Once again we were in the cross hairs of a major storm. On Grinders Island we lost power for two hours but with so much lightning you could almost read a book.
Blake's Thunder Cap seemed to work OK from a electrical stand point as he did not feel the need to be grounded. He DID feel the need to hide in the basement but there was no hyperventilating as he normally does.
We only had about 1.37 inches of rain but the blast front was pretty darn impressive. Here are a couple pf photos I toot(k) looking south from the balcony!
Sadly you can not see the movement of these clouds as they looked like boiling water.

What you are now witnessing is a character flaw in good ol' Rod. Once something latched into my brain I get pretty obsessive about it. In the last 10ish years I have obsessed over wine appreciation, flower gardens, the stock market, Texas Hold'm (which earned me $40,000) and photography. I can always tell what my obsessions are by looking at my book case.
Well . . . . . I ordered another book on home brewing and will have three. OH OH!!!
For some reason I feel that if I'm going to get interested in something I must immerse myself into it, learn as much I possibly can. Talk to as many people and read everything I can get my hands on.
I was doing just this. I was reading an article about Diacetyl and how to get rid of it (more on that in my Homebrew blog (used to be my poker blog)). The writer mentioned Murphy's Law "If anything can go wrong, it will."
Here is where that "law" came about!
Captain Murphy was part of an engineering team out at Edward's Air Force Base in California. Their team was investigating the effects of high gravity de-accelerations on jet pilots back in the 1950's. One of their tests involved strapping a test pilot into a rocket chair equipped with strain gages and other sensors to help them quantify the effects of high G stopping. The responsibility for the placement of the various sensors was Capt. Murphy's. Well, the test was run (subjecting the pilot to something like 100 G's of deceleration) and he got pretty banged up.
Only after it was over did the team realize that of all the possible combinations of placing those sensors, Murphy had done it in the one configuration that resulted in useless data. They would have to run the test again. Upon realizing this, Murphy stated, "If there are two or more ways of doing something, and one of them can result in catastrophe, someone will do it that way." Upon hearing this the team leader said, "That's Murphy's Law." The next day at the test de-briefing the team leader shortened it to the now famous, "If anything can go wrong, it will."
Murphy still likes his version better.
I'm thinking of creating a small Brew club - seems to be a lot of brewers around. Maybe a meeting once every couple months - have people bring whatever they brewed - I wonder if the Kurth would be open to that kind of meeting!

I actually went out and registered our UFO report to the National UFO Reporting Center. I feel there has to be a logical explanation but neither DJ nor I can think of one.
Of course my report is pretty boring compared to on in Port Jefferson NY.
"Glowing orange objects, which you could see were round disk/sphere in shape when glow dimmed completely."
This one from Oxnard CA was close and only a few hours before we saw ours
"My wife and I and friend had just finished watching fireworks on the fourth of July. We were on bicycles. After the fireworks had completed we then rode approximately 200 yards or so to the beach, my wife and friend was in conversation and I was just looking up at the stars. Then I noticed something that really caught my attention. I saw a star wobble back and forth; I then pointed this out to my wife and friend. My wife noticed that there were two stars moving the same way. One was dimmer than the other. I kept me eyes on the brightest one. It was easier to see. It was really strange. They both looked like stars in the sky. There was no strange shape to them at all, they just looked like stars. They both zigged zagged back and forth a few times and then I didn’t see them anymore. We witnessed this for about 2 to 3 minutes it seems. Have there been any other reports of this event at all? I have always heard of things like this happening, but this is the first time that I have ever witnessed anything like this before."
WE'RE NOT ALONE!!!!
Have a great day!
Rod
I posted some cloud shots as well...and then a few of the yummy dessert we made last night since we had power...

Rod,
The Wine and Hop Shop in Madison does a Stout Competition every year..My husband and his friend took third place in their category...they all get together at the Italian Workman's Club downtown and taste test and talk etc...it was fun...done in March with Irish music and food..
You might check in and see if they have other tasting parties...
Tracy
OMG! Rod, the pics are awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tracy - I'm sort of looking around.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I recognize those clouds!!
yeah...you have a "better backyard" to accent your clouds...:) but those clouds...wow...
ReplyDeleteHey Rod, left a comment 4 u on yesterday... no time to go get it!
ReplyDeleteWe got hit pretty good last night too, but no power loss! ;)
Them are scary cloud pics Rod! Cool looking, but scary!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the part: "I toot looking south from the balcony!" =0P (sorry, couldnt resist.... that struck me as VERY funny!)
Didnt know that about Murphy's Law.... that is an interesting story for sure.
I guess we are not alone, seems like a few people saw things in the sky that night....
Happy Tuesday!
"I toot looking south from the balcony!"
