And There Ya Have It

It's hard for me to review a movie that I have written about for over a year and then harder to write about it after seeing the film from the 2nd row looking UP. I feel I only saw the middle part of the movie and perhaps I missed whole plot lines that were going on beyond my peripheral vision.

I can' wait to see it again, I'll only watch the sides.

I also can't wait for the DVD so I can see it in HD. Seriously, I've been spoiled by 1080i. A few nights ago I was watching The Kingdom I had recorded from HBO and I had to turn it off. Non-HD.

You see even though the movie was filmed in HD does not mean a 25 year old theater has the ability to show HD movies. Perhaps next year when maybe a new East Gate opens up (I believe I said that last year in this blog) they will have a digital theater.

Anyway - last night was the PE-Columbus Premier party and for the most part it went off without a hitch. Oh - there were some close calls as a buddy called from WISC at the same time I was warning people they were about to get run over by a backing-up Picture Car and I had to either hang up on him or call an ambulance. I quickly surmised that I would have to hang up anyway to call an ambulance so I spared some lives (I do what I can).

Had some Pizza issues for the post party that Kim at West James Gallery took care of and Day One came through like Trooper Zang busting Columbus folks for lack of license plates. On the ball and taking numbers.

So my thoughts on the movie?

Everybody I talked to that saw the movie the 2nd time said #2 was better. #1 was more looking for scenes, remembering what you were doing when that scene was filmed and for me I was remembering what I was writing about and what photos were being sent to me during each location of shooting.

I feel the movie was in three movements. The first was perhaps a Allegro moderato, moderately quick with hand held cameras and escape scenes and DJ got a little dizzy in row two and had to move to the back of the theater. It's a little crazy dizzy blurry action. Not as loud as I had hoped and actually the "normal" talking parts were too soft compared to the action parts. This disturbed me but I could not tell if it was just my seating location.

A few of the trailer scenes were in the Allegro moderato movement and this always bothered me while watching the movie as I had . . sadly . . memorized those little jewels and now I could see what was wrapped around the trailer nuggets. It sort of took me outside the movie for a few moments.

Then things calm down with the Adagio movement, slow and stately. This is where we meet the lovely Billie Frechette and how she and Johnny (John) Dillinger meet up.

The problem was that I kept thinking WHY WHY WHY would you go out with this guy, are you that desperate? (I guess so). Not that Dillinger is a BAD mean guy but seriously, "I rob banks" is not a one liner I would have ever thought would work. Perhaps “He-e-e-e-re’s Johnny!” or “Say hello to my little friend” would have worked also. Obviously she was not too picky!

Even “Tell me something, Billie. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight” would have worked.

But - I digress.

So Adagio (maybe a Lento Moderato?) was plodding along and I'm sitting there with thoughts of "what if I don't like the movie" and "this is not making me want to come and watch it again" and I'm thinking maybe I'm missing stuff on the left and right sides of the screen.

HOWEVER.

Things turn as a trailer moment pulls me out of my worry and John is caught. OH - I'm not saying the last movement was bad but I was there for muzzle flashes. Who cares about character development.

The very fast and lively Vivacissimo movement is upon us and the last hour and a half (rough guesstimation) is what I came to see and it is outstanding and well worth the wait. Lost of bank robberies and tommy gun action and the Little Bo sequence is GREAT!!!!

Machine Gun Kelly (or was that Baby Face Nelson - they all look alike), now there is a dude I would not want to go out and party with. Seems a little . . .dangerous and shall I say, a loose cannon?

Violence? Actually I think the most violent parts do not involve tommy guns but some mild torture and beating of Billie but all are done in good taste. It's more in your brain then on the screen.

Johnny Depp is great and does his own take on gangsters and Christian Bale is a very good Purvis. I loved Jason Clarke as Red and all the rest of the bad guys all sort of looked alike (again perhaps I was too close, one 10 foot head looks like another 10 foot head).

Marion Cotillard is captivating. I had never really seen her in a movie (at least not that I know of). Billy Crudup is funny as Hoover and all his scenes were in The Wisconsin State Capital and a stand up applause goes out to John Michael Bolger who plays Martin Zarkovich.

I give the movie a solid "B".

I read that they expect $45M for opening weekend and this is good for an "R" rated movie. I feel it will be more as word of mouth seems to be very positive.

Well worth the wait and I was not disappointed. Columbus was well represented, lots of Oshkosh and Beaver Dam was in there.

Back to our event. WOW - I was surprised so many people turned up for the post movie party which lasted to about midnight (when we had to close). I was thinking 150ish but it was more like 200. WELL DONE!! Everybody was happy and smiling and I feel it was a huge success. Can't wait for the next movie.

What? The Department of Commerce put the nix on more movies by canceling movie incentives? What a bunch of blundering idiots! Good grief are they that stupid?

