Freakishly Blank

Public Enemies Photo blog

WOW - I had Home Brew Club last night and oddly my brain is freakishly blank. Wha dup!

My newest brew, which I consider one of my best, didn't have the response I was hoping for but I think peoples taste buds were getting tired after seven other styles. It was the first hoppy (only one actually) brew tasted and stood out I THOUGHT!!! Who cares - I love it. It's not a competition.

BTW - I have thought of a way for you to get an assorted case of beer from me (or six packs . . whatever). You know I can not sell it, I can only give it away. But we all know it costs money to give beer away, home brew is for personal consumption. So what you can do is buy the ingredients!! If interested - let me know. This paragraph will disappear in a matter of hours as the Fed close in on me.

Funny thing about my hoppy brews - every time someone tastes one they say "ooooo it tastes like Hopalicious " Well - yea - it has hops in it, totally different kind and flavore but it is hoppy for sure.

Speaking of Hopalicious - did you know Ale Aslyum calls it there PALE ALE??? They have a new IPA coming out - My god if Hopalicious is only a Pale Ale their IPA will be solid hops. OH - and their Grand Cru is just a wonderful beer. I have put a Grand Crew in my pipeline - I must try to make one. I never had a Grand Crew before. A Grand Crew is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale here is a description from Beer advocate.

Belgian Darks offer a massive range of characters. Colors play within the amber to light brown to deep garnet hues, with thick, rocky heads of great retention. Aromas can be anywhere from traces of yeast, spiced, malty, floral and even slightly intoxicating (that's for sure). Flavors from dry and spiced, to sweet and malty. Most have a low level of bitterness.

Geez - that is like saying we are going to get betwen 1 and 9 inches of snow. It can be dry or sweet. Nailed it!!
=============================

So the Trailer for PE will be attached to Watchman. DJ and I were planning on going to see it next Thursday but now I find out "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" will be out at the same time. What to do, what to so. I hear the opening scene you have our three heros ambushed by a group of squealing girls who surround their car and they are chased through the streets of some city.

AWESOME!!! It don't get no better den dat.

I wish Public Enemies was in 3D, or even 4D smellivision. Did we skip right over 2D? Wait - it was just explained to me 2D is height AND width, so 1D would not be a very good thing to watch. What would be better, height or width. Probebly does not matter. OK - it's the home brew taking hold now - sorry.

OK - putting it to bed.

On this day in history in 1827 a group of masked and costumed students dance through the streets of New Orleans making it the first Mardi Gras which translated is Fatty Tuesday. With that in mind I have decided to call my Scottish Heavy - Gros bâtard. (sorry balderdash, I can not name a beer Dirty Jock).

And of course "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRICLES?" happened today in 1960. Weird - I had always thought I was with a bunch of people watching that but I would have been way way young. Seriously . . . I've never realized this before now. WAIT - - - - - - - AHH HAAA the one I'm thinking about was in 1980! WHEW - MAN I was worried there for a second. I was in some very serious confusion.

I better stop right now!! I have important work to do on a 300 million dollar computer system.

Have a great weekend.
Rod

  6. Hi Rod, Callie from Rhode Island here. When you talk about Belgian ales it gives me fond memories of my trip last year to Belgium to visit my sister who moved there because of her husbands job. We drank a beer called Leffe which was great. Another beer was called Brugse Zot. We also went to Germany and had good beer there. In fact, I think the whole trip we had great beer and wine!! Drink up!

  12. Bob Link is a good guy...I (personally) don't think he has the personality to be mayor of Columbus. I don't agree with him on everything, but a little business sense in government might not be a bad thing...

  13. I agree 100% who's - what I worry about is business sense without a look forward.

If not I endorse my former SS teacher Mr. Kaland. I am hopeful that he has a strong appreciation for the hugely important historic assets of our community. Those structures and places will prove to be increasingly important as our nation changes. Columbus does not need to be another pole shed with a stucco facade business district.

I don't know Mr. Link well enough to say that for him. Maybe he can convince me otherwise.

Hey who's. I'll buy the rum, you need to spill your guts about the poop nickname.

  25. Letter to the editor I'm not going to send

After two years of growth (statistics prove this) Columbus has taken one giant step backwards. The hypocritical Truth In Politics website (which disappeared as soon as their candidate won) and it’s backward thinking group will soon take over Columbus government and create strip malls at the expense the historical downtown district. If their new Mayor (who has basically already won) had his way Public Enemies would never had come to Columbus and the world would never even consider visiting our beautiful town.

From everything I have read and heard the new candidates are more worried about leaf pick-up and pot holes then actually having a vision of what Columbus should look like 20 years from now. From what I gather they believe Columbus, in 20 years should look exactly like it does today, but with no pot holes.

I will not say I agreed with our current Mayor on everything but at least she had a forward looking vision which is why many people new to the city moved here. Now I fear the dark, backward looking faction that wants everything to stay the same will be in power, for two years.

  27. Rod,

The good news. I think the world is changing a whole lot faster than the old guard can comprehend. Admittedly faster than any of us can comprehend. The past is fleeting and the new world is screaming in like it or not. People that open their minds to a new way of thought are the future. That being said the true wisdom of our early settlers to embrace beauty and good design has stood the test of time. Before our eyes the "economic progress" of the last 15 - 20 years is being erased. I feel pretty strongly that much of the garbage development and architectural crap that now litters the American countryside serving no real purpose for the future will be the next shoe to drop. It will unfortunately be a slow and ugly decay but none the less it was built on a false economy with no sustainability. Downtown Columbus has stood the test of time. Great architecture and beautiful communities with strong culture always do. Our downtown still wears more battle scars than I would like to see but thanks to the wisdom of a dear friend it is safe for future generations. We just need to find a better way to take care of it going forward. I challenge you to find me one Columbus building that has been built in the last 20 years that will stir the interest of anyone 20 years from now. Fact of the matter is what will inspire people 20 years from now will still be the best buildings ever built in the City of Columbus. The original historic downtown buildings.

