I don't have a lot of time to be faux-creative because I was out taking photos of the garden. Today is one of those ultra-rare calm days on Grinders Island so I put on a macro-lens and was shooting away.
grrrrr - Mr. Bug wobbled just as I took the shots! He was smiling at me!!
OK - today is big parade day. People in Columbus start marking off their space to watch the parade on MONDAY - five days before the event.
I gotta say one thing about Columbus - they REALLY take Independence Day seriously.
BTW - notice I call it Independence Day instead of 4th of July? Yea - many people forget that one of the greatest wars of all time was between a bunch of lowly American farmers vs. the greatest army in the world.
On this day Congress approved the wording of the Declaration of Independence and sent it to the printer.
In 1776, John Adams declared, "The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."
In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute.

Loved the bugs on the flowers! Everyone usually only takes photos of the perfect flower...what about the rest of the stuff! Loved the red bug! OH,,,nice flowers too.

ReplyDeleteThe Oshkosh parade was at 10 am. Lasted just over an hour. It may not be the best parade around, but it serves the purpose. Our County Executive, Mark Harris, was dressed as Ben Franklin. Wig with bald head and all.
Prior to the start of the parade Mayor Frank Tower read the Declaration of Independence from the Library steps. The parade runs right down Main Street and the memories came flooding back. That infamous Library corner where the crowds gathered to see Johnny go to and from Base Camp to the set and later for the Meet and Greet sessions. And I plunked my lawn chair in front of the Bank, across the street from the New Moon -- the corner where the action scenes took place. I don't think I will ever look at our Main Street the same again.

Christine thanks so much! 'We hold these truths to be self evident...' gives me goosebumps right off the bat... I served in the Navy for almost 12 years and miss it most around this time of year. I still get a lump in my throat when I hear The Star Spangled Banner.
Have a great time celebrating this weekend, I'll be out of town for most of it, so do some celebrating for me too!

I love Mr. Bug. My sister said she has seen a lot of those near milkweeds. She doesn't know what they are called either. I showed her your blog, because she is a total gardening-freak! She then showed me a ton of pictures of flowers taken with her fancy-dancy camera.
