UFO's over Columbus - part 2

After consulting local experts there were no satellites over the area Saturday night. This means the only other explanation is aircraft. Landing lights were mentioned but the objects were coming towards us. Plus if the lights were turned off then would blink off - not fade away.

Another note, both objects were far enough away from each other so if the lights were fading because their angel to us was changing the front object would have been fading sooner, yet both were of the same intensity and fading at the same rate. Another thing I did not mention was that the lights faded AND decreased in size until they were "star-like" size and then vanished.

Being somewhat sane I was figuring the objects were satellites because I knew they were not aircraft. Once the bright lights were gone I looked for other lights and there was nothing.

I'm very perplexed. I'll be making some calls to Truax.

I have been watching the sky for 40 years and so far this is the one time I am stumped for an explanation.

I have to mention the Brewers.

Grinders Island Brewery

The brewery brewed up it's first batch of Bascom Brown Ale (BBA) yesterday making a total mess BUT - it all got cleaned up and I learned a few things to make it a neater operation in the future.

My only minor concern was a little scorching on the bottom of the brew pot which might add a little caramelization.

So for you guys interested in what it takes to brew beer here is a little info.

I started with steeping grains in the kettle. I'm still looking into the reason for steeping grains AND Malt Extract.

Steeping grains add color and a small amount of flavor - they are like icing on a cake - they add complexity that a liquid Malt (the real workhorse) does not have.

Malt is interesting. Malt for beer is actually barley that has been soaked to a point where they start to germinate and then germination is quickly halted. This malting creates sugars and soluble starches and other characteristics needed for yeast for brewing.

HOPS.

Hops are a flower which was introduced to brewing about 1000 years ago but have only been in common use for 200 years. The fact that hops are flowers tells us everything you need to know. They are delicate and impart the necessary bitterness required to balance the sweetness of the malt. They provide the spice flavor in beer and the aroma which prepares the taste buds via the nose.

Hops are added at different times to produce different results. Here you see bittering hops (left) and flavor hops.

These two were poured into the wort (pronounced wert) and boiled for 45 minutes. Bittering add's a small amount of bitter and flavor adds, well, flavor.

Here is what the wort looked like before it started to boil.

The wort is boil for 45 minutes and they more hops are added and boiled for 12 minutes, then yet more hops ins added for another three minutes.

Here is the wort as it boils.

When the wort is finished boiling you must cool it as fast as possible. The sooner you can pitch the yeast (insert beer yeast) the less change of any nasty invisible thingys can enter the brew.

Here is the finished brew in it's fermentation carboy. There is a blow off tube inserted when I have learned is not needed except for wheat beer. Sometimes the initial fermentation is so violent that it erupts a little for a few hours. Not so for BBA.

Now according to instructions I now wait for a few days and then rack into the secondary tank once the fermentation settles down - then bottle in 10 days (adding corn sugar at that time for a secondary fermentation). Then after 1 week it is OK to drink but will improve for the next three weeks.

Alcoholic content should be in the 5.5% range.

My vision is to crack open one bottle on the 26th and another one on August 2nd.

BUT - who will help me DRINK my beer!!

Rod

  1. Rod, that is sooo cool! I really never knew how to brew your own beer. Thanks for sharing that! I am curious to see how it all turns out.... and what it tastes like.... keep us posted.

How did the Caribbean chicken recipe turn out? Did you ever make it?

  2. OH sorry Minx - forgot to answer that.

it was good but I wish there was more of it. Both DJ and I both said I wish there was more for a side dish.

The marinade was good but it was a little light, tasted better as a side dish.

  6. ROD!!! you soooo remind me of my DAD! (I miss him...)

We (he) always had an experiment of one kind or another going on. To my knowledge he never brewed any beer, but the wine making was FUN! Especially when the cat fell into the vat! Mittens was purple for quite some time, and not at all embarrassed about it!!

get to the bottom of this UFO thing, 'kay? ;)

oh, I went to your poker blog, just out of curiosity... I didn't understand a word you said!

  10. Just a couple beer tidbits that may prove helpful:

-Stirring about every 5 minutes after adding the malt will keep it from settling on the bottom of the brew pot and burning.

-A wort chiller works great, and you can make one pretty easily.

-If you really get into brewing, I recommend looking into using soda kegs with CO2 instead of bottles with priming sugar, unless bottles are your preference of course. :)

    Happy brewing!

  15. Rod,

My husband has been making home brew for a couple of years now...he
puts the brew in party pigs...once it's ready for drinking...it seems to make it easier then either soda CO2 or bottling..he hates bottling as it's time consuming.

if you do a search for party pigs you will find more info...

  16. Interesting blog. I know people who brew beer, and it is usually really good. I don't like it too hoppy, though. I like Jenny's comment about the mad scientist.

Interesting about the UFO's. Who knows, maybe there are aliens and they were attracted to the fireworks. As you know, other people saw something in the sky that night, too. Or maybe they heard Johnny was in town and just got here a little too late.

Thanks everyone for the kind words yesterday. It was a really hard day. I got a little too attached to this one. I have had only had 3 wish kids so far, and the others were doing well when we parted. This one had to go to the hospital soon after I met him, and I visited him there. He had a caringbridge site, so I could follow his story, and he lived in the same city as I do, where his mother taught the kids of some of my friends.

He was also a truly amazing child. He had so much life inside of him. Maybe Osh was right. Anyway, thanks again.

  18. Lawgirl,
sorry I didn't get to you sooner. The article was beautiful and it must be a difficult time right now. Hugs to you! I remember you telling me about him and how you were trying to get the JD autograph to him. Amazing how someone so young can touch your life forever.

Great blog today Rod. Really cool beer pics! Never really saw it done at home. Had some brewery tours, but then you're just worrying about getting the sample! hee hee!

Hope everyone had a great 4th! (with or without aliens...! Love your idea, Tiff! Too late for JD!)

  21. How much a bottle is this beer going to cost?? I just saw a piece on TV Sunday that said there was a shortage of hops (along with a huge price increase) due to the farmers switching over to corn for ethanol (don't get me started on that crock of doody).

  22. "Not I,"said the cat.

    (In regards to beer)

It reminds me of the little red hen--"who will help me bake this bread?"

  23. I'm not a hop head either. Party Pigs - true - at some point I'll do something like that but it needs to be portable at first - giving beer away type thing.

suz - just let things play themselves out - nothing you can do.

Hops for a home brewer are OK because not many are used - still - some types are in short supply.

  25. my husband has what he calls the "pig pen" he has a select group of friends that pitch for ingredients and then receive a pig of brew...they enjoy it greatly....

It took a year or so of brewing before he ventured that far...but he loves doing 5 gallon batches every couple of weeks.

  41. Brewing beer looks alot more complicated than wine! Never knew you had to BOIL it !!

I think I'd rather look for a wine kit to make Calon-Segur! LOL...if anyone knows something even remotely close, please let me know!

  42. Wow! Awesome shot of the clouds coming in! I was sitting in the dark thinking about Blake with his lightning cape on. It made me chuckle. :)

Fantastic storm photo!! We were at Pizza Hut for grandson's birthday when the storm hit! The sky just kept getting darker and darker!! It rained so hard as we were going home that you couldn't see anything! Almost hit a tree branch in the road!
I heard that a tornado touched down somewhere; and there was no warning!
