Little did I know that I would have a real island. When I went up to the fireman last night and he told me I was basically on an island I realized . . . it was Grinders Island.
Which is different then Osh's Grinders Island.
Me and my friend were stuck. I could not drive him home to Madison.
This morning we awoke to the "smell" alarm going off and looking at the alarm clock I saw . . nothing. No power. The smell alarm was running on low batteries for the last 8 hours.
So I see we had a newspaper, the road must be open. I gather my friend and driving back to Madison we run into another horrific thunderstorm. I let him off in MadCity and I ALMOST get home.
BLOCKED. Everything is flooded again with another 2 inch rainstorm in 1/2 hour. I'm a mile from home and in th rain I park the car, get out and proceed to walk through the rising water (on the street). At one point it was over my knees but I made it.
So far we have received almost 8 inches of rain in 20 hours! I don't think there will be any golf on the course for a long long time. There are still two rivers flowing on either side of the fairway.
Jenny and Josh were forced out of their home with rising water. Sounds like 3 or 4 feet in the basement and 3 feet in the garage from the little creek.
That is the actual color - no touching up at all.
You can not see the waterfall by that big tree. That is a nice size river flowing next to our yard.
Our exit and the Columbus Country Club Golf Course - oops - Lake. The water goes on for six blocks.
I'll have meeting stuff and Train Station stuff tomorrow. Scrape book sue - you might be interested in making something for the Train Station - Contact me at some point.
I think things are calming down a little weather wise . . .maybe. We'll see.
I hope everyone is OK, safe and dry and not to many things have been lost.
Island Rod
Hi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteThe Who'ses are all safe and dry! If there is ANYTHING that we can do to help...give us a shout.
Can you stop it from raining?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteJosh posted more pics from yesterday on his blog: www.barkingjosh.blogspot.com
I wish we would have gotten pics of it when it was three feet high.
Hope everyone is safe. Sorry wasn't able to make it to Kurths 2nd round of colds and now the flu bug in our house. Got home just in time after Fall River's High School Graduation, was a little scary when the sirens were going off. Jenny I hope your house is ok.
ReplyDeleteGreat Pictures Rod scary sight but that is mother nature and you captured them in the most beautiful way
Shannon
Hi Shakenbsis! I wasn't at Kurth's the other night (though I did wave at the space station & shuttle as they flew overhead). I'm in Chicago and with gas prices through the roof, a road trip to Columbus isn't in the cards. It looks like you guys have a fun time though! Maybe I'll make it up there one of these days. (I'm a sucker for cheese curds!)
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about all of the flooding and bad weather up there. The flood pictures look awful. We'll keep you guys in our thoughts. Makes me glad to live on the 35th floor!
We got caught in a gully-washer last night at the White Sox game, but nothing too major. Gotta wonder how this weather is affecting the tight film schedule on PE. Hopefully they're filming indoors!
We're evacuating again. All our ways out are quickly blocking. More soon.
ReplyDeleteWhat did you have in mind for the train station, Rod? Before and after pics? If you and Michelle can get some photos, and any story/history you'd want included, I'll see what I can do!
ReplyDeleteAll of the photos look so terrible! I drove past the river in Beaver Dam a little while ago and it's way over it's banks too. And flowing at a pretty good clip! They probably have the dam wide open; poor people downstream!!!
Thanks all for continuing to keep us updated, feel so helpless right now, wish there were some immediate thing I could do to help.
ReplyDeleteRod, you are very lucky you weren't injured. Very dangerous walking through flood waters! Hopefully your car will be fine.
Please stay safe all...
Sorry mcskippy, I misunderstood ;)
I was wondering about the weather affecting filming also...
Hey everyone, this is Rianna- daughter of krisx and Left Hand Louie.
ReplyDeleteThought I'd post some pictures of our oceanside view.

I know people were asking about it.

shakenbsis - no probs walking - I was actually swimming and keeping my mouth open taking drinks along the way - you don't think that was bad do ya?
ReplyDeleteOH - The train station is looking for user submitted PE Art. 11x14 or larger in a black frame - you can include a selling option.
Sue - I know if you made something scrapbookish you would get $$ sooner or later - just thinking out loud.