No wonder Janesville lost General Motors. The Department of Commerce can't think more then a week ahead. They seem to think that now that Universal has left the State the State will no longer reap any benefits! DAA HELLO!! KNOCK KNOCK ANYBODY HOME?

Maybe they should get out of their offices and travel the state and talk to shop owners that deal with tourism. Perhaps there is some group that put pressure on them to make dumb decisions (like Minnesota? perhaps?) . . .did I just insult Minnesota? No no - just the Department of Commerce in Wisconsin.

They do not see how many people already travel to Columbus, Oshkosh, Little Bo, Madison because of this movie.

Absurd.

Don't get me started.

So, now what. Well, 402,000 pages later the movie is out there and this blog will continue to roll like a soap opera, oh, it's never over.

NOW - I need more coffee.

Have a great day and if you have not seen the movie - check it out! It's good, not great but very good.

  1. Hi Rod, Callie from Rhode Island here, I saw it yesterday on a BIG screen and it was very LOUD!!! I sat at an end of the aisle seat near the back, good view. I really enjoyed the movie and this morning I am still thinking about it. I think I will definitly see it again, I felt like this was a movie you really had to keep thinking while you were watching it. Glad to hear you had a great time at your party. What a great year your town has had!!!

  2. I loved seeing the final product. I don't feel ready to grade the movie because of that "picking out scenes" that happened to me throughout the movie too. ;)

I will say from a "guest" perspective that the organizing you all did was stellar. My hat is off to you, Rod....and everyone else behind the scenes, in front of the scenes, and off to the sides. An awesome job of putting out an A+ event!! Thank you to all who helped make it so fun for those of us who just wanted take that ride. :)

  3. Rod,
What no group photo!!!! Lost opportunity, just like WI lack of foresight. Great article about our little LaCrosse Party Friday 3:30 to 7:00 south side LaCrosse Marcus Theater. Stop by and take some photos!

  4. Right on Rod. Sounds like you were a little disappointed as I was. I'll see the movie a second time and see what changes. The sound was odd even from the middle of the theatre at Eastgate with dialogue low and guns high. I look forward to the DVD or Bluray for the extras. Thanks for the blog.

  5. no no - not disappointed at all. I enjoyed the movie but as suz says the "picking out scenes" problem cropped up way to often.

I took a few photos but I wanted to enjoy the moment and not "work" for a change. Worrying about a camera and so forth can be draining.

  6. Desperate Schmesperate! Johnny's "Im a bankrobber" line would have worked on me! I think it's the "tough guy that you want to change" syndrome. Anyhow. I really enjoyed the movie, even tho it typically wouldnt be my kind of movie. I jokingly suggested to the bus that we go see the chick flick "The Proposal" instead, but they didnt go for it - glad they didnt! Was also a great party! Thank you to everyone who turned out to support the movie and Columbus Main Street!!!

  7. I was pretty disappointed. Mostly in the editing and sound mixing. Like you said, the sound mixing was so inconsistent. I saw it in two different theaters, so I don't think that was the problem. It would continuously go from loud to soft to loud, which really takes back from the cinematic illusion. And I just can't get used to the way they filmed it. It looks like a behind the scenes feature, rather than an actual movie.

But on a more exciting note, I made it into two different scenes (the Capitol press conference, and the Darlington courthouse).

  8. I'm going to have to watch it again, just like you. I was sitting too close to the screen to take in all the action. It was a little dizzy at first, and i got lost for a bit. Then things settled down, but I still felt that it was a bit choppy in spots. Kind of like it had been "cut and pasted", you know?

    Now that being said ...

Depp did an outstanding job, as did the other actors. I was impressed with Jason Clarke, who was in the movie for much more than I thought he would be. I also liked Marion. She had people in tears.

I also think that I was caught up in too much of the story line, and the filming. I've never watched a movie that I have seen filmed. I kept thinking "There not in Indiana, their in COlumbus!" LOL!

Also, the cheers from the audience whenever Columbus was on screen was soooo funny! I loved it!

I'm going to have to watch it (from the back of the theater) with more of an objective view.

The after party was a blast! You guys did a GREAT job!!! Was so much fun!

  9. When Vix says that Marion had people in tears she is talking about me, since I was sitting next to her crying in my purse (and this was the second time seeing PE!

Now you all remember my Ursual/Anna Patzke upset---the bank teller hostage played by the chick from Lost...that Bryan Burroughs called Anna, even though her name was Ursula, which can be verified by a super quick google search...

Dudes, in the end credits, they list her as Barbara Patzke...Even after having Purvis say " Anna Patzke identifies this as Dillinger's coat."

Clearly my sickness means I need to move to Hollywood to be a fact checker.

  10. Grinder, We all had a GREAT time last night (even if you couldn't think of anything to say about one of your sponsors LOL)

My take on the movie is that it was great fun to see my hometown on the big screen...but, I've enjoyed movies more...

