tony Laubach's storm chaser's website. He was chasing storms in the Texas Panhandle last weekend.

Speaking of small town controversies.

It seems there is a big hoop-de-doo over in Waunakee where they are "force-feeding" poor 1st through 4th graders Spanish in their Social Studies class. Some parents are irritated that 30 minutes a day for 3 days a week the children are learning Spanish. THEY SHOULD BE LEARNING SOCIAL STUDIES.

Social Studies covers a broad range of material and rather than focus in depth on any one topic, it provides a broad overview of human behavior right? Past and current human behavior and interactions. Man - if you can get children to learn Spanish that would be awesome.

I WISH I would have had that opportunity to learn Spanish. I took Latin in school - GREAT choice, what the hell was I thinking! I would LOVE to know Spanish. I know food cart Spanish but that is all.

I would have been a great Social Studies teacher. It's one of the two big "swing and misses" in my life.

Run to your mail boxes Thursday. The Columbus Pioneer is having a mass mailing this week. That's right, you will be able to read my paper blog for free this week.

Have a record breaking day.

  4. Outside looking in, but for years I've always been intrigued by l'affaires Columbus. There's the years-long simmering of a bunch of stuff, kind of like the coal mine fires in Pennsylvania, that I don't know anything about. Not that I should-- I'm not a Columbus property taxpayer, although I do do plenty of other business in town. But it's kind of like prurient celebrity gossip now-- I can't look away, I'm dying to know more, and I'm a little ashamed.

Photos? Stories? I know this isn't the Columbus politics/boondoggles blog... but I'd be interested enough to read that.

  5. Who is Vinnie????

Josh and I got an invitation in the mail today for the Nancy Osterhaus meet and greet Friday night. Were those send to everyone in Columbus? If so, kudos to whomever hand wrote the mailing address on all of them.

  11. Wow that Vinnie needs a little anger management. Find some meds. He never even mentioned that nearly every industry in Fall River started in Columbus. Now that's something to get ripped about!
