An Amazing Coinkydink

I do my most productive thinking in the shower (which might explain why my computers are dieing on me) and last night after working out I was thinking about "why I blog". I've been blogging 5 days a week for almost 4 years now and it's not like I'm getting paid or anything. WHY!!

I started to look into my past and realized that a long long time ago, in the egg of time when I was not allowed to cross the street I had my own newspaper. My parents purchased some sort of goopy thing where you would heat it up and spread this . . . .rubber cement stuff flat in a tray.

Then I would take these little letters and make words and sentences. Spread ink on the letters and press them onto the goopy thing. The goop would hold the ink for 10 or 15 sheets of paper and bingo, a little newspaper.

As I got older I used my moms light blue Smith Corona Silent Super which had a black AND red ribbon for typing stuff. However - the wordy time of my life was about to end when spelling became more important. My dyslexia was taking hold and I moved on to numbers and became a numbers person. Numbers are their own language. I can stare at an entire page of numbers and be totally happy.

One thing lead to another and while I was creating websites full of numbers about blackjack and poker I had to use words to explain what the numbers meant.

Don't worry - I AM making a interesting point here, bear (bare?) with me.

The advent of the spelling checker brought me out of a 40 year shell and I had LOTS to say, but no one to talk to! THUS . . . . blogging.

ANYWAY - last night I was contacted by an unknown person who was NOT trying to get me to give him my SSN so I could become rich from his deceased father who just died in a diamond mine accident.

His email sounded somewhat sane and said that Columbus was getting a new newspaper, the Columbus Pioneer and he asked if I wanted to have a regular column. I had sort of a "Curious Case of Benjamin Button" moment. Am I becoming a child?

Why would a newspaper doom itself from the very beginning!! Me?? What do I have to say that has any relevance to anything!!

Does he not know he will have to hire another person to spell check and correct my grammar? Does he not know that I have used up my exclamation point allowance? I will be forced to use a different punctuation to indicate strong feelings??? What else is there!!! damn!! 3 more ARRG 2 more!! STOP IT! doh.

Did you know the exclamation was first used in printing in the 1400s and was called the "note of admiration" until the 1600s. The light blue Smith Corona Silent Super did not even HAVE a "!", you had to type a "." then back space and type a " ' " on top of the previous letter - try THAT on your lap top! HA! (Macs can probably do it as they are superior in every way to PCs).

So that is the news - A new newspaper is coming to Columbus and somehow I'm going to weezle my way into some part of it.

============================
Weather - When was the last time Southern Wisconsin MISSED a major winter storm. The one hitting the east coast was a near miss and they are getting 1/2 inch of ice and then 3 inches of snow. SWEET!

I was looking at calendar year 2007 and 2008 and I looked back all 130+ years that Wisconsin has been keeping weather records. There has never been back to back years with this much snow. Total for the two years was 97.26 inches precip and 199.1 inches of snow (normal would have been 66 inches and 99 inches of snow).

I bet kids will look back and wonder about how "we used to have so much snow" . . . . .sort of like what I used to say a few years ago looking back when I was a kid.
================================

In 1789 today was the very first American election. Only white males that owned property were allowed to vote. George Washington won, he ran unopposed. The guy chopped down cherry trees for God sake!!

Also - in 1927 the Harlem Globetrotters play their first game, they won.

Have a day

  1. Columbus is getting a new newspaper?? How cool! And the fact that you are going to have a column in it is AWESOME! You'll do great!

I am not a spelling champ by any means either LOL ALthough I do enjoy writing, I rely on others to check my spelling hee hee.

We sure did have a lot of snow the past two years....wonder when it will be my turn to say "I walked to school in four feet of snow, backwards, and barefoot." LMAO! Gotta love parents!

    Have a great day!

  2. When I was a kid, we had to walk to school in 10 feet of snow, up hill, both ways carrying a warm potato in our hands just to keep warm, and then we ate the potato for lunch! And more than once we got frostbitten fingers on our way home......

  6. Too funny, I am the same way with spelling. Maybe you could mirror a sight for the paper and the blog? Save some writing and be on line at the same time. Type writer and bad spelling....lots of white out, my kids don't even know what white out is LOL

  7. Hi guys!

I just bought a copy of EMPIRE Magazine, and it has a 5 page article on Public Enemies, with pictures, and an interview from Michael Mann in it!

It is dated jan 2009, and has Wolverine from Xmen on the cover.

Just thought you'd like to know :)

  10. From what I gather there are a group of 4 people from Columbus that are the eyes and ears (they really did steal my idea . . . not that anyone KNEW I had that idea). A full time reporter, a sports reporter and a few others.

Mr. La Mesa Newspaper editor has experience with running a paper and is the mad man with his fingers on the dials.

It'll be a real Columbus newspaper, not a Beaver Dam extra edition insert thingy.

  11. What's his connection to Columbus? Did he throw a dart at a map and say I'm doing a newspaper here? Does he have many newspapers in Mayberries? There is hardly enough news to fill one newspaper! Sure can't be in it for the money.

Seems a bit weird to me but he did land a good writer anyway.

  12. Before you know it he'll need your bank account numbers to "direct deposit" your check for the first article...

  14. Me too, Shaken!! I'm finding myself reading 3 and 4 (sometimes more) days worth of blog at a time now to catch up!
I don't know or care who the unknown fellow is that is starting this new venture in Columbus, but he sure picked a winner for articles!! You have a way of making the most trivial or mundane things fun and interesting, Rod. Good luck with the new adventure!!

  15. I'm with anonymous...this seems a bit "off" to me...this paper, but we'll see and Rod would be a great writer! You could write for the current paper- it would certainly improve it!
