SO - according to Paul Scharf (a real reporter) Columbus will soon be getting national attention from ABC (American Broadcasting Company, not the alphabet). Why? Can you all say Public Enemies. Yea - Governor Doyle - suck on that! Who needs movies in Wisconsin right?
It seems "Good Morning America" is doing a feature on "the traditional American circus" and Columbus was picked as the feature town because Public Enemies was filmed here. Also factored in was that Columbus is a "beautiful historic town".
The Carson and Barnes Circus has the worlds largest Big Top and is the worlds largest traveling zoo and calls itself a $3 million self contained nomadic city on wheels. Wednesday they are in West Bend, Thursday Columbus, Friday Racine. They will visit 11 towns and have 42 shows in 20 days and this is a slow part of their schedule.
The big thing is that the morning set-up is something very very special as humans, elephants and technology will work side-by-side to erect "the worlds most spectacular and largest circus Big Top". So be sure to be there around Firemans Park 9ish in the morning.
They also have the second largest herd of elephants in the United States and are proud supporters of the Endangered Ark Foundation for the preservation of the extremely endangered Asian elephant and other animals.
COOL!
===============================
With that said - DJ and I were playing with our new Tom Tom (GPS unit) and ended up in Fox Lake, a little town I had never been in. We were looking for something to eat and came across this little place.
Well - obviously I did not actually READ the left hand sign as I have no photo of the elevator and I'm just hoping it was nothing to really look at. We have to go back to look at this pretty little museum this summer.
We were still hungry and came across a Mullins Drive In.Awesome - Another Mullins. I have to say that this Mullins was better then our Mullins. Sorry. Our Mullins burgers are just too big. I would rather have a traditional hamburger.
This place was interesting as they would bring out a water bowl for your dog automatically and each table had it's own fly swatter (no having to borrow fly swatters from strangers). I'm surprised PETA was not there picketing.
DJ liked their T-shirts and we asked the Mayor of Fox Lake (Gerald Mullin) if we could buy one but he was out of "smalls" so we'll have to go back.
Good food, friendly place. As a visitor - I LIKE Fox Lake. They had lots of pretty planters on their streets (so does Portage) Columbus has two, maybe one tiny arborvitae.
Then on the way out of town we come across this about Fox Lake native Bunny Berigan.
OK - so you are trying to read the lower flower covered last few sentences which say his life and music came to an untimely end in New York. No reason given.
Well ladies and germs, the reason it is not given because he died of alcoholism.
Of course I type that while drinking a 1 week old 1 Putt 12 APA.
Fox lake has a Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee that takes place at Mullins Fox Lake every May. Mention this blog and get in free (or don't mention it and still get in free).
Bunnys music was used in the film Save the Tiger, the Roman Polanski film Chinatown, and a Martin Scorsese short film,The Big Shave (1967).

and one last thing - NO - I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
3 things in no particular order.
ReplyDelete1. I can't believe that flower shot didn't make the cut.
2. I can't believe you noticed the roll issue. ;)
3. That Bunny guy's grandfather's name was Schlitzberg....is there any wonder he was an alcoholic musician with roots like his?
1. The flower has that dark triangle near the bottom which keeps drawing my eyes to its nothingness.
ReplyDelete2. I had help - I actually thought APPROPRIATION was wrong and was suppose to be ABERRATION ( a departure from a course or procedure or from a norm).
3. Schlitzberg. mmmmmmmmmmm!
Did you know there is a list of alcohol related deaths? One list I don't want to be on.
I get what you're saying about the photo. Still, I disagree. The tigerlilies almost glow, so they are the first part of the photo that the eye is drawn to, then you notice that abyss where there is nothing, but....the eye then focuses upward and sees the purple coneflowers and those yellow (coreopsis?) flowers. It makes for a textured, lingering photo.
ReplyDeleteI'm just saying. :)
3 things in no particular order.
ReplyDelete1. No way is Mullins Fox Lake better than Mullins Columbus.
2. What are active rolls? Buns with high levels of yeast or whole grains and high fiber?
3. Your flower shot looks like it could have been taken in our garden. We have the same flowers together. Very nice. Should have made the cut but of course I have lower standards.
Well - "the cut" is not set in stone.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mullins - I only had a burger at the FL Mullins and while it was more of a classic burger with faux cheese I HATE Cbus Onions and while the burger is better it's too big for me to eat so I stay away from them now.
I only had the ice cream once and - dare I say - it was too big also. I don't need 1000 calories of ice cream in a small cone.
I guess that is my beef - the food is to large.
yup - my garden, Day lilies, Cone Flowers and coreopsis. Todd - drove past your little farm - your horses look weird - you been riding them too much?
3 things in no particular order
ReplyDelete1. Columbus Sign! Rolls.
Someone has a great sense of humor or a great set of rolls!
2.Can't believe that picture did not make the cut! To me the orange pops and makes you look at that.
3. Glad you found Fox Lake! and love the photo of the RR station.
It is a cute town.
Hope everyone is having a great day!
