I would be remiss if I did not start off with the Hurricane watch. Ike!!
Some interesting things are happening. It's zooming over Cuba and most models had it weakening more then it really is. The big worry is that once Ike has left Cuba the waters of the Gulf are very very conducive to major strengthening. There will be very little shear.
You might have heard the word shear a lot lately and all it means is the top of the Hurricane will not be blown off my strong winds. A hurricane is like a spinning top. If you blow on the top while it is spinning it is like shear, it will wobble and fall over faster. No shear and the top will spin with ease and get more stable and stronger.
Cuba is really getting crushed with 20 inches of rain, 160 mph winds and 50 foot waves crashing the beaches.
This is going to be another big one hitting the States.

Oddly the hurricanes are effecting movies.
The weekend after labor day is always one of the slowest weekends of the summer for movies. College students are back in school, football has started, major tropical storms are hitting the east coast and another big one is coming at Texas, and toss in politics, movie going is not a high priority.
This weekend Bangkok Dangerous was the big event and I thought Nick Cage was finally going to win his Oscar he deserves but the movie only took in 7.4 million on it's opening weekend . . .still FIRST PLACE!!!!
Then there is Universal (the guys that destroy stop lights). Do you think that Public Enemies will be able to top their biggest movie this year? Mama Mia?
Don't laugh. Mama Mia has grossed $416 million world wide - WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!!
And speaking of Public Enemies.
I have talked to a few store owners and people visiting Columbus are still talking about Public Enemies. "This is where that movie was filmed" type conversations. We gotta get the train station thing up an running!! (clearing my throat).
I have heard some good rumors about sequels. Have any of you heard anything????
=======================
Columbus news. There are a number of new businesses coming to town according to our Mayor. I asked what they were and I hope I will find out later today. Some are still secret but I have heard more rumors that one is a company that will store foreign nuclear power-plant waste in the quarry across from us. THAT WOULD BE SWEET!!!
A plutonium and uranium dump. BUT, Columbus would be $4 BILLION better off!! We could tear down all those old buildings and put up new steel and glass ones!!!!
I hope Nancy Osterhaus will let me know if there is a thumbs up or thumbs down on this one.

FIELD TRIP IN THE WORKS.
How about a PEC field trip to a llama farm tour!! Yea - my people are IN CONTACT with other people and they are in negotioans (after a few . . . incidnets, at the Sassy Cow other places are now taking a much closer look into the PEC crowd and security).

BEER
Grinders Island Brewery - Lazy Man's Porter (although it is not really a Porter) is DRINKABLE!!!
That's right. Saturday I popped open a bottle of LMP and poured a glass for my buddy Elweed and he said "This is good". I gave a littel to DJ and her comment was "It tastes like beer".
YEA BABY
That might become it's tag line.
So I'm thinking of bringing a couple 6-packs to the Kurth (I have their permission) some night.
The #3 brew (Columbus Carriage Classic Ale) is coming along nicely and yesterday doing the extemely boring (I wish I could have THOSE 3 hours back) NY Jet Football game I botteled a Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown Ale.
I still have a Double Chocolate Stout aging and a Fat Tire Ale in the carboys!
I have ordered the ingredients for a British MILD (Black Cat Real Lancashire Ale). I bet no one has ever had a British MILD. A MILD is what many pubs in England USED to serve. They are very tasty but have less alcohole then most American beers. Think, near beer but with flavoure (notice the spelling of flavor, a British slant). Typically the time from pitching the yeast to drinking is 10 days (longer for home brewers).

Football.
I'm in 24 place in the money winners out of 190 in one pool so far with Green Bay and Denver to go. I went 9-4 against the spread.

FLOWERS!!! Anyone want a vibrant Fennel plant?? It's taking over my garden. I'm going to dig it up at some point and plant it across the fairway if no one wants it.
We had hummingbirds zooming over the red flowers next to it Saturday. They are annuals and I don't know what they are but I purchased three and THEY took off!! I've never had annuals - I didn't know they spread so much!! Those are three 4 inch plants next to the fennel.
And the Sweet Autumn Clematis grew 11 feet in it's first year. Not to bad for 1 year. This is suppose to grow up to 25 feet a year and have the sweetest aroma and millions of tiny white flowers once it get's established.!
OH - Care Free Roses MY BUTT!!
Anyone know what is going on here? We have never had good luck with these. I sprayed them with some Rose bug killer when I saw some sort of many legged critter eating them. But I don't see them now. Grasshoppers????

IT TASTE'S LIKE BEER!!!
That might become it's tag line.
Anyway - I can not tell if it is to light tasting or am I used to drinking stronger beers ???? It's SUPPOSE to be a porter but I think I had too much water in the recipe so it's a little diluted. Still.