ReplyDeletehehe! Rod - you tooted while you were looking south?
Awesome! The clouds, the UFO's! Thanks for the Murphy's Law story. I always wondered.
ReplyDeleteSo a power outage is the reason why I was all along online last night. I thought I was getting ditched.
The tooting has me cracking up.
ReplyDeleteIt was way to windy to toot - must be a typo!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I supposed if you really did, the wind would carry it quite a ways.
ReplyDeletePretty cool pics. I love watching thunderstorms but can never get such a good view with all the buildings and trees around. Thanks for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteShakes - that was over Philly and nothing like what we saw.
ReplyDeleteCool though - thanks!
werent those clouds crazy yesterday!?
ReplyDeleteit was totally like watching a boiling pot of water..green water!
Great Blog as usual..
ReplyDeleteThose Pic's are awesome...scary but awesome..
Should be put in a frame and hung...
So now you know you and DJ are not going crazy.Others saw the light!
There is alot of tooting going today...heehee!
Tracy your pictures are awesome as well.........
Thanks for sharing!
found a little blurb about JD's phobias...pretty amusing!
ReplyDelete---Among the male celebrities who admit to having phobias is Johnny Depp, who says he is not only afraid of singing in public, but also of clowns.
``I was forced to overcome my singing fear because of the movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,'' he says. ``I warned director Tim Burton that I wasn't very confident of my singing abilities.
``I think I was probably more frightened than anyone. I've never tried karaoke. It scares the hell out of me. I've never been that drunk -- and I've been drunk.
``I also have had an acute fear of clowns -- a condition known as coulrophobia -- ever since I had nightmares of them as a kid. I used to see their faces leering at me.
``I guess I am afraid of them because it's impossible -- thanks to their painted-on smiles, to distinguish if they are happy or if they're about to bite your face off.''
I don't like clowns either :P
ReplyDeleteAmazing that he would make that movie if he was so afraid to sing in public.
ReplyDeleteI have head that he has a fear of clowns, but I also heard that he has a bunch of clown prints. Maybe he likes to face his fears head on.
I hate clowns too! Isn't the movie "It" about clowns?
ReplyDeleteI won't see it!!! Creepy!
He He! I was in and out so quick this morning I missed all the tooting!! too funny! LOL
ReplyDeleteclowns... creepy...
ReplyDeleteRod...maybe you have Asperger's too! I mean toot.
ReplyDeleteRod-I think your "weather bubble" (of protection) has burst??!!
ReplyDeleteUFO's- as the X files theme says "I want to believe"...but there is usually some good but maybe weird explanation....
We being movieholics saw 3 movies over the 4th.....
"Wanted"-good Matrix like great special effects and a good story
"Mongol"-excellent 1st movie of a trilogy by a Russian filmmaker-how a boy became Geneghis Khan-has been compared to Lawrence of Arabia for its scope and fabulous cinematography
"Hancock"-mediocre IMO love Will Smith the first half is good, then if falls apart (I blame the script, good premise, bad follow thru)
Once again, some fabulous pics, Rod! I still don't know where you find the time and energy for all of your interests. When do you find the time to work??? LOL
ReplyDeleteHere's a question for all of the photo people out there: what do you recommend in the line of a macro lens for a dslr? Or do you feel the macro setting on the camera is sufficient?
For the past 30 years I've been using a Canon AE1 with an 18-80 zoom and an 80-205 zoom, both macro lenses. I finally got the sense to fully convert to digital (I've been using a little Nikon point and shoot for the past two years) and purchased an Olympus E510. I used my macro alot for flowers, butterflies and the like. Now I'm debating if I need to look into a true macro lens for my new camera. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance.
Clowns are icky-Stephen King's "It!" Tim Curry was the ickiest!!! But Rodeo Clowns are amazing-just icky-looking.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe JD would have a phobia of singing in public-he was in a band-but maybe didn't sing? Watched Sweeney Todd again(he seems very comfortable-must be the actor in him)-still love it-Rjaye and I warned Terry(LHL) and Conner that we would be singing along-probably annoyed them, but it's hard not to sing along when you know all the lyrics!
We just saw "Wall-e"-Soooooo sweet!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate clowns.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone recommend a good hair stylist or salon in Columbus or even Sun Prairie?
ReplyDeleteKrisx is a hairdresser.
ReplyDeleted.j.- I have 2 my sister- Hair-by-jenny @ Studio 7 in Sun Prairie- I think a wash and style and cut run about $23.
ReplyDeleteIf you want an upscale salon(aveda) my s.i.l Amy works at MCV salon in Sun Prairie
They both are great I flip-flop between both--
good luck!!
Laura
Krisx and LHL are the best.