I was having my own hellish day yesterday but ya know, even in that my thoughts were with you folks in Columbus. Just listening to the radio live weather coverage, I knew you were getting nailed. :(
ReplyDeleteBlog question for Rod...or anyone who can answer... How do you make you links clickable within your blog entries? I've tried on my blog and it never works. If I use the button provided it just doesn't show up at all. Help??
Hi everybody, I've been reading your blog on and off since March and think it's really great!! Lots of good PE info and a really great "community" blog. I hope you all are safe from all the storms and everything dries up quickly!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you guys had it rough in the storms... hope everything goes okay!
ReplyDeleteAnd I can relate to being stranded. I got stuck in Sheboygan overnight trying to get back out to Chilton yesterday after grad parties. Nothing that bad, though!
debsmad, maybe this will make sense

Rod, the sky picture is freakishly awesome.
Stay safe guys!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you affected by this weekend's storms. Jenny, I am praying esp. hard for you and Josh! You are strong, you have each other, and you have your humor! Keep those important things and you'll make it through.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Johnny Depp!
ReplyDeleteMichelle has found a place to stay and is going to wait til the waters go down.
It hasn't rained here in Madison for awhile.. how's it looking in C-bus for the evening?
Pouring in Oshkosh again.
ReplyDeleteJust Starting to rain in Columbus.
ReplyDeleteOh Great. I just checked the radar, another soaker on the way...just what we need.
ReplyDeleteThose of you on Grinder's (real) Island, hang on. Here it comes again!!!!
We had an absolute downpour here in the Brandon area about ten minutes ago. It's still raining now but alot lighter.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Osh! Your instructions worked! :)
I just got my car from the other side of the Island. Oddly - I had a flash forward to th past! Weird - some guy named Desmond was there.
ReplyDeletegrinder - at least you still have your sense of humor! lmao
ReplyDeletethank you Rianna!! - sorry I misspelled your name on my blog. Did you get your pics?
Sorry also about beachfront porperty, is your house ok?
Another weird thing - I'm looking at all the debris in the flood water - looks like corn garbage.
ReplyDeleteMust be coming in from the surrounding fields?
I heard they used the biggest firetruck (the new one) to weigh the bridge down so it would not float away when it was UW (Under Water). .
who'sinmybasement - your A LIFER - Can you remember anything like this happening before (at least back to the 70's and then things might get foggy?)?
ReplyDeleteI posted some more pics of Columbus on my blog. As I speak it's thundering and black outside. The water was starting to recede down the road from me but I'm guessing that won't last for long.
ReplyDeleteWe've had as much rain, but I don't ever remember this much surface water. Washington Park, the one across from Cenex used to flood regularly. I don't remember Water Street flooding the way it has. I bet Jenny and Josh have a REAL MESS after. today. If afraid the river water will be going up for a couple of days yet, even if we don't get more rain (like we're getting right now.)
ReplyDeleteWe took a little trip north on 73 this afternoon, there is a lot of water coming off fields that will eventually end up in the Crawfish, upriver from Columbus.
I haven't been down on Brookside, is the water rising there?
We've changed a lot of topography the last few years. None of the houses around you were there 5 years ago. I guess we'll have to see how well the enginers did their jobs.
Stay safe.
The problem we are having in Columbus right now is because of run off from the corn fields. All the debris on my street is corn cobs and stalks.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking the new developments around Columbus is what is causing the problems right now. Not sure if they didn't plan them correctly or something.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Anne Bonny - we have had over 8 inches of rain now - not sure anything can be done.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone has a pump Josh & Jenny can use in the next day they really need one. 4 feet of water in the basement - no electricity until they can empty it.
Sump Pump is underwater so it's of no use.
I have a pump...but i'm 75 miles away. :(
ReplyDeleteI'll be driving by the Columbus exit tomorrow afternoon, I will be thinking of y'all!
ReplyDeleteI think I should pick up a spare sub pump to have just in case the one I have dies.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Anne Bonny - you know you have comment moderation turn on don't you?
ReplyDeleteAs of 6:41 my pro style rain gauge has gotten 8.41 inches of rain since 3PM yesterday.
Rod,
ReplyDeleteBefore the Parkview Addition, late 60's early 70's, I remember the field that existed here was often under water. Brookside has flooded many times over the years, we just haven't seen it for 10-15 years.
When we were first married we lived in an apartment on Waterloo St. The field that we looked at, out our front window (now Kestral Ridge) was often a lke.