Grinder -
ReplyDeleteI'm curious where your meteorological backround came from. Is there a story there too?
With all this learnin' we're getting I'm getting worried there'll be a test some day.
Hey Rod - If you don't get an answer on the Roses, call Alice S. (Met her at the HLPC meeting). Her entire backyard is roses.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear there are some new businesses coming in. We need some good news!
Dear mister weather expert. Is there any chance that the front heading south now will steer Ike a little further east than currently anticipated?
ReplyDelete"It tastes like beer."
ReplyDeleteBest tag line ever for a beer!! :D
Actually - I wanted to be a pilot when I was younger but then was told I actually needed better eyesight.
ReplyDeleteSo then I wanted to be a weatherman but was told I needed TWO BS degree's. Well - knowing my study habits I knew THAT would never happen.
as for IKE.
There is suppose to be a weakening of a high pressure ridge over the east coast which will make Ike slow and move more NW for a day (path of least resistance).
However - that will be replaced and a strong ridge from the north will push Ike back into a more Westerly direction.
I'm sure you have no shortage of BS.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Rod doesn't need a degree, he has a ton of BS to make up for it.
ReplyDeleteAren't you supposed to eat fennel?
ReplyDeleteWell - the caterpillars were suppose to eat it and when I purchased the 3 inch plant I thought it would be gone in a few weeks.
ReplyDeleteLittle did I know it would COME ALIVE and eat my garden!
I love the BS. And learning about how these storms work, too.
ReplyDeleteI approve of the Tastes Like Beer motto - just in case you were wondering ;)
Hey Rod.... long time....
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the beer is doing well!
As far as your roses go... looks like black spot to me... a type of fungus. Its easy to treat, but sometimes difficult to get rid of. I always remove ALL the leaves that have the spots and then treat the rest of the plant. It spreads quickly to other roses nearby as well. It does appear that you have little circles chewed from the leaves as well... that could be a number of little critters. Some additional bug spray might help with that. Good luck!

hope this helps you....
Hey Rod,
ReplyDeleteOne of my coworkers was saying today that she got to have dinner with Johnny Depp and his crew in Columbus and had some photos with Johnny. I should send you her email to see if she would like to share her exciting story on the blog!! Let me know if you want me to get you in touch with her.
"I have heard some good rumors about sequels. Have any of you heard anything????
ReplyDeleteHaving a sequel to PE is like a sequel to Titanic.
On a serious note.
MM has a script out to different studios in which Leonardo DeCraprio (lol) will star in a 1930's murder/drama
My lips have to be sealed on this.
Nic Cage is finally going to get the Oscar he deserves?
ReplyDeleteAre you saying he didn't deserve the one he got for Leaving Las Vegas? Oh that's mean, Rod!
Mamma Mia is doing business like no other film this year because it's drawing in people who don't normally go to the cinema, and they are going multiple times. Go see it Rod - there's a sing-a-long version in case you forget the words! All together now "Money, money money, must be funny, in a rich man's world!"
"It tastes like beer"; BEST tag line EVER!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI think Mama Mia is doing so well because people still enjoy musicals and it's been SO LONG since one has been done. Great info on the weather as usual.
I don't do too well with roses either. Mine get black spot too. I'm going to check out the link Minxie posted for next year.
Are you ready for some football?!?!
ReplyDeleteGo Pack!
We're all hunkered down at Rod's watching the Packers. Go Pack! We need to have a Packer Party sometime!
ReplyDeleteI have decided that Rod is just an older Evan.
ReplyDelete"IT TASTES LIKE BEER!"
ReplyDeleteyou can't beat that ;)
If you don't get a taker on the fennel Rod, I'd like to try to do something with it. (is it fragrant at all?)
Shakes - Rod says yes it has fragrance.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Osh - I heard about the political question Evan asked you about McCain and Palin. That is hilarious! Evan should be on Letterman
Does it have a pleasant sort of fragrance, one that wouldn't kill you if it spent the winter in your living room?? : )
ReplyDeleteHe says it has a very nice fragrance and the fennel is 5ft tall.
ReplyDeleteI killed my big palm in my living room this spring while I was pre occupied with PE!
ReplyDeleteI've also wanted to experiment with fennel in cooking, but never spend the money on it in case I hate it (i don't care for anise) but have heard it can be awesome in some dishes...
5 feet is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI'll trow out the palm roots and put the pot in my truck! ;)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can make it into a Christmas Fennel Tree. Put some ornaments and lights on it. Then when you get hungry you can chomp off a branch!
ReplyDeleteAttention all Blog Readers... Important Announcement... There will be no blog on Tuesday, September 9th because Rod has to go to school. (Training for work) Boo Hoo :(
ReplyDeleteWhat a slacker!
ReplyDeleteLight-weight!
ReplyDeleteGood idea Jenny!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to put ornametns on my palm before I killed it!!! ;)
I'm so excited! I was wondering jsut how I was gonna fill that BIG HOLE in my living room!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for you!
ReplyDeleteI will dig up Mr. Fennel and bring it whenever.
ReplyDeleteI'm designing labels for my beer but I spelled a word wrong - now I can't fix it until Wednesday because the fonts I want are only at work AND I can not figure out how to put new ones in VISTA.
I can download free ones but I can't see how to install them.
grrrr
GO PACK!!!! WHOO HOO- Ching ching - if Denver WINS I come in 1st place in a pool AGAIN ching ching!
Rod should have guest bloggers
ReplyDeleteand I think wrongly spelled words would be part of the charm and your trademark on your labels Rod!
I'm blissfully Vista-dumb! ;)
ReplyDeleteNo blog today.........