I'm pretty sure the Who'sits in Who'sville will disagree with me...

  11. You HAVE to see this from further back. I also saw it way too close from like row 8 at the Ultrascreen and had a headache and did not enjoy it so close. It was grainy and blurry and I had to scan the screen to take it all in. Saw it yesterday twice from the last row and it was SO much better. Really enjoyed it. Going to see it tonight again.

Has anyone seen it in digital? I know Graham Man says it was grainy in Digital in Minneapolis.

I heard ILL INCREASED their tax break to Movies by 10%!!!

  14. Great Blog!!!

I will agree with having to see it again.
I was in the second row from the front and could not take it all in.
I need to be in the back.
    But I will say! Wow!!!!

I have to say Thank You to Main Street and the rest of you for putting this together!
    What an incredible experience!!!
    It was so much fun!!!!
    Great Job!!! Bravo!!Bravo!!!

Yay for Channel 3 Very nice!!!

  15. PE broke out of the gates with $8M+ which I believe might be more then expected. Most in the business are predicting $41M to 45M but only $15M before the weekend with $26M Friday thru Sunday.

Ice Age beat it last night!!

    WE"RE #3!!

  16. There have been a lot of complaints about the sound. I had no problems in the theater I saw it in here in Montana and a friend has seen it twice (not sure where) but she said the sound was terrible in the first theater and excellent in the second. So I would think it has to do with how they set the dials in each theater????

  17. I totally agree with your feelings on the movie. I think it was really well done; keeping with the era and since it was filmed a great deal on the locations it really felt like a documentary! Talking with a couple of people who haven't seen it yet, they said that they had heard it is slow. I said there are slower parts, but life isn't ALL bank robbing and shoot 'em up! The slow parts fit the story line. And let me have a
break from the dizziness (I was in the third row and really thought I
would be sick shortly before the end). The party was great; saw a lot of people that I haven't seen for months; since the last time I was able to make it to the Kurth.
I agree about the budget change. I think tourism will see a BIG increase because of this movie. They should have waited to make any changes to the incentives until AFTER the movies' release and the results are in. Of course, I think a couple of the other things they put in this budget are DUMB too, but that's another subject. I was hoping you had gotten some photos of the costumes worn by some of the Columbus residents. I didn't want to take the time before the movie, thinking I could get some at the party, and then TOTALLY forgot while there! If anyone has some, I'd love to see them! You can send them to me directly at scrapper11@charter.net if you'd like.

  18. I would have to say I was most upset about the sound mixing and that Michael Mann (who has to get everything down to the littlest details) got a some facts wrong and that he left some major things out. But overall the movie was really really really good. I would have to say A- or a B+.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would like to read more reviews too, especially after people see it again (and again...)

Sorry I missed everyone, I was @ the 6:45 showing (Columbus showing sold out)...anyway

I would have been "lost" following the story line without having read the book. The friend I saw it with immediately said "I have to read that book"Another friend who had read the book was disapointed because some of the facts were changed for the movie.

I really LIKED the movie I give it a A-. I can see where the critics see that there is not enough character development (especially not the main characters-that movie would have been SOOOOOOO LOOOONNGGG. I thought Depp, Bale and Marion were very good. I don't think they showed enough tensin between Hoover and Purvis. They made Purvis seem more competent than he was.

I was extremely tense waiting for what 2 the Biograph......that blast thru "dillinger's" head.....ugh.. I like the way the Clark Gable movie burning up quick gangster life paralleled Dillinger who didn't know when but probably knew it would eventually get him.

Can't wait to see it again, as I too kept saying, Capitol, Columbus, Oshkosh, etc. hard to watch while waiting for stuff to recognize-I can see why Depp dosen't want to watch himself. I was only there during some of the filming and was majorly distracted. I can't imagine working as hard as a lead actor to develop a character and do many, many takes and see what gets cut and what gets in-movies are a directors vision indeed.

Now I can't wait for the DVD!!!!! and I thought I could have a life now LOL.......I think we need a new countdown when we learn the dvd release date.

Sorry for being so long winded......

  21. The best theater to see this in is the Sundance Cinema in Madison. Really. Saw this at the Marcus Ultrascreen (too close), Star Cinema in Fitchburg (better but sound was too low) Sundance (Best ever). First time I was ever there and will always go there now. It cost a little more but...

1.Reserved seats (excellent when buying in advance, no rushing to get a good seat.)

2.No one under 21 allowed at the 7 or 10 pm showings (sorry teenagers).

3.Bottled beer and wine at your seats.

    4. Not sure if it was Digital but it sure looked like it. Best picture and sound. During the bank robberies you hear women screaming and yo almost look around to see where it's coming from. It's that good.

If you see this a second or third time you HAVE to go to Sundance before they change theaters.
