Happy Endings and Lake Delton

For flood news and Photos go to Captain Anne Bonny blog
-------------------------------------------

Lake Delton is/was a man made lake that formed when a earthen dam was constructed in 1908. As many of you know after the rains this weekend in our part of the country Lake Delton decided it no longer wanted to be a lake and decided to take matters into it's own hand.

The earthen dam held, but with rising waters mother nature decided to find another route to get it's water to the Wisconsin River. It cut a channel through the sandy soil of Highway A searching for the river which was only 1/4 mile away. All it needed was a small crack to get it started. It found one and with a little prying widened the crack into a 20 foot gorge. Within two hours the entire lake had drained. Three homes washed away, and another two were destroyed when their foundations were undermined by the new outflow

This area of Wisconsin is known as The Dells, a huge recreation area. Lake Delton had 20 resorts including the one Johnny Depp stayed at a few weeks ago when filming chase scenes around Mirror Lake (also now in danger).

This is a huge blow to a billion dollar industry and the lake will be refilled with construction beginning soon.

With an entire Lake of water zooming south Josh and Jenny started sand bagging yesterday until the sand bags ran out. It's not Lake Delton heading their way but a few other dams that are teetering on the edge of solidness.

For ME - I'm rethinking my use of using Grinders Weather Bubble twice in one year. The first time was keeping rain away from filming in early March and the second time Friday from the Kurth party.

Speaking of the Kurth Party. I was a great night but sadly as most larger parties go, I was not able to talk to everyone I wanted too. That's the trouble with large events, you can only spend a little time with a lot of people.

Still we did find out that John Bolger (who plays Martin Zarkovich) is afraid of Cheese Curds (as releated by his "friend" who was there). It's a health thing and I think he feels that just being in the vicinity of them brings the greater threat of The Big One when it comes to the heart.

That is why we like to deep fry them, to make them healthier. In Wisconsin we have learned that you must accustom your body to fat. It's like if you are TOO clean your body can not handle germs, same with fat globs, if you eat healthy, your body will not be able to handle the Cheese Curd Stress, yet, citizens of Wisconsin (known widely as Cheese Heads) have acclimated our bodies to Cheese Curd Stress.

So you see John is actually acting rather smart as HIS body is healthy! It's too late for the rest of us!

Public Enemies moves BACK to Wisconsin this week taking over Milwaukee and shooting the inside of the "Greencastle" robbery. This is good because Columbus was the OUTSIDE of the "Greencastle" robbery. They will be in the Milwaukee area all week.

Bryan Burrough as another update on his Vanity Fair blog - here it is.

By 2:30 a.m. my duties as an extra were long over. Over by the Biograph’s famous alley, Michael Mann was walking the actors through the climactic shot of the week, the killing of Johnny Depp’s John Dillinger. We had exchanged pleasantries earlier in the evening, but Mann was a very busy director that night, and it was growing late. I began to yawn, thinking about maybe packing it in.

Then, out of the milling crowd, Mann’s co-producer, Kevin Misher, materialized. Clad casually in jeans and a loose sweater, Kevin guided me over to Mann’s little headquarters on the adjacent sidewalk, four massive monitors tracking each of his four cameras. The moment we arrived, they began to shoot the scene. An assistant director yelled “Cars cars cars!” And from both ends of the street, the antique Hudsons and Chryslers began cruising past the theatre. “Extras extras extras!” he yelled, and one by one, the extras stepped into motion. “And…Action!” Mann barked, and then it began.

It was just like that hot night in July 1934. There, outside the theatre, stood Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, lighting a cigar to let the surrounding agents know Dillinger was coming out. In twos and threes, the extras filing began out of the theatre. Then, flanked by actresses playing the brothel owner Ana Sage and Dillinger’s girl for the night, Polly Hamilton, came Johnny Depp. He wore the same clothes Dillinger had worn, light pants, a straw boater, a clean white shirt. He emerged from the theatre, turned to his left, then meandered with the crowd maybe thirty feet down the sidewalk, where the FBI, in the person of the actor Steven Lang, portraying Agent Charles Winstead, was waiting.

They must’ve shot the scene ten times. All ended the same, with pistols raised, several loud “pop-pop-pops,” and Depp stumbling toward the alley. Over and over they shot it, as I stood just steps away, watching intently. I could tell Mann was pleased. At just about five, as the first rays of dawn appeared over Lake Michigan, an assistant yelled “That’s a wrap!” And suddenly everyone was all smiles. Plastic cups of beer appeared in Mann’s hand and those of his dozen or so cameramen and assistants.

