====================
I played in a tournament at Jodee Os in Columbus last night. What a very smokey place that is. I swear every person there was smoking. NOT that I'm anti smoker but it is one reason I don't like bars that much. I came in 5th when I went all in and my neighbor (literally, the guy lives next to me) was carrying pocket Aces! OOPS!!!
=====================
I'm always a little sleepy this time of year. Baseball. I stay up way to late. Pretty good game last night but I can not understand why Tampa Bay would have an enclosed and ugly stadium.
==============
It's flu shot season and everyone but me is walking around with sore arms. My theory is if everyone gets a flu shot I won't need one. Plus, there is an upside to the flu. You lose weight!!
That sore arm thing is interesting. The reason your arm is sort is not that they are sticking a very sharp object into your muscle. While that is painful it's not really the reason. The reason is due to the adjuvant used in the vaccine.
An adjuvant* is something that your innate immune system recognizes as a "danger signal". The innate immune system is like a default defense. It responds to danger but in a generic way. PAIN PAIN ALARM ALARM!! Not smart enough to know WHAT the danger is but it knows something is terribly wrong. It's the first line of defense and pain is an alarm signal, like the fire whistle.
The goal of the innate immune system is to put up a wall around the perceived problem and call for help. This call goes to the adaptive immune system. The adaptive immune system is highly specialized but normally sleeping letting the innates do all the patrolling until called upon.
Well - it's wake-up time, the innates are in trouble. The adaptive's can "see" the adjuvant, dead bits of naughty virus in the bloodstream and cross referencing innates hand wringing cries for help figures out that the few live bits of naughty virus it is coming across is the problem and attacks them and starts to call in and create more reinforcements in case it finds more naughty virus. It is ready for future problems now.
So back to arm pain. It's the side effects of the adjuvent that is only used to wake up the innates. Swelling and soreness comes from the non-specific response by the innate. It's the only thing they know how to do.
This years virus strain seems to need more adjuvent then normal.
adjuvents* = are either bits of dead bacteria/viruses that are harmless but your innate immune system recognizes as a sign that a potentially harmful pathogen is around, or a synthetic that mimics these danger signals.
If you arm is sore, take some aspirin, put some ice on the arm. Keep in moving and don't baby it. It'll go away (the pain, not the arm).

This happens twice a day in Columbus and I really get a tickle about that. I guess I'm a train buff.
Have a good Thursday

I am interested in how many readers out there get a flu shot. I've never gotten one before. I heard that you can get the flu just by getting the vaccine. I just try to wash my hands alot, especially before I eat.
ReplyDeleteNo - you can not get the flu from the shot - not enough flu bugs to get the flu.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER - they have been wrong the last few years on WHICH flu to shoot you with.
It doesn't seem to matter to me if I get the shot or not. I have gotten it the last few years (the shot) but as Grinder said, I got the wrong version and got sick anyway.
ReplyDeleteHey, when they show Julie's Java on the show, my BFFs and I are out on their patio. We don't get to talk, but thankfully I'm having a good hair day. No such luck for my legs.
Kathy - how much hair is on your legs to have a bad hair leg day anyway.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Kathy! Your fame is coming!! :)
ReplyDeleteI do not get the flu shot--even when I was teaching and it was free. I like to let my immune system do its own thing... I have heard that if you get it once, you better keep doing it every year because your body needs it to defend again.
Trains! I freaking love trains! Remember how quiet it was when the flood ruined the tracks and no trains could come through? It felt WRONG for those several weeks.
Great blog! Still waiting for some follow-up news on the Favre accusations....
ive never had a flu shot before, but im pregnant this winter, and so i figured i better get one.
ReplyDeleteim a nursing student, and another reason why you arm can hurt is if the nurse/person giving the shot didnt pull up on your muscle. its called the z-track method, http://tinyurl.com/6s7qy9
it helps to lock the vaccine into your muscle and not into your fat layer under the skin.
if the vaccine sits in your fat layer or just under the skin, it can cause more pain then normal. some nurses just stab the shot into the arm, that technically is wrong, and can lead to more discomfort for the patient! :)
ReplyDeleteI got a shot last year but I probably wont get one this year. I really should because I have asthma. But I only had the flu really bad once and that was 20 years ago. I think I'll take my chances.
ReplyDeleteI got talked into getting one last year.
ReplyDeleteThe only way I think I'll avoid getting one this year is if I skip my employer mandated annual physical.
I had a lady doctor tell me to spin my arm around in a big circle. The centrifugal force spins the stuff away....a lot less pain! It sound too simple, but it works, the flu shots are the worst.
ReplyDeleteHow did the Subaru turn out? "loose nut in the drivers seat" was my first thought! LOL
Graham Man
How can your employer make you have a yearly physical? I didn't think your job would be one that required it. I could understand for a police officer or something like that...
ReplyDeleteJ-
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty accident prone.
LHL
Honda cost $300 smackers with a broken wiper motor. (including oil change and other random stuff - who knew it cost $80 to rotate the air in my tires.
ReplyDeleteI hate that place!! LOL
Rod...you should take some of your beer here this weekend.
ReplyDeletehttp://brewfestgb.com/
Come to Green Bay on a "bye" week. :)
LHL - So you and Josh really ARE alike! He almost stabbed himself in the thigh last Friday.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the passed 10 years he almost drowned in sewage, spilled acid on his face, emacerated the fingers on his right hand, had heat exhaustion so bad he almost died, had a lawn tractor land on top of him, was infected with the neurovirus and had that strange bumpy rash on the left hand side of his body.
Scott and I both have to have yearly physicals with his work insurance...but it is company owned.
ReplyDeleteI will NEVER have a flu shot! So I am right there with you Rod. I would rather get the flu than have the shot! My Grandad had a very bad reaction to flue shot and was in hospital for 6 weeks(in England). Not sure what really caused it, but it was certainly suspicious it happened 24 hours after he got the shot. I would rather get the flu then have the shot anyday!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing the Columbus special on tv. What do you mean they overlooked Grinder's Nanobrewery? LOL...we will have to remedy that one!
I wish I fixed my cars just for fun, well the old ones I do. Having cars fixed for me drives me crazy! Some kid fixes it and then I have to fix it again correctly. Then the money!! I have heard so many horror stories it is unbelievable. Take you Honda; I will guess a 2001 Accord? A rebuilt wiper motor is $90 from Autozone, and say $30 for the oil change, lets not forget $30 for the tire rotation, (give me a break they rotate all the time!) so lets see where we are at $300 less $150 leaves $150, give them 15 min to change it out lat leaves a meager $600/hour to change your wiper motor……CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteI just got the train video to work for me! I loved it! How cool would it be for all of us to hop on the train, and end up in Columbus, or vice versa!!! I wonder where we could go on that train! How fun would that be to go on an adventure!
ReplyDeletePS- I have only ridden a train twice in my life, and I don't even remember it. :(
I love train travel...
ReplyDeleteHello all! Just to let you know, a group has been started to plan events that will be held sometime close to the release of the movie. We had a brainstorming session last night and lots of ideas have been tossed around. We will decide on a date soon- have to check other events first and then fine-tune from there. If you have any suggestions or would like to be involved at all please let me know. I'm at the Visitor Center/Gallery Wed. thru Sunday, the phone number is 920-623-5325 or email me at info@columbusmainstreet.org
ReplyDeleteWe will need lots of volunteer help when we finally figure out the events!
and by the way- get a flu shot- the flu is so bad you really don't want it! I had it once and it was horrible!