ReplyDeleteCapt. Anne Bonny,
ReplyDeleteI think we live about 3 or 4 houses away from each other. Who knew? I've get who's living in my basement again tomorrow night, perhaps you could help keep an eye on them?
OK 7:27 was supposed to say "lake".
ReplyDeleteLong as I remember, the rains been pour'n down. Clouds of mystry pour'n confusion on the groud.
ReplyDeleteSorry ya'all, you've taken me back to the 70's.
ReplyDeleteThey just said on Chan 15 that we may get 2-3 inches of rain with the next round!!!OMG!
ReplyDeleteRod,
the largest amount of rainfall that I remember in a storm system was about 12 inches over 3-4 days. We are going to surpass that!!!
They are calling for more rain over the next days. Maybe I need to move my boat from Green Lake to Columbus so I can get to work.
Who'll stop the rain?
ReplyDeleteJust came back from a grad party in Waterloo. Took us several tries to get there (shoulda been our first clue to stay put). The campsites at Astico park are underwater, and the water was real high, close to the top of the bridge at Danville. Scary stuff. Our ride home was in torrential rains, hydroplaning oppourtunities, and mini-roadside rivers. Scrapbook room is under water, about 6 inches now I'd say. I'm supposed to start working at the Columbus pool tomorrow but we couldn't even drive there tonight. Does anyone know if the pool is flooded?
I just got home from work and it poured all the way to and from again today. (Plus all the in between rainfall). I'm afraid to go into my basement. The maintenance man said he couldn't do much about it, but had a call in to the landlord. What are the odds he's gonna get someone to "fix it" right now? Still....the worst that means for me is a visit to the laundromat, no other loss.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed by the sheer volume of water coming from the sky. Those with the real issues still have my sincere thoughts for a quick return to normalcy in your own homes.
Stay dry, and don't anybody swim in the streets even though Rod thinks it's fun. ;)
We finally made it to my mom and Rod's this late afternoon when Avalon was clear. Now I'm sure it's flooded again :P
ReplyDeleteBut we are safe and dry at least!
Get this - since 3PM Yesterday
ReplyDeleteThe City of Columbus has received
2,337,294,573
(Two Billion, three hundred thirty seven million, two hundred ninety four thousand five hundred seventy) three gallons of water.
8.71 inches of rain and that is with 8 hours 3:00 to 9:00 of the rain gauge being tipped over.
Rod-
ReplyDeletef.y.i
back in the 90's your neighbors in Parkview 2 were some what flooded
( hubby lived there in high school with parents.) due to the "creek" at the entrance. I haven't been to columbus to see what it really looks like.
Hope you all stay dry My uncle is on the Fire Dept there and it sound like there is alot of water and they are sandbagging. Thinking of you all in Columbus.
laura
NBC15 just posted that in Columbus classes are canceled tomorrow due to the flooding (but teachers/workers still have to report; huh?). Yikes! Here just southwest of Madison, it's raining again and our yard is a pool for the third time today. We had a flooded basement back in March and are REALLY hoping to avoid that again. Keeping fingers crossed that the sump pump keeps going! We have everything in plastic bins now (bought every last one on hand at Home Depot last time). Good luck everyone!
ReplyDeletesam
My landlord got someone here to get the basement water taken care of--I can't believe it! But indeed, there is a hose pumping it out through the window by the stairs. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I have a big leak in the roof in my living room. :s
Rod,
ReplyDeleteAre you guys OK? If you need something, we can get it for you. We have a kayak and can deliver it to your side of the "great divide". Or should I just call it your name Grinder's Island?
How's everyone doing there after this last round of rain?
ReplyDeleteWho'sinmybasement.
ReplyDeleteWe're hunkered down here for the night, not sure if we are gonna be able to make it in for work tomorrow. You may have to bring your boat and rescue us if the water doesn't receed!
Thanks for the wood offer Mary, it will probably be awhile until everything is dry and picked up. Our FirePit floated down the street. It is somewhere past JodeeOs.
We're good! Are we cut off again? I would think it is!
ReplyDeleteJenny's wood is looking for Jenny's fire pit - find one you will find the other.
That last stome was only about 1.5 inches - phttt!
YOU CAN DO BETTER THEN THAT!!! BRING IT ON!!