Kevin Misher guided me to the alley’s entrance, cutting off Johnny Depp as he began to walk toward his trailer. We were introduced. I smiled and said some nice things. He smiled and in a gentle voice said some nice things. For the life of me, I can’t remember what they were. Then he clasped his hands together in front of his chest and, like some Depression-era Buddhist monk, quickly bowed and disappeared down the alley into the shadows. A few minutes later Kevin walked me over to where Christian Bale was standing in the middle of the street, chatting with others.

“Well,” Bale said as he were introduced, “I think you were a little tough on Melvin in that book of yours.” I noticed he remained in character, still speaking in Purvis’s light southern accent. I playfully defended my research, and after a moment he smiled. “Oh, I’m just busting you a little,” he said, then shook my hand.

At some point I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Michael Mann. “Don’t go anywhere,” he murmured. “I wanna show you something.” Kevin and I followed him and a crowd of assistants into one of the vacant sports bars the production had taken over. Inside, someone stood on one of the bar tables and fed a DVD into an overhead projector. There, as daylight spread across the set outside, Mann showed us the first edited scene of the movie. It had been shot the month before, in Wisconsin, the scene where Dillinger is returned to Chicago following his arrest in Arizona.

I shouldn’t say much about what I saw, but it was breathtaking, shot in gorgeous high-definition. There were smiles everywhere. Afterward Mann shook my hand and said, “Nice writing.” I walked outside into the dawn, then into a car for O’Hare, feeling as if I was a very lucky author to have my book in such capable hands.

There is an article in the USA Today about Med Flights and how they think all Med Flights should have Night Vision Goggles. Well, we had a Med Flight crash in Madison BECAUSE there were no Night Vision Goggles.

They had ordered some goggles a while ago. Problem is there is a waiting list because for goggles , all the Goggles are going to Iraq.

Tomorrow I'll have some photos of my golf course/lake. I left the camera at home.

Don't forget - Party June 21st about 10:30 to paint Amtrak Station. It'll be a hoot!

OH - Post Cards are in the Mail (and an 8x12).

  1. Now that is quite the carrot to dangle!

Awesome blog today, Rod. Especially the PE part, taking my mind off of the water issues.

  2. Wow! Wow! Wow! I love Brian Burroughs account of his time on the set! Very cool, and very nice to hear some fun news for a change!

  3. Oops! Bryan Burrough's account.... (See? I even pick on my own spelling mistakes!)!! ;)

  4. One word Oscar.....Burroughs account is the most eloquent account of the filming yet. I have been involved with 8 days of filming and they just keep getting more spectacular. With the Untouchables and Public Enemy as benchmarks this will be a monumental movie. So do you think they will move up the release date to New Years? It would give it more time to collect awards.......

  8. Well I'm going to attempt to get to Beaver Dam today. Thankfully I grew up over there and know the back roads.

My friend works here in Columbus and lives in Beaver Dam. With 151 being closed it took her over an hour to get to work this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 151 is closed? My friend drives from BD to Madison and back for her job every day and she was able to take 151 both ways yesterday. Supposedly it was down to one lane during the day, but both lanes were passable when she left for work and came back home.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 151 was very close to being closed southbound between Columbus and Madison yesterday.

Did not know it was close going up to BD.

  13. Did you get more rain last night?

    ReplyDelete
  14. No, no more rain yet. I did find water in the drum of my dryer. And it doesn't work. I wish I'd have checked that before I did laundry. :p

Robbi, looks like you kept a smile on your face during your clean-up! :)

  16. Thanks for your post today Rod. You describe what happened so clearly.

Do you think that will all this flooding they will rethink how high they should rebuild the dams etc?

When the bridge in MN collapsed, engineers were sent out to reevaluate the condition of their bridges. They found that many were in poor repair and needed updating. I wonder if they will to do that for dams as well? Even if we get these flukes of nature every 25 years, it might be a good idea. It's probably part of the ongoing maintenance. Just a thought.

    Enjoy the dry weather everyone!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well - the infrastructure of bridges and dams and so forth are always over looked until they fail.

To many other things are eating at the budgets to worry about things that have not broken YET.

From what I gather MOST dams are in need of repair. Look at the Udy(sp) dam debacle in Columbus! People are afraid to make a decision, they don't want to be wrong and lose votes! (One has been made I believe on that one).

Don't get me started on WHERE the extra money is flowing too!

In the Lake Delton case it was not the dam but what surrounded the dam that was weak.

It's like when you break you leg. When you heal the strongest point is where it was broken. Here the strongest point was the dam.

  18. I have new pics up on my blog right now. I have a few of the 151 flooding

  19. Hope things get dried out up there. Still having problems in Indiana too. Weather is just crazy anymore!

Like Bryan's blog and can't wait to see this movie!

Robbi....I love the NAS CAR shot!! lol

  20. When I was out and about today Hwy 73 heading towards Randolph out of Columbus I think is fairly close to being flooded in at least 3 sections leading up to Old Hwy 73. The water was right up to the gravel in the area where it's rather marshy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great pictures Captain Anne! I can't believe the amount of water you all are dealing with. I had been hoping that things were getting better for you all instead of worse.

