2nd Annual Columbus Picnic

This should actually be called the 2nd Annual Columbus FAMILY Picnic as it really was more for kids then adults (no beer for adults). It was held in Fireman's park and I believe last year it was on concrete next to City Hall. MUCH better place this year.

Even though we found very little information on WHEN it was going to be held we managed to find a tiny one inch excuse me info in the paper Saturday. It seemed most places wanted to keep it a secret on what exactly it was.

I'll tell ya - one thing it was not was a place to feed your family. A little disappointing on the food area. When I heard they had brats and hot dogs I expected more then just brats and hot dogs. The kicker was even though the only real food WAS a brats or a hot dogs there were NO ONIONS. You can't have a brat OR hotdog without onions.

ANYWAY - besides that, it was actually a good time for kids and Mark Croft provided wonderful background music.

But the real fun was for the kids as there were quasi organized events to keep them entertained and I believe that since this was ACTUALLY the first year (last year does not count) this could become a major fun event for kids every year.

The 1st event we saw was the sack races.

Personally I think next year there should be an adult beer chugging contest followed by sack races. THAT would be interesting.

Then came the always fun pull your hamstring and twisted ankle races.

After the water balloon toss was completed (no photos - it was chaos) came the pop the large zit on your head contest!!

Actually I believe this was yet another piece of technology I did not have when I was a kid. They would have to balance these things and run without dropping them off their heads.

When I was a kid we had to run with boiling pots of water on my head bare foot in the snow. Fort Atkinson's Picnic was always on January 2nd Kids have it easy now a days.

This little dude showed the others that by bending the rules just a little bit he could run at full speed with ease.

Then came the take a random side tug-of-war where teams were switching sides in mid pull and the always funny "big kids all letting go at the same time" gig.

This little guy (in happier times) was having a ball. I think he wore himself out though

Here is the competition just before the big kid "let go at the same time". Another photo opp missed.

But wait - the fun is about to get messy.

hmmmmm - what do this four all have in common.

What they have in common is something that they might remember all of their lives. A once in a lifetime (at least until they join a sorority or fraternity) chance to get REALLY sticky!!

This reminds me of a party I had in the the 70's . . . . but I digress

This is where Brian De Palma got an idea for the movie Carrie.

No humans were eaten after they were made into human deserts which is always a good thing (as we found on one fateful day in Fort Atkinson).

And that was how the 2nd Annual Columbus Picnic went. Lots of fun and laughs and I hope next year will be bigger and more people will show up. It seems the one problem Columbus has is it is afraid to promote itself. So many good things happen here that no one hears about.

The Columbus Carriage Classic could have more people from the Madison area with more advertising in the newspapers, the picnic was an unknown to many people. The 4th of July weekend is only a word of mouth thing and the fact that Columbus is actually HERE and a Main Street Community is not even known until you are driving INTO the town itself.

It's time Columbus starts to toot it's horn a little, start screaming to the masses.

HELLO!!! WE'RE HERE!!!

I leave you with a calming photo of Milo.

Going to teh Brewer game tonight!

Have a great day!

Rod

  1. I feel a little sick after looking at the garbage sack pics (having 2 cinnamon rolls for breakfast probably didn't help)!

LOVE the shot of the little guy on the rope...

I was with Jenny, sick all weekend and working on Labor Day. Maybe next year...

  2. Very sad news for Stop Light Guy!!! Universal “accidentally” destroyed his original Chicago Stop Light, the one that was used as a template for making copies which were used in Columbus. It was destroyed six months ago but they failed to actually inform him and he needed lawyers to find out. They promised him it's safety when they borrowed it but . . . . . .

John that stinks about the stop light! I tried everything I could to get one of the license plates for my car from the filming. They told me outright Universal would rather destroy everything than take a chance someone would make a profit on the memorabilia. I saw one guy get $25 for a Dillinger 45 cartridge from Depp’s tommy gun on e-bay (Oshkosh scene) so I guess I understand, but it still stinks. $40,000 worth of reproduction license plates through the grinder (no pun intended)
You would think they could make a great movie and still have some respect for those of us that made it possible.

  3. Yeah, Scott--some of what went on really does stink. I think it's all part of Hollywood. :/

Great summary of the day, Rod. No onions was the gripe of the day all around. Are we in Wisconsin? Hello? Brats without onions? Why bother?

    :P

And no beer....that was the reason my parents came up with for it being so sparse. (They don't drink anymore).

It was A-Okay to just hang out for a few hours though. Nice seeing some of the blogger friends on a day off. :)

I wanna go to the Brewer game!! ;)

  7. I wish I could have come to the picnic yesterday :( I had a fever of 102.6! I am feeling a little better today (no fever), but still in bed. Next year I'll definitely be there.

Is that Autumn I see in the tug of war pic?

  8. I meant to get over there and say hello Rod, but you were busy taking photos and I was busy with Julia. :) I agree, there should have been more food available. We brought our own picnic, though. Mark was awesome as usual!

Great to see you Suz and nice to meet your parents.

Jenny, I hope you are feeling better today.

  12. I'm really sorry we missed the picnic after seeing your photos! The grandkids would have LOVED it! Next year!! Why didn't anyone run to the grocery store and buy a few onions? Geez; hot dogs and brats without onions is like a picnic without beer!
So sorry stop light guy's story has such an unhappy ending. Hope his lawyer gets good $$ settlement for him! They really need to be made more responsible! Love all of the pics today (yesterday), Rod!

  15. A little late to this one. My wife and I stopped by the picnic (almost walked by because not much seemed to be going on). Yep, no onions or sauerkraut but it was cheap ;-)

The one thing that was really missing was a recycling bin. Kind of sad to see the trash, plastic and aluminum all thrown in the same few cans. We "packed it out". As we watched the electric cars being demoed the irony definitely struck me.