By the way. If anyone sees a greenish blue plastic duck with bouncy wings, it belongs to us. It floated away with the first flood. If you see an orange one, that's probably ours too. Hehe!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your leak Suz :(
Hello All
ReplyDeleteJust got back in from helping my neighbors out with their basements! It is just a mess. i am going to put some more pictures up on my blof of all the flooding we have had in Waukesha.
It is now storming outside, and the sirens went off about an hour ago. We were hauling stuff out of our basement at the time, and ran for cover again. Seems to have died down a bit, but I guess we are in for some more quite shortly.
The Fox river by our house has overflowed, and there is mass amounts of water everywhere!
I hope everyone is safe! Esp you guys in Columbus! Jenny and Josh...I hope you are able to get home soon, and start getting that water out of your house. I'll be thinking of you!
Vicky
Oh yeah, one quick story. My mom is making me post it, she thinks it is hilarious...
ReplyDeleteYesterday as the flood water got closer and closer to our house we finally decided, okay, we better pack of anything of meaning to us since we weren't sure how high the water was gonna get. And then move to higher ground.
It is weird, the things you pack when you think you may never see your house/belongings again...
We packed a bunch of clothes, toiletries, my grandma's ring and watch, a couple of my prize paintings, Josh's autograph binders, our cats, cat food, litter box, wedding album, box of photos, Memorabilia of our daughter, two autographed packer helmets, pillows, blankets...
...
GARFIELD SLIPPERS, DVD OF JOHN MICHAEL BOLGER IN COLUMBUS, AND THE AUTOGRAPHED PICTURE OF LEFT HAND LOUIE!!!!
Yes, out of all the things in my house that I could have saved I had to have my slippers, JMB DVD, and Left Hand Louie's autographed picture! LOL.
My mom thought that was hilarious!
LOVE it Jenny! ;)
ReplyDeleteGARFIELD SLIPPERS, DVD OF JOHN MICHAEL BOLGER IN COLUMBUS, AND THE AUTOGRAPHED PICTURE OF LEFT HAND LOUIE!!!!
ReplyDeletethese are very important items!
Good Night all! be safe! If I can help, let me know.
ReplyDeleteG'nite basement man!
ReplyDeleteJenny- That's so funny....but they are important!
ReplyDeleteI put some pictures up on my blog. When we were walking around today with my neighbors, we decided to take a few photos of the fox river. It reached its capacity about 10pm last night...now you don't know where the river ends, and the streets begin.
http://pickvick.blogspot.com
Vicky
Hi all..... glad to hear everyone is safe.... so sorry to hear about those who are flooded.
ReplyDeleteJenny... loved the story. Too cute!
Just a quick question..... was there any kind of warning about the amount or rain that was coming?
Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers....
Thanks Mary!
ReplyDeleteIt is raining cats and dogs!! The fox river overflowed so badly, that there are now SNAKES everywhere....it is soooooo grrooooosssssss!
My basement is getting better, but with all the rain...who knows what I will find when I wake up. :(
Vicky
I really hope the best for everyone down there.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are with everyone. Yesterday we didn't really have any rain here; just enough to wet the pavement, and about 12-15 miles south of me there was rain and all that fun stuff, also about 35-45 miles east of me they said they had winds about 50 miles per hour.
I'm heading to Door County for the day tomorrow. I really hope that all this rain won't cause problems there.
I will let everyone on the bus tomorrow know how bad it is down there and they will keep everyone in their thoughs and prayers too.
Just checking in, we are at a friend's house in Deerfield. Julia has been awesome, but I am tired. Jenny, I hear you about the funny things you grab when you are running out of your house. The first thing I took was the envelope of letters and photographs from Julia's foster family in China, as well as all her adoption paperwork, our passports, and the photo albums from our China trip. Those things are priceless and the only tangible "things" I would truly mourn the loss of. The worst part is that we decided to leave our kitties. They will be fine on the second floor, so I am not worried about them drowning, but I am upset to miss time with my Monty... most of you know he has lymphoma. He ate well before we left, but in the end we decided it would stress him out infinitely more if we took him with us. So, lots of food, water and two clean litterboxes and they'll be happy as ever. Still, it kills me to leave them behind.
ReplyDeleteBack to Julia, I am amazed at her matter-of-fact attitude about it. Granted, we have stayed very calm in her presence about things, but she is doing great. She was on the phone with my mom tonight explaining that "we can't stay in our house right now because there is too much water. But it's ok, we'll be back soon and I can sleep in my bed again. Mommy & Daddy will always keep me safe."
