Micro-watching Public Enemies

So some people said I was too harsh on Public Enemies in my review yesterday. Maybe I was but I wanted to make sure I was not just being a cheerleader.

The one thing I have noticed in my conversations with Columbus people that have only seen the movie once is that they really did not watch the movie at all.

Most were watching for locations shots of Columbus, Beaver Dam, Oshkosh, bank scenes, picture cars and themselves. BUT WAIT - those are only the MACRO watchers. There is an entire group of people that were MICRO watching. Julie at Julies Java House who served many of the crew was watching the sheets!!! Yea sheets and pillows. Seems she ironed and ironed trying to get creases out of the sheets and pillow that JD and MC made love on and even though they were perfect when delivered "THERE WERE CREASES" (something new to watch for).

Another person was watching for her chair, others looking at wall paper and even more looking for framed pictures on stands and lots of kitchen stuff. That kitchen scene was in the Poser house and is actually a kitchen inside a kitchen (we will put a kitchen inside your old kitchen - sorry - local advertisement joke).

So when you ask the question "what did you think of the movie?" you also have to ask "how many times have you seen the movie?" If it is only once - take their answer with a grain of salt.

As for the populace as a whole, Public Enemies is getting a strong B+. 89% of the respondents give it a "B" or higher and 65% are "A's". Ratings are higher then Transformers OR Ice Age. Right now Public Enemies might not be the biggest at the box office but it's getting good word of mouth which is very important for this type of movie.

I have not seen the reciepts from last night but opening day box office total was a little over $8M which I believe is good.

And speaking of movies.

Try on, No God No Master Columbus.

Even though Illinois has increased their movie incentives (as opposed to Wisconsin dropping it entirely) there is a movie being made in Milwaukee about the 1919 Terrorist bombing on Wall Street. I was informed by Todd Frey that the movie company has talked to him about horse drawn carriages.

If you don't know, unofficially, Columbus Carriage Works is possibly the largest horse drawn carriage company in the world. Todd has some serious stuff going on across from the City Hall. If a movie company is looking for horse drawn carriages he is the go to guy.

OK - did I just hear that?

The bankers are upset over Public Enemies and how it is making bank robbery cool. So - they want new rules saying you can not wear a hat inside a bank?

Back on topic - - - No God No Master is I THINK about the first Red Scare as it was believed the the bombing was from communist elements.

Stay tuned.
==========================

Mr. Ed's traveling carnival is in town and we checked it out last night and DJ had to physically push me away from eating Funnel Cakes. There is nothing better for you then fried dough!! Are these a regional thing like cheese curds? I did have deep fried cheese curds ;-)

So here is the carnival. I'm not sure how big this will blow up on blogger but I love looking at the people having fun! If you can eat Funnel Cakes AND Cheese Curds back to back let me know - I'll call an ambulance!

Remember - big parade this weekend and serious awesome fireworks Saturday night.

Have a great weekend and if you see me on a float give me a holler or some guy with a camera at the carny - buy me a Funnel cake!! NO NO don't do that!!

  1. Man, is everyone sleeping in or having to work :( today...

Ok I have only seen it once, SO FAR going for round two today @ Sundance in Hilldale mall (love those theatres) I will see if the sound is any different here than Eastgate (I sat in the back middle and didn't have problems with sound, although some of the dialogue was very very softspoken and I missed it I just thought it was me trying to see things instead of listening-I must admit I didn't even see the sheets!!!!)

Hubby is going this time and I want his opinion he hasn't read the book yet, because I was rereading it hahaha. Don't know if I can squeeze in a third watch this weekend, we want to go see "UP" too.
Great carnival pics Rod, the colors are fabulous

Have a great Holiday weekend everyone

  8. Film vs Digital (I have seen both now)

Picture was beter on film but the sound was better on digital...go figure

  9. Blu-ray has the best audio - it's the biggest difference I have seen between normal HD and Blu-ray - the audio.

  10. Does anybody have more information about the Wall street movie? Or any info on any movies being filmed in Illinois,Wisc,Michigan or Indiana that they might need extras for?

I tried out for Public Enemies around April last year, but when they told me I would have to cut my hair short I didnt want to do it.

  11. does anyone know what Bryan Burroughs thinks of the finished film?

2nd viewing-I liked PE better. My hubby thought it was good, not great, but good and great cast. Marion's performance is really awesome. We saw it @ Sundance and I swear the screen is bigger. I think the sound we better too the guns were very loud but I cold hear the lines I missed before. I did see some graininess and wondered if it was to intentionally evoke the newsreel feeling? (like switching colors when the plane @ Oshkosh brings Dillinger back under arrest?)

Does anyone know if that's Bryan Burroughs just to the right of Depp just after he exits the biograph?

  12. It was odd that BB did not attend the Chicago Premier.

I've never been to Sundance but I've heard it's pretty darn nice.

I have heard EVERY person who has seen the movie twice say #2 was better.

"newsreel feeling" - yea ONCE - should have done it more often.

Also - they should have had a map of where robber's took place and where Little Bo is in Wisconsin.

  13. Hoping to see it for the second time on Sunday in Beaver Dam (will be on the big screen). I got a review from a friend who is a Depp fanatic, but doesn't care for this type of movie normally. She saw it yesterday and gave it a thumbs up!! I bought the sound track too and love it!! Of course, I'm old enough to remember the some of the songs.
Think Wisconsin will be really sorry they dropped the incentives. Bet it's back with the next election!

  15. Loved the float guys! Best in the parade by far!

Did anyone see the 9/11 = inside job car. Caused many to boo and stand there in silence. WTF! It's 4th of July. Poor taste in my opinion.

  16. Grinder: look @ www.publicenemies.net
universal's site for the movie has alot of background info on Dillinger and maps of all the major robberies and more info, pretty cool

I think the movie will sell alot of copies of Bryan Burroughs books!! (it will peak the curiousity to make people want to find out more I think) Someone in the lobby said did he really visit the dillinger squad office, I said YES, you need to read the book!!!!

I did hear a "this is the dumbest movie I have ever seen" after Purvis shot Nelson, Van Meter and Carroll (?) right after Little Bo. FBI did get them but NOT anything like that-it didn't bother me but some people want everything historically accurate and the movie would too loonnnnggg.

    Happy 4th everyone...

  18. Hi All,
Just wanted to say what a great day!
    The Parade Rocked!
    Our Float was Awesome!

Then came home and relaxed and refreshed and came back for Fireworks.
Tried to find Rod and the gang, but no luck. It was packed in there.
So we went and got some popcorn and pumped into Dave Calypso's Hubby and there son.So they came and joined us.
we sat just outside the gate by 1st base.
Then watched The Boogie Men for awhile!
They were great, of course I am bias. I know the Bass player.
    Heehee!

I sure hope everyone had a great day!