There is no real power to build and grow a community in City Hall. The people that continue to walk through those doors to butt heads are slaves to the causes they are so enraged about. I truly wonder if the people that spend week after week after week trying to manipulate their way into the prestigious halls of Columbus City government every really drive outside the city limits? Ever really see what is going on in the world around them. If they realize how Columbus will be impacted by outside influence like it or not? Never really seeing the bigger picture of how Columbus fits into the grander scheme of things. I have nothing against any of these folks personally but I am afraid they are disconnected from our true future. City Hall politicians need us a way worse then we need them. If all the creative minds in Columbus decided to pick up and leave what would the "chosen ones" have left for the future? Really. Not much. I can't imagine how even they can see a future here. Continuing to grasp onto the typical mistakes of the last 20 years? Where is the new thought? Creative energy? Passion? Innovation?

Eating up precious farm land to build tin shacks for the sale of consumer trinkets is not the future. Preserving the past in a community like Columbus has so much more to do with cultivating the future than battling the status quo. The good news is the status quo is out of gas and they really don't even know it. There truly is no gas to move the model of the last 20 years forward. Change is inevitable and communities that grasp this will flourish. So City Hall is still stuck in reverse. Big deal. The real community finds a way to move on. President Obama won the election because he had the right message at the right time and MOST IMPORTANTLY he changed the rules of the game and he owns the rules. His opposition is still scrambling to figure out the rules.

I will not be writing you in for Mayor. There is no real power in City Hall. Change the rules my good friend.

    Todd

  28. Todd 1st of all - step away from the coffee. LOL

2nd of all - thank you for NOT writing me in for Mayor.

3rd of all - I agree. Colulumbus is growing and I truly believe it is only a matter of time before the old guard find themselves alone. Our task is to defend what we have until the town grows.

Kim mentioned you mentioned Stoughton and their historic district. Remember - they are almost 3 times the size of Columbus.

If the Pioneer would have come out I would have had some great statistics on just how good columbus is doing compared to 36 other towns of "like" size in WI. You would be amazed how well off we are. Cost of living is lower, awesome on crime, one of the TOP towns from population growth.

I feel we just need to keep the buzz going, it'll happen.

With that said - TruthinesseInColumbusPolitics will soon have it's own domain.

  29. So what you are saying is size really does matter?

    That's a heartbreaker.

  30. Lots of good discussion going on here! I just got back from DC... awesome... inspirational. Didn't get to meet the Obamas but did talk to Kohl, Fiengold and Baldwin. We need to continue to talk and think about important topics... OK, Rod, you're topics aren't all important, but the discussions are wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Rod- send the letter!

Todd- send your post in a letter!

It'd be a shame-- really-- if more local people didn't get to read all that. Not to diminish the blog hits hereabouts, but some of those folks are in Brisbane.

Both of you are exactly the kind of intelligent, well-reasoned individuals who *should* speak out, and who will be listened to because you do have public reputations to stand upon.

That's where the hope of change will come from.

Preaching to the choir here, though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. M - yea - that is a problem. We need to get all of the Brisbane people tpo move to Columbus.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks M but I think half this town is ready to buy me a one way train ticket. Putting that in the paper would convince the other half to chip in...

Before I get too much coffee in my system I guess what I was getting at yesterday in my rant was to think creatively about how to make change happen here. I'm not convinced battling City Hall is the answer. Actually getting involved in Columbus politics is one sure way to suck the life out of you. Develop a well thought out plan of action rather than just a reaction to the opposition. Cultivate the growing base of individuals that are interested in these issues. In reality City Hall can help the downtown but they will not make or break it. People build communities - not governments.

Stoughton may be 3 times the size of Columbus but it's obvious that a larger percentage of people in that town appreciate their historic downtown. They are embarking on fundraising for a $500K marketing campaign to promote their historic community. Half a million bucks in promotion of their historic downtown. Half a million bucks! Maybe it's not be a lovefest but they do have enough unity to get things done. It would appear that is not the case in Columbus so on to plan B.

  34. I just watched a video that Todd forced me to watch and it is very entertaining and enlightening.

It's 19 minutes which is why the City Counsel will not watch it - their attention span is only 5 minutes.

I'm an avid player of SIM City and and it would be death to place a strip mall basically outside the city limits, drawing people AWAY from the center of town. Who's idea was that??

Watch this video - it's entertaining

  36. While this is all good discussion, I fear that the Old Guard cannot comprehend WTH you are saying.

"They" just are not getting it.

Those who do "get it" need to rally together, find our charismatic leader, set our sights and charge on.

Who is ready to have death threats agains them? Who is ready to sacrifice positive attitude and a penchant for good intentions if you fly the flag in the wrong order?

It's a harsh, harsh, world. The newbies to this town have to break the chainmail of the old guard, or deal with them by attrition.

The latest news on the auditorium is proof of a lack of vision. Our viability as an intact piece-of-the-past rests not only on maintaining our historical architecture, but by capitalizing on it!

Geez, now I'm all worked up.