Sigh. That's right, baby. I heart my girl.
I hope everything goes ok for you Michelle! Sounds like you guys are having a hard time in COlumbus!
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering....on a different note.....if it was true about PE filming in Milwaukee on Wednesday? I have to go to Ohare airport in the afternoon, but when I get back I was going to head down to take some pics for you guys :) (If it's true)
vicky
Yup I have it turned on so people don't leave bad messages on my blog.
ReplyDeleteChannel 3 or 5 are both saying we've only gotten about 4 inches of rain. I think their rainfall totals aren't right. What you have stated seems more accurate to me.
How are the teachers suppose to get to work tomorrow in Columbus?? You can't even get to that side of town.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you live Who's? Which street?
ReplyDeleteSo during this whole flooding thing, I was never really nervous. Even after driving our car through water that should not be drivin through, after being stranded at a house because the jeep that tried to get us home couldn't make it down our street (we live on River rd...), and after walking in water up to my chest to try to see if we could try to walk through the golf course with out eight month old to get home, and then finally getting a ride from a very genorous man going down to street to rescue his aunt and uncle... I was never nervous. Now though, I'm nervous. I just woke up with my baby and water is up to where my husband and I never thought it would reach, and when I look at my baby formula, I don't know if it will last a couple days. Being on river rd. we are literally blocked off in both directions. The crawfish has now become one with the golf course and if there was an emergency, there is now way any help could reach us. What about the water???? Safe to drink?? Should I be using it for my baby's bottles??? It's like a bad nightmare that won't end.
ReplyDelete-T-
Capt. Anne,
ReplyDeletecorner of Pkvw & Gnvw. Odd (seems right) side.
-T-
ReplyDeleteIf you need to get out can you call? Is the phone still working? Water may not be safe, for you or your kido. Even if cars & trucks aren't an option...boats are and I would use one if I were you. If you call but need help, use this blog. There seems to be someone here most of the time. Stay Safe.
John
fanfromwi - we're heading to Door Friday for our every year in Door vacation. Where you headed!!
ReplyDeleteAs for were we warned.
Only of many tornadoes and severe weather.
The set up on Friday was amazing and I guarantee most weather geeks were pretty excited over the upcoming events. It really was setting up as the perfect storm.
However - news people have to play down the extremes because of the public not trusting them.
If the news says we will get 8 inches of rain and we don't they are laughed at. I have seen this happen MANY times.
Last winter any real weather geek KNEW we were going to get at least 15 inches of snow but the news could only forecasts 6-8 inches because people would not believe 15.
Rod said:
ReplyDeleteThat last stome was only about 1.5 inches - phttt!
YOU CAN DO BETTER THEN THAT!!! BRING IT ON!!
Be careful what you ask for!!!! LOL
Jenny, your "saved" items may seem a bit funny; but they're important to you so I'm glad they're safe! For two summers I carried every one of my scrapbooks (probably 25 of them) down to the basement every time we had a tornado warning. I finally realized that I have copies of most of the pages at my daughters' homes (I always make duplicate pages for them) so I stopped doing that and now only take my unscrapped photos! LOL I know it's not safe for me to be making several trips upstairs under those circumstances; but they're what I would miss the most!
Praying that all of this is over soon for all of you (I know even if it doesn't rain again there will be more run off) who are fighting the water!!
T--I'm worried about you. Please let us know how you are. If you need to leave but can't can you call 911 or the city-?? If you can't call, leave your address here and we will call for you.
ReplyDeleteI did notice that field across from us on Hwy 89 which is now the "lake" was much larger this morning. You must be on the other side of that.
Please stay safe!!!
Who's
ReplyDeleteYou live in the brown house on the corner? Next to Sally & Fritz?
Capt. Anne,
ReplyDeleteYup.
Who's
I'm also concerned for -T-, I'm at work and not able to watch this blog. Hope they can get help if they need it.
'water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink!' Flooding here in Indiana too. Not close to me but a lot of damage to the south. One town hit is Columbus, IN. Are the weather Gods targeting towns of Columbus?
ReplyDeleteNot sure how many gallons of water fell on IN but a large part had 11+ inches. It was just too much, too fast. Stay safe all...
Karen
