What the hell was that smell last night. Anybody else in Columbus smell it? Like a dump burning? I thought my smoke alarm was going to go off. I was trying to ignore it but I started having house fire dreams. This is two nights in a row. I had to shut my windows.
Anyone anyone?

This was sent to me by Mike who also commented on the lack of comments on yesterdays blog. DJ and I agreed that perhaps I should not blog today but . . . . . then Mike sends a video and we get the smell from hell and Main Street had interesting news so . . . . . damn it.
This is an amazing video - it's the longer version but I think it's better. Watch the tree's. You guys can thank Mike for today's blog!

In case anyone is wondering dihydrogen oxide is water.

Josh was at Fan4Ever's closing sale in Madison and he got some real good deals. As he was talking to the owner (who is moving his store to downtown Columbus) the owner said he would be doing more framing then sport card selling which would be going onto the internet.
I did see his new COMING SOON sign in what they call the Bassett and Davies addition a Gothic Rewvival which was build in 1877. It's actually one of my favorite facades in Columbus. 114 North Ludington (I'll take photos of the place this weekend - I have a project in mind for downtown Columbus).
ANYWAY - the sign says Cardinal Custom Framing and I have heard that he is still going to get big name sports stars coming in from time to time for autographs (how much should I charge them for my autograph . . . they have lots of money).
My Letter to the Editor (which it seems no one read) was truthful. Columbus has really turned the corner I believe. It took a little momentum shove from former Mayor Nancy Osterhaus but she got the ball rolling in the right direction.
It seems Columbus is getting a good many visitors from Public Enemies (the movie). I guess a couple flew from California to visit Columbus ONLY because of the movie. Now some people will say "I bet they were disappointed" but I don't think so. There are many movie buffs that just want to travel to sets and see what the directors saw.

Speaking of beer.
I did not realize that Sierra Nevada is basically 100% off the grid and 100% self-sufficient when it comes to energy. In fact the only time the are "on the grid" is when they sell BACK their excess energy. They convert their 200,000 gallons of wastewater they have every day into methane. They use trains and trucks that run on biodiesel which is created from the used grains and yeast. Yet another reason to buy Sierra Nevada beer, of course they make OUTSTANDING beer anyway.
When I was investigating a brewery I was amazed at how much water a typical brewery uses. Something like every gallon of beer produces 10 gallons of waste water.
----------
Hard Heads is closing - but I THINK they are closing to move to MAYBE the Fireman's Pub building (so they can keep better tabs on Jodee o's).
Todd has come up with yet another hair brained idea (which I believe would be awesome).
Turn the OLD West James Gallery (as not seen in Public Enemies) into a Art house/Museum that would have all sorts of historical history of Columbus on display. I hope the Columbus Historical Society . . . . . .what? . . . . . . we don't have a historical group for historical Columbus? Was this overlooked? We really should get one. I'll look on ebay for any groups, maybe we can get one cheap.
HEY - the Harvest Days Celebration is thinking . . .BEER! How 'bout a frosty cold can of Miller on Octobeer 10th.
Also - I'll be looking for volunteers to help me with the 1st Annual Homebrewers Festival next year. I'll be attending the 6th Annual London Homebrew Festival Saturday the 15th and taking notes and photos. I think I can talk many of the brewers into attending (I'm going to offer them free beer, how can you turn THAT down).
My one problem is a date! I never see beer fests early in the summer, is there a reason? It seems they all start popping up now. My vision is to have an event with some sort of band, food made by local merchants and local GOOD homebrews. Proceeds would go to MainStreet Organization (non-profit group means no liqueur license is needed and we would not be SELLING beer anyway).
I think Columbus is ready for good beer. I keep hearing people say "we need good beer". There was a guy laying in the gutter with a bottle of Mountain Spring made by Minhas Brewery (the makes of that awesome Lazy Mutt***) complaining of a stomach ache. I guess spending $2.89 for a 6-pack was not the best idea.
** - Minhas Lazy Mutt Reviews - "Jeez, I don't know what to say. I feel like a was a volunteer in a cruel medical experiment. I picked it up because it had a great gimmick, an eight pack for a six pack price. Sounded good at the time but now I have to dump out seven beers instead of five.
Poured into a pint, really cloudy, like unfiltered apple juice.
I thought at first that it was tainted or rotten, but after reading the other reviews it appears that it's just really terrible. Not much more to say about it, avoid at all cost."
"The taste is a little sour at first, but goes straight downhill from there. I really don't know how to explain the taste, other than just plain terrible. The aftertaste sticks around for thirty minutes and is not pleasant. There's hardly any feel to be had.
All in all this is the worst beer I can remember ever drinking. The worst part is the aftertaste that sticks with you. I see no reason why anyone would pay to drink this beer."
"Dammit, this is horrible. I am seriously wondering if these aren't spoiled. By far and away the WORST beer I have ever tried. i would be sentenced to a lifetime of Mich Ultra, than to try this **** again."
NOTE - out of 59 reviews Lazy Mutt did have a D+ rating while Michelob Ultra was a solid "F" the very worst beer you can find on Beer Advocate.
Gotta go - keep warm and have a nice weekend - Kurth at your own risk - storms coming in tonight! could be iffy! Maybe go for NEXT Friday?
And finally - I pulled back the processing a little on Mr. BumbleBee - I like this one better.
Rod
Rod,
ReplyDeleteJust so you know, I read your letter to the editor and thought it was very nice.
I had to laugh about the idea of finding a historical group on E-bay but one would think we would have such a group here. And if we did, that would be an awesome idea for the gallery.
Great Blog!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!Spectacular! Mike!
Thanks for the footage of that train. Yikes!
I believe people do come from all over just to see places that have been filmed. I think most movie buffs here of a place and make it a point to see it at some point or another.
Columbus was a great place for filming with all the old buildings still intact.
I say Come One Come All!!!!!
You will love the little big town.
Todd has a good idea going on!