Anyone heard anything else from Michelle?

    How's Jenny's house looking now?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jenny and Josh are doing well. Josh is still cleaning basement and Jenny is working upstairs. It's planned to move back in tonight but no hot water yet.

    Sun is good.

Funny story about J&Js cats and ours last night!

    Have to wait.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rod... is the water going down at all? And are you all expecting some more rain soon? How much are they predicting this time?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Unplug the drier and let it dry out good. Spin the drum by hand to get any rust off the motor(inside)let dry again. Plug it back in and try it empty it should work. The motor might have a shorter life span from any dirt that got into it from the water, but the motor is not that expensive to replace.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great news on Josh and Jenny. I hope the rain coming on Thursday doesn't create more problems.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The area by Grinder and myself has dried out. I was able to get to his neighborhood this afternoon.

But the other side of Columbus by the Crawfish River is getting worse.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Does anyone know how one would go about setting up something at one of the banks to collect money for the Columbus flood victims?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Poor Wisconsin, just keep on getting clobered with storm after storm... more rain tonight and all week being predicted, mind you. Hope they're wrong like usual for the sake of all the already-victims.

John Bolger is so awesome! Poor guy, not eating cheese curds. He's missing out on life... of course that's probably the more life that he's going to have in the long run...I love that guy!

  30. No flood insurance from Lake Delton houses lost.

Seems the Village of Lake Delton did not think flood insurance was needed. So if the Village did not have it then the home owners WHO WANTED IT could not qualify to get it because the village wasn't a participating member of the NFIP.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No insurance because of the board...not good! Boy the sh*t is going to hit the fan now.

Robbi - haven't seen you pics yet, but my heart goes out to you and all the others who have lost so much.

Osh Evan and I spen the day delivering Tessa's (wlkingbluepirate) kitty. We met up in Crown Point, IN at the jail. It only seemed fitting that we woudl gather at a PE location.

We were together with all of you today in spirit, you all entered into our thoughts, conversations and prayers frequently.

Tessa sent along goodies form Ohio which we will share at our next gathering. She is even nicer in person than on her blog 'Public Enemies - Ohio' if that is even possible!

keep us posted on how we can be of help financially (or other ways) to the flood victims...

  38. Hi, I'm here. (Michelle, that is... right now it won't let me sign into my pbhgirl name) We are still in Deerfield, just deciding when to go back. We are only a block from the Crawfish on 16/60, so it's still a bit concerning. We did go to the house today and put a lot of stuff on the second floor. Crawfish is supposed to crest tonight, I think.

151 is blocked off at Hwy 73, we were there this afternoon. I talked to Osh's son Evan and warned them, but the police are directing traffic fairly efficiently through there and they will be able to get through eventually.

  49. Hi guys just got back from our Auntie's in Columbus. She is still at her house on the Crawfish river they asked her to evacuate last night and she refused..They worked very hard last night sandbagging, pumping out water ect and are doing well and are safe. We went out on her 2nd story deck and all I can say is I am dumbfounded. In all my years I have never seen something like this. The good thing is
the water has been receding a bit it looked like 4 inches.
Just thought I give a bit of an update...All of you in C-bus we at my house are prayin' for you!!

  57. I didn't have time to address this earlier, but when you mentioned the Med Flight crash, I thought of Mark Coyne, who died on the flight. I worked several years at UW with his wife Ann and got to know Mark. He was an amazing clinician who knew his stuff and was passionate about his work. I know he died doing what he loved. Also? He was a heck of a nice guy. I miss him.

  63. Geez guys. All this really does remind me of the 70s, when my family was living in IL. Went straight from (late) easter snows to tornado season. I can remember running around barefoot and dressed in shorts in the snow melt because the weather turned so fast (which is what caused the horrendous tornado season), and then the rains that flooded everything. It sounds like the same weather cycle again. Maybe literally, since it's looking like a drought here on the West Coast (that's what happened in the mid to late 70s as well). La Nina weather cycle (El Nino is the opposite, when we get all the flooding and you get the dry, hot weather).

Not so seriously, the next time someone says, "How can you live in California with all those earthquakes?" I'm going to point at the tornadoes, floods, and lethal winter weather y'all get and conclude that I'm getting the better part of the deal. ;)

  66. I forgot to tell you that Milwaukee has been chosen for another movie to be filmed here this year. It is a thriller called "Blue World".

It stars Kaitlin Doubleday (not sure who she is), Steven Weber (has been in a ton of stuff), and Seymour Cassel.

Just thought you guys might find that interesting. Maybe it will be the summer of movies.....instead of the summer of floods.

Hope you guys are all safe, and things are getting back to normal.
