Jimmy the Stick Day + The Columbus Community Garden

version #2

The day we have all been waiting for is here - It's Jimmy the Stick Day 2009 and on this day Jimmy saw his shadow. This means that we will not have an early spring (which would occur in six weeks) but will now have to suffer through six more weeks of winter.

Actual Dramatization
do not try this at home
The story behind Jimmy started 16 years ago when a colleague of mine and I were talking about just how aware a Ground Hog actually was when it came to shadows. We thought perhaps we should test this on a stick and what we found was a stick was as aware IF NOT MORE of it's shadow then a large rodent.

Thus the legend of Jimmy the Stick started.

In reality there is a tiny bit of science related to seeing your shadow and predicting the weather . . over the long run. A shadow would mean the air is dry which means the warming moist air from the south and west have not arrived yet. If there were clouds it would mean that we are getting air which has more water to it.

At this point in the year, clouds = good.
===============================
Saturday night we were sitting around talking about Columbus and Josh said "We need a Community Garden, a place where we can go and plant vegetables" and we all agreed.

Then Sunday morning DJ and I went to Pic-N-Save to do some holiday shopping and we both commented how we thought the place was getting better.

I was in the checkout line and a woman and I started talking and she commented that she thought PnS was getting better and I said I agreed 100%. And out of the blue she made a comment about how it would be nice to have a Community Garden.

DJ and I were floored as we were just talking about that.

It seems she is heading a group trying to get this and I mention that it would be a great thing for the city and she was all "no we don't want the city to be involved and start making rules" and I was all "no I don't even want the city to hear about this because then they will give us rakes and I'll take one home for my butterfly garden and then they will like tell me I can no longer come their there stupid garden because I stole a rake and they will say your covanance does not like even let you have a garden and then they will hire lawyers and I'll lose my house and I don't even like vegetables".

So then she said maybe somebody could contact the Columbus Pioneer and I said I knew somebody that could reach them. Her name is Jenny Perkins a 2nd District elected official (I don't even know where the 2nd District is - the link is broken) and maybe if anyone from the CP reads this it's a story (and I'll email you also).

Jenny was actually the 2nd person I heard in PnS utter the name Columbus Pioneer. I'm not sure who the other one was but I did hear they tried to call the office and email. I think it was a congratulations. Maybe someone purchased their Pet dressed rabbits.

Speaking of Columbus and politics - You have until noon Monday to put questions into the red boxes at the banks and the Senior Center. I can not but if anyone reads this and is near a bank I have two questions you could drop in.

1. The people of Columbus are tired of seeing their city constantly at odds with itself. As Mayor what would you do to get the city government to work in greater harmony. Towns people take our cue from you and in 20 years Columbus Government has not been a good roll model.

and more importantly

2. As Mayor what is your stance on getting a Planetarium and a Taco Bell to relocate to Columbus.
=================================
Superbowl.

Madden - ya gotta love that guy here are a few wonderful quotes that I wrote on my new iTouch**.

"The gap between winning and losing is the biggest gap in sports". What? what does that mean??

Also - The Cards get a Safety and with about two and a half minutes to play, down by less then a touchdown he says "This is a very big series". WOW - is it really? This one? I'm glad he told me!

It really was a great game (lost my shirt). It seems the games are actually overshadowing the commercials. 5 of the last 8 games have been close and exciting. Before that 10 in a row were blowouts of non-exciting.

The winning commercial did not come from a highly paid ad-agency - it actually was done by two out of work guys that won a contest (and $1 million - they are still out of work).

=======================
** iTouch - ACTUALLY it's an Ipod Touch but people mistakenly call it an iTouch.

Also - WHERE can I get 3D glasses!! I need them for CHUCK tonight!

Have a great day

  1. Rod - You can get 3D glasses by any Pepsi display from what I have heard. MOST P&S's have them but you might want to check out something in MadCity before going home.

  3. Community Gardens... yes! The city has a piece of land on West Maple Ave. and part of that land will be developed as a park. Yes to the gardens, yes to walking and biking trails.

  5. The people of Columbus demand a Taco Bell and Planetarium! :)

  6. I'm going to post this tomorrow but HOLY HELL is Christian Bale on a SERIOUS rant - listen to this but BE WARNED!!!! It is rather uncomfortable.

    I guess the cinematography director walked into a shot, spurring the incident.

    The tape was sent to the insurance company by producers in case christian dropped out of the movie.”

  10. Groundhogs get all the press with their sleepy eyes and cute little scrunched up faces, but I'm strangely compelled by Jimmy the Stick.

    He throws back his arms in exuberance, openness, a tad vulnerable to whatever the elements may be, with vaguely religious symbolism. I just want to hug him. Jimmy the Stick, you're the man!

  12. I answered my own question. Here is part of an article I found...

    "It happened after director of photography Shane Hurlbut apparently walked through the set of "Terminator: Salvation," distracting the actor in the middle of a big scene.

    Christian Bale went off on the DP, calling him every name in the book, trying to get him fired, etc., etc.

    It's pretty brutal."

  13. Apparently the Oscars may have clips from upcoming films included in the broadcast this year: http://tinyurl.com/aqvm74

    "The idea, if the clips prove watchable, is for Mr. Jackman to sign off the broadcast with fresh 10-second snippets of two dozen new movies, to run on a split screen with the end credits."

    I figure it's something to keep an eye on just in case!

  15. Don't worry about 3D glasses LOL

    I watched the 3D movie trailer yesterday, and all I saw was one measley little 3D moment...was sad.

    A community garden huh? Sounds fun! Too bad I don't live in Columbus!

    That stick thingy is funny! Darn those shadows!!!

  16. Man, that reminds me of when I took that second Flat Squirrel without asking. Holy crap you would have thought I walked onto a movie set or something...

  17. Planetarium and Taco Bell... how about a KFC and Green Car dealership? Green cars come in several different colors... does that count?

  19. I tried watching Chuck in my 3-D glasses and it didn't work...very disappointing!

  20. I love Jimmy the Stick! We could plant him by the community gardens and have our own Columbus-style celebration of Feb. 2, starring Jimmy the Stick.

    We could all drive there in our different colored green cars and munch on sun-dried tomatoes with basil from our community garden and steal Grinder's brew that he made using hops he grew in the community garden while he yells profanities at us.

    I love taking cold medicine - it really enhances my creativity.
