If You Love Him . . . Let Him Go

Whole lot of grief counseling going on today in Packer-land. Just like Emmit Smith, Joe Montana, & Jerry Rice, Broadway Brett Favre will finish his career somewhere NOT where it started. All of a sudden sports fans are faced with the realities of professional sports. It's a business.

Personally I have been looking forward to the Packers without Brett since his retirement and lately if you asked me my feelings I would be flip flopping day to day with thoughts making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

It all depended on my mood. My main thought was to not get attached to either side. It's not worth the effort, nothing I can do, go with the flow.

I wish Brett all the luck in the world. The Jets last year were 4-12 with the 7th worst offense in the League. There offensive line was one of the worst and Brett will be on his back with 1000 pound linemen on top of him way way way more then in the past 10 years.

He was sacked 19 times last year. The Jet's QB was sacked 53 times. So you have a very immobile QB in a front line that resembles a sieve. Sad.

Meanwhile the Packers just look dang good with a very mobile QB and a dominating front line, a very good running game and one of the best WR's in the league (Jennings) and one of the best Tight Ends (Lee - according to Football Outsiders) and a defense that can hold it's own.

Take a few minutes to grieve but we must move on, Brett is happy, the Packers are happy.
=============================

That's right ladies and germs - I have collected the ingredients for Depp elicious, a Double Chocolat Stout from Grinder's Island Brewery.

What in this brew you ask?

The main ingredient is 2.5 pounds of Maris Otter Pale Malt, a winter barley, considered by many to be the best Pale Ale malt available. It is still floor-malted, a labor intensive process in which the barley is turned by hand on large floors.

add to the mash

3/4 pound of Chocolate Malt
1/4 pound of Crystal 40L
1/8 pound of Roasted Barley
1/8 pound of Black Patent Malt
5 pounds of Dark Extract
1 oz of unsweetened Cocoa
1 oz of Galena Hops
and processing all of this will be British Ale 1098 yeast, about 10 billion to begin with.

It will be done 2 months after it is brewed so we're looking at late October, early November, just when we all need a pick me up for the late fall blues.

On this day in in 1947 a balsa wood raft named Kon-Tiki completed a 4,300 mile ocean journey. I'm very familiar with this as I read the book many many years ago. It made a pretty good impression on me and MAYBE was the catalyst for my many solo adventures.

The 101 day journey was from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. The explorers wanted to prove a theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drifting on ocean currents.

I don't know why this book has stuck with me for so many years. I saw a car about a month ago with Kon-Tiki as it's license plate and I really wanted to honk and give it the thumbs up but . . . that would have looked stupid.

Sometimes it's the weirdest tiny things that can shape your life.

In 1928 the American dollar shrank. Yup - it became 1/3 smaller. AND that was not all! The dinky dollar was part of a veritable fleet of smaller bills from $1 to $10,000. Even a brand new $2 bill was created.

Then a year later they shrank the bill another 25%. HOW BIG WERE THEY TO BEGIN WITH!!

Let's figure it out!

Right now a dollar is 6 inches long! (hmmm, I never measured a dollar before, IF I ever have to measure something I have a 6 inch measure r . . . GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER)

so - it was 25% larger. You can not just multiply it by 25%. Doesn't work that way. Look at it this way, it is 3/4 the original size so you have to take the inverse, 4/3 which is you have to multiply the 6 inches by 4/3 (1.33) which makes it a little less then 8 inches.

THEN 80 years agotoday they decreased the size of the 8 inch bill be 33% or 2/3rds. Ttake the inverse which is 3/2 (1.50) and the original dollar bill was a foot long. Think of the size of the billfolds they had back then!!! What about the ATMs. They had to have huge slots!

I don't know how we managed to evolve from those times. I bet their credit cards were twice as big too! SUCK!!

  3. I understand your Favre points, Rod....BUT, how do you live with the management's shoddy behavior and forgive that?

I'm not sure I can. I see both sides--I do! I'm with Angel....in mourning, and still very angry to boot.

    :(

    My post from earlier:
I guess I get to become a New York Jet Fan for a year!!!
Because I sure am not going to be a die hard Packer Fan as I have been all my life.
    I'm boycotting the season!.

Only to show the Organization they made the wrong choice...
I do get the Move Forward! But not like this.
    Just wrong in my eyes....

  5. It's one of the problems with not having a club president that can actually make a decision.

The problem was with the way the Packers are set up. There is no ONE person that can pound his fist and say THIS is what we are doing.

So what you have is a committee that hims and hahs and makes vague decisions trying to please everybody instead of MAKING A DECISION.

If we had Jerry Jones this would have never been so messy!

  6. Something to chew on from Football Outsiders.
    +++++++
After talking to my wife and reviewing my Educational Psychology, I am even more concerned about Favre’s learning curve in an all new system with new lingo.

