Machete Betty's Granola Bar and Brew Pub

Yea - watch out Kurth!!! When I get my first batch of Grinder's Brown Ale (5 gallons) ready you won't be the ONLY Brewery in these here parts.

Then once I perfect (perfekt - not purfikt) the recipe and Betty opens her Granola Bar and then I augment it with stainless steel tanks and then . . . . . . what? . . . . . . was I dreaming again?

Well - I suppose I better get that first batch of Grinder's Brown Ale first. But who will help drink my beer???

Many of you (well, I was) were contemplating beer and the effects of Kurthing. WELL - here is the good news about beer.

Consuming moderate amounts of beer will lower your chances of coronary heart disease by 30-40%, compared to those who don't drink at all. Beer contains a similar amount of 'polyphenols' -- antioxidants -- as red wine and 4-5 times as many polyphenols as white wine).

Alcohol increases the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) in the bloodstream, as well as helping to decrease blood clots.

Beer contains vitamin B6, which prevents the build-up of the amino acid homocysteine, that has been linked to heart disease. In fact beer provides a 30% increase in vitamin B6 into the blood plasma -- something that neither wine nor any other liquor can do.

Beer is both fat-free and cholesterol-free.

Beer has a relaxing effect on the body thereby reducing stress and helping you sleep better.

Beer has proven to have positive effects on elderly people. It helps promote blood vessel dilation, sleep and urination.

Red Wine tried to take the healthy alcohol award but studies have shown that beer is actually slightly better.

Of course all of this is when you drink in moderation!!

Sharrow Drugs!!

Nick (may I call you Nick?) Sharrow has been at almost every meeting concerning Columbus and it's revitalization. APPLAUSE!!!!

That is why I'm giving them some free advertisement.

Some of you were looking for Public Enemies t-shirts so DJ and I went there and this is what they have.

How can I get one of these cool t-shirts, hoodies and bag thingy's? Easy - call Sharrow Drugs at
920.623.2700 - they ship!!
Sorry - forgot to look at the price tags!! Pretty reasonable if I recall correctly.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Will Johnny Deep be making another trip to Wisconsin? There is an unsubstantiated RUMOR over a few beers at the Kurth that a movie about Frank Loyd Wright has interested Johnny Depp and of course, since the murders were IN Wisconsin in the late 1910's and since they would need some old buildings . . . . . . . . . .

But I looked into the whole Murder At The Taliesin and frankly it seems a stretch! For one thing Frank was not even in Wisconsin.

It was rather grizzly anyway - In a nutshell, Julian Carlton a hired servant was serving dinner to 9 people at Taliesin (famous house Frank built). He then locked all the doors, poured gas everywhere and set the place on fire. As people jumped out a window he was there with an ax.

BUT - enough jollity for one day!!

It's not going to happen so . . . .never mind!
------------------------------------------
So you are getting married? Have a "Best Man" yet?

There are some "Best Man" ideas floating around but the TRUE meaning is not "Best" in bed as many guys want to think. ACTUALLY it's even MORE manly!!

Best Man meant BEST when when if comes to using a sword.

The best man was the armed backup in case their needed to be some sword play when disapproving parents decided they did not want their daughter to marry. Thus you would want the BEST man with the sword. The Best man would stand next to the groom ready for action in case he was needed and he would stand outside the door when the marriage was consummated.

Then there is the bridesmaid dresses. They were designed to look like the brides dress so when evil spirits or past relationships entered the church they would not easily pick out WHO was getting married.

But the most disconcerting tradition is the garter and bouquet toss, the curse of the modern weddings when it seems a lot of people all of a sudden need to go the bathroom.

Yea - it's really cool to be forced to the middle of the dance floor and show how desperate you are to get married by diving for something that until a few moments before was a little to close to the crotch of your buddy's new wife.

Dive for that bit if lacy undergarment at any other time and you would have woman backing off for the rest of your life. At least woman are only humiliated by diving for flowers.

So in the OLD days right after the "I DO" the bride and groom would immediately go into a room to consummate the marriage. To make it really official you need witnesses so the wedding party would . . . . . watch . . . sort of creepy I have to think.

So since this is when wedding dresses were something REAL special there became a tradition where the guests would sort of hurry up the process by grabbing the brides dress as they were walking to the special room. They would start ripping of the brides dress getting things started. This would accomplish two things. It would get the bride undressed faster and maybe they would get a piece of clothing for good luck. It worked out great for everyone BUT the bride.

Well - as times went on the brides started to throw then flowers at the guests to sort of throw them off the trail (it was a simple time). Then instead of having the guests WATCH you the groom would remove an article from the brides undergarments and toss it out the door as proof.

But if you ask me this really has made marriages a little more boring (for the guests).

More on marriages later, I'll let you digest that fora while.

It's Wednesday and I have fresh cheese curds - might as well take them to the Kurth tonight for some healthy refreshments!! mmmmm! curds and beer . . all we need is bacon!!

OH - July 1st garden photos!!!!

This being the first FULL year for my two main gardens I thought I better take some photos so I can compare them to NEXT year!

OVERVIEW - Clay Garden - you can see the right side is the tip of the flood spear - I built a canal now that diverts the water running down the hill along the left side and then through the "Coreopsus Gap".

Overview - Butterfly Garden - rather underwhelming but 1st year gardens are like that

Some close-ups o the gardens - my computer was made in 1970's I think and only has 3 colors, so it's tough to look at them as YOU see them. Everything looks WAY dark.

Those are some sort of pink Coreopsus in front of threadleaf Coreopsis that I planted a few weeks ago.

This JUST bloomed this morning - it's a Eva Cullum Garden Phlox

Butterfly Weed

Jethro Tull Coreopsus (they saw ME coming)

I'll have the complete garden blog up soon with my non-blooming plants!

Gotta run

Rod m - out

OH - I'm posting and THEN error checking! So if you see somethign DUMB - it'll be fixed soon.

Rod - CHEERS!

  11. 1. I can report that a crew member for PE was wearing a PE Columbus shirt in St. Anne!

    2. Betty Machete is famous the world over!

    3. Evan saw his first fire fly in St. Anne and thought it was going to eat his face. Or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I remember the "firefly incident". He asked, "Don't they bite?" and I told him my girls catch them all the time. He said, "WHY?". I said it's just for fun to see them light up. I think he thinks we're crazy.

If you come to Madison, we have TONS of fireflys. We also call them Lightning Bugs. The girls would love to show Evan how to catch them.

  13. How did I raise my kid 14 years without lightning bugs? I mean I wore cicada shells as jewels as a kid!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was attacked by hundreds of fire flys once and they lit my shirt on fire and I had 3rd degree burns! over 80% of my body!