ReplyDeleteBecause of Kris, I have a new found love of Sweeney Todd!
Because of LHL, Josh and I finally figured out why we have a swamp in our yard!
Your the best! OoOoO Kris does hair too???
BTW Rod's neighbor is psychotic! She just totally cussed out Rod and DJ and threatened to live-trap Milo!!!!! WITCH!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think someone should go live trap HER!
ReplyDeletewhy?!?!
ReplyDelete"b" with an "itch"
lol!
jenny- know youve said before how youre related to rod, but i dont remember, and im not going to go rooting through the old posts to figure it out!
ReplyDeletesorry! lol
has fema/ any aid helped you yet?
Rod's my step-dad and DJ is my mom
ReplyDeleteWe got some money from FEMA, but not a whole lot considering all of our damage. We're still waiting for State Farm :P
ReplyDeleteok..step dad.. icouldnt remember if he was your step dad or if DJ was your step mom...
ReplyDeletewell at least you got some aid...
yeah state farm...
we dont like them too much either.
bad experience with a car accident.
then again i think all insurances are notorious for not wanting to pay out money....not like they dont have it!
are you back in your house?
Yeah, we were displaced for about 5 days and went another week without hot water. Now everything is pretty much back to normal, except our garage has mold everywhere inside and needs to be totally gutted. But we're waiting for our check from State Farm so we can get a dumpster and start ripping it all apart and put it back together again.
ReplyDeletegotcha... well hopefully that check comes soon!!
ReplyDeletei just saw that you commented on the picture of my little guy on my "blog" im not very good about keeping it updated...obviously... i still new to all of it, and dont really know how to set things up and make it look cool
but thanks for saying hes cute! :) his name is nathanael..nate for short..hes 22 months now.
just getting over hand foot and mouth...some kid gave it to him at church... arg! it was a miserable few days!
Well I hope he's doing well now :)
ReplyDeleteHey thanks Laura and Lefty! I'll check it out. Does Kris have a Salon or does she cut hair at her home? I'm just kind of looking around because I don't like to drive to Madison on my days off, if I can help it!
ReplyDeleteI agree Jenny--LHL and Kris are the best!!
Maegan, I'm glad your little one is doing better...poor guy!!
I'm sure everyone will hear about our so called "neighborly" conversation tomorrow. I hate being yelled at and lectured. *sigh* But unfortunately this behavior by her is nothing new. :(
Yeah, the neighbor tells them they are horrible irresponsible neighbors because Milo is an indoor/outdoor cat. Yet she's the one who lets her dog run all over the golf course and into other people's yards all the time. Then she threatens to live trap Milo! I would call the police and file a report on her. She's NUTS!
ReplyDeletelive trapping kitteh's!
ReplyDeleteI will send Evan after her on Friday night.
I'll have to dig up the old blog where DJ had her hair raised on her back and was hissing with claws out that the neighbor.
ReplyDeleteit was a thing of beauty - NOBODY threatens Milo with live trapping and gets to stay on our yard.
SOMEONE tonight was a little low on sugar!
I will need a photo reenactment of dj with the raised hairs and claws please.
ReplyDeleteI will not post this tomorrow but here is the original confrontation.
ReplyDeletehttp://tinyurl.com/5d5hqw
Mary, I am not following the LHOTP link...that could very well be the reason I hide under the bed when the clowns come around.
ReplyDeleteEvan keeps asking me what caused my fear, and there are so many possible answers, but just now LHOTP sent me into a flashback that might involve rocking in a corner and xanax. TIA!
Rod, you look so skeery tuff manly in front of your "mechanical whirring device"! I still want a picture of dj all mad kitteh like though.
ReplyDeletePlant that in your garden of awesome!
I had a huge fear of clowns for a long time..I still don't like them but it's not a phobia anymore...
ReplyDeleteWhen I was kid we would go the town parade where my grandmother lived...and they had these "black falcon" guys who wore red suits and painted their faces black...they rode in on the fire trucks and would jump off and kiss random people on the sidewalk leaving black lipstick on their faces...they scared the crap out me..i would hide under chairs run into stores you name it and clowns wear all that face make up too...the fear just transfered...it was awful...
Great pics Rod!
ReplyDeleteI have always been afraid of clowns. Their makeup and hair is scary. Pennywise the clown in the movie "It" was very creepy. Serial killer John Wayne Gacy used to dress up as a clown for children's birthday parties as Pogo the clown. My neighbor used to live down the block from him in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteI knew I was an Odd Ball!!!!
ReplyDeleteHeehhee!!!!!
But I guess this confirms it...
Seems I am the only one that likes Clowns!
They usually are Happy !!!!
And that is me.
Thanks for your beautiful picture......