Have any of you 30+-year olds tried learning a new language lately? It is probably five times as hard as it was when you were 18, or 22. What if you just wanted to learn a new programming language? I tried C++ 4 years ago and felt like an idiot, and I could code in BASIC at 10 and PASCAL at 14. And I can’t do HTML to save my life.

  7. I know little of football...to much to know...

But on the beer subject...I love the label...
on the money subject...strange information and fun stories...the reason I check your blog everyday!

Are there people going to Kurth's this Friday? If so what time? I think I am ready to stop lurking and come meet some of you all!

  8. I've been a Packers fan since the first fall my family lived here--1962--even through all the losing seasons. I have no idea how good Aaron Rodgers will be, or how fragile, but there are a lot of players on the team who have shown how good they are and if they keep improving on the last couple of years, the Packers won't miss Brett. I was sad to see him retire but this latest brouhaha has been maddening on so many levels! I wish him well in NY--I think he probably has one good year left in him.

Oh yeah--and I do own a share of the Packers so I'll always back them! But I'm going out and buying an AJ Hawk jersey & relegating my Favre jersey to the back of my closet with Mark Chmura's (at least for a while)!!

  9. Now THAT is a beer I would be willing to try. MMMMM Depp. . .I mean MMMMM Chocolate! Well either way!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Go JETS!!!! I always did like them. They were my #3 team. I agree with Sue-the whole thing was handled terribly. I am very disappointed in the Packers organization right now.

I would love to try your chocolate beer!! i loved Miller's version when it came out. I hope it turns out for you.

So Rod, what is your 6 inch measurerer?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh yeah! Love the Dell Chocolat pic!!

  12. I will be Evan free on Friday, and the husband will be home...I don't know if I will Kurth it or stay home and play with the 12 inches here.

I think that is about how long Dillinger is now.

    Rod!
I'm with you on the languages... I love language and always have, all sorts spoken, written, machine... All are harder now! ;(

  14. OH! I forgot about the chocolate brew, never tried one yet, I will wait for your Rod!

Sorry, no Kurth for me Friday, other plans. I'm sorry I won't get a change to meet you Cricket ;(

  15. I feel pretty much the same way you do about the Packers/Brett scenario. I think BOTH sides were at falt and this was possible the only; at least the best for both, conclusion. My son is a Vikings fan (I know; where DID I go wrong?!!) He asked me today if I was going to be a Jets fan now? I said "no, I've always been a Packer's fan and I'm still a Packer's fan". The people that will now be Jet's fans weren't true Packer's fans. They are the kind that would be fans of whatever team is on top. I will watch the Jets games now; and pray that Brett doesn't receive a debilitating injury!! As he said in an interview from New York just a little while ago; he will probably always be a Packer!
I am not a big beer drinker, Rod; but I would REALLY like to try your Depp Chocolat ale when it's ready. Just a small shot will do. I've never had chocolate beer!
Love your other stories. They say you learn something new every day; we sure do here!!
Oh, and the value of the dollar has shrunk right along with it's size!!

  16. On the part of the Packers' managements shoddy behavior, I think Brett just waited way too long! And remember; he considered retiring each of the last couple of seasons. So how could they be sure that when he told them he was ready to come back at the end of June or early part of July that he wouldn't change his mind again? At the end of last season, I wanted him to stay at least one more year. When he announced his retirement I still wanted him to stay, but I could hear the anguish in his sentences!! The mind is willing, but the body gets TIRED!!
I'm 58 and still doing childcare 12 hours a day. I know I can't do it too many more years. And I know that when I retire, there will be times when I will think that I want to do it again.

  17. I can't wait to try some of that beer!

it's a sad day in the B;azn household with the brett news...I won't go into it..but there's a lot of "words" being shared around our house, and at work LOL

I decided that I am a little mad at the whole situation...and sad too. Esp hearing how excited the jets fans are. BUT....GO PACKERS AND GO AARON!!! I am sure we will have a great season!

  19. "According to IGN.com, EA Sports plans on making available an alternative cover for the upcoming Madden NFL 09 release. The cover will take the form of a free download, and will put cover-athlete Brett Favre in his new team colors. Starting August 11, EA will make the new cover available for download via easports.com, allowing NFL junkies to showcase Favre in his new Jets uniform, as opposed to the Packers livery displayed on the official Madden 09 box. From there, you will be able to download, print, and insert the cover into your brand-spanking-new game starting August 12 – the official Madden 09 release date.

In addition, a roster update available through Xbox Live on August 11 will transfer Favre from the Packers to the Jets."

  31. I'm not sure...but I think perhaps Brett was the one who misshandled this. I still like him but I think this next season is going to make him wish he really had retired. When he messed up in Green Bay...Oh well...he'll be better next week! I'm not sure he'll get that in New York. He's a GREAT player, and has some years where it will work...but he would have "worked" better in a program he knew. You can't "go" and then "come back" and not let a team get on with their program.

    Who's
